Nice combine! Nice that you got one with the rear wheel assist. I worked for a Deere dealer as a service tech and a service manager from the late 70's to the mid 2000's. The 8820 was one of the best combines Deere built. Better combine than the 9000 series. Deere bragged about the capacity of the 9500 and 9600's. Yeah, they could take crop in and thrash it, but they couldn't hold it. If you weren't careful, you could run a lot of grain out the back end real fast. And if you went through them like you should have every winter and replaced everything that was worn, the maintenance cost per hour of operation was way higher than your 8820. I don't know if I would spend the money for the ceramic finish, but I would give her a good polish job so she shines real nice. Add some LED lights. Make sure you have the updated blades in the cleaning fan. Add a few rows of filler plates to the front of the concave if it doesn't already have them. Make sure the rear of the concave is adjusted up properly, and is leveled. I would change the grease in the final drives and check the bearings in the final drives. Check the backlash on the bevel gears that drive the shoe supply augers. Make sure the beater grate is in the correct position for the crop you are harvesting. Make sure your sheaves are properly aligned for the variable speed cylinder drive. Smart move for a young guy like you to buy that combine instead of spending hundreds of thousands on a new one. It's not as fancy as those new ones, and it doesn't have all the bells and whistles the new ones do, but guess what? It's going to harvest your crop just as well as a new one. It may take you a day or two longer, but you will have this one paid for and be putting money in the bank way before you would with a newer combine. They are not that hard to work on, and it sounds like your buddy Doc will be a big help to you. Good luck with your 8820! I miss the days when I worked on them.

I don’t recall us ever having any real major issue outside of normal wear and tear. we sold it to upgrade to a 9510. Those 6620,7720,8820s are absolutely solid machines and I stop every time I see one still in action. Those were the golden years especially with the sound guard John Deere’s as well. I really appreciate the old green and yellow iron! I grew up riding in an 8820 Titan II combine for my entire youth it eventually got sold and years later my neighbor a farmer who i have worked with for years, running his 8820 Titan II told me that that was the same combine I grew up in all those years ago, he bought it from the farmer who rented my grandparents land after my grandpa passed away from cancer. The neighbor is the one that now rents a portion of our land as I slowly take more of it over as i learn and grow as a farmer but it still boggles my mind that that combine has never really left our farm and has harvested so many crops off these fields and now im having the amazing opportunity as he is wanting to upgrade to purchase it back and bring it back home where it belongs. Its an amazing story which i just had to share when i saw your video show up and its cool how it really has come full circle and all the memories i have in that machine will continue as we keep the old iron running!

I would check the rear of the conveyor augers for wear. The augers are made of pipe with flighting welded on. In the back they use an oil impregnated wood block, and eventually they wear the pipe out. I flipped the wood blocks to the front of the mounting bracket, and then cut a couple inches off the flighting for clearance. Didn't even have to remove the augers. Also, check the front of those augers. The bevel gears under the feederhouse just float on the shaft but are keyed to it. The keyways wear in the shaft until they don't have the traction to turn the augers.

I think the rotor design was invented by IH but new holland was one of the first to use the rotor in their 1975 twin rotor combine. IH's axial flow was released in 1977 with the 1400 series. (IH was using prototypes of the axial flow combines for up to 2 decades before their combine was released.)

In the 90's I helped a neighbor of mine, he had a farrow to finnish operation and farmed ground around the neighborhood, but his boys were only in grade school. He had a 6600 and a 4 row head that did a great job, but was starting to show some age. He traded the 6600 on a 7720 Turbo. It was like going from working ground with draft horses to a 4320. The 4 row head on it couldn't keep up, I swear I was combining at 10 MPH sometimes. LOL. Got a 6 row head and it still ate corn like a pig. Treat that 8820 right, most guys my age (55) and older say it was the best series of combines Deere made. Great job and good luck farming.

I had a 79 8820 and ran it 9 years. Great combine. It would run with 9600 in corn with 8 row head. Had a 20ft head with tiger jaw quick cut . 5 mph as long as beans were standing. Wish I had one of those set-ups now. So much easier to open field up with smaller head. We never carted the head just drove to the field and started cutting.

I grew up driving a 6600, 6620, 7720 and an 8820. I still have a 1987 8820 Titan II. So I know a little bit about these machines. The tail board and fins on the chopper on your combine have been replaced with the larger one like mine to help spread the material better. As for the controls inside, the black lever next to the throttle is the cylinder speed. The big round one in front of those levers is for reel speed on the bean head. Also, the lever on the left side of the steering column is used on the corn head to speed up or slow down the head speed. You may want to check and see if your cylinder has been upgraded to the 2 speed cylinder. I think they added that around 1983-84. Try to keep it inside a shed and not leave it out. Water is not your friend on the bearings, left over grain in the grain tank, trash build up inside the walls of the rear hood, shoe auger pan, etc. It will rust out in places where water is able to pool up or absorb into the material built up inside. Parts are getting harder to find especially shields. Take precaution when you take off shields and don't put them where they can be run over or lost. Looks like the shield over the upright auger chain is gone. Be careful you don't have clothing or hands close to this when running if shield is missing. You should be able to find one in a salvage yard, but most are rusted out at the bottom from trash build up and getting wet over the years. Be sure after harvest that you blow it off thoroughly before washing it. Stuff will build up in places that you wouldn't think about, such as between the cab and the grain tank and under and behind the motor. Always keep the motor blown off, keep all material away from engine that could start a fire. I think that you should polish it up and ceramic coat it to preserve the paint.You have a nice 45 year old machine. If you have any questions, I'll try to answer what I can. Its nice to see the younger generation be interested in older equipment.

Make sure the pan under the set of small augers is not wore thin, its a mongrol to replace. If the small augers have not been replaced and are worn it will crack grain, because it won't pull the grain away from the concave fast enough. There is a grease cert on the live shaft under the seat/seat pan that should get greased once a season, its a bear to get to. Good luck on your adventure.

Now that's a combine! We're running 87 6620 Titan 2 sidehill which was a huge upgrade from the 6600. I love it, best sample every year at the co-op. Mine has 22 led lights total on it now and it shines damn near a 10 acre area under light which is nice! Also turned mine up to 7720 horsepower and I can run a 643 corn head in 225 bushel corn at 3mph but unloading on the go drops a guy to about 1-1.5mph but I also run a 920f and it's perfect for that combine in beans, keeps it full at slower ground speeds so you do a good job cutting. In a good day of beans I can knock out 55 acres with no issues. Corn is slower since drying is slow but when hauling to town 35-45 acres is a good number to pick a day. Like I always say simplicity has a quality all of its own!

What did you do to gain engine HP?
@kolewiebensohn
@kolewiebensohn Ай бұрын
@6thGenFarmer Well me and my local mechanic who worked at Deere when these 20 series were new was talking and we ended up giving the pump a crank, basically what a lot of guys did to tractors hence the reason I have a 4430 that dynos 170hp. Cause the 6620 engine is the same as the 7720 and has a couple differences from a 8820. They all are 6466Ts, but the 8820 was the special one that got a intercooler as the big difference. But yeah just tweeked the fuel pump screw. Basically my 6620 will run with my neighbors 7720 in corn until it's gets above 25 percent and 235 bushel to the acre, that's were the extra threshing capacity and larger clean grain system and grain tank augers come into play as my 6620 just can't keep up now but that extra horsepower does help out a lot in tough beans. In corn I can't get crazy since sidehill final drives were built to take a lot of abuse. These combines are a simple machine and some maintenance goes a long way, kinda funny my 6620 had a fire this fall during the last day of beans harvest and it's currently just about to go into the shop to get fixed up because it's just to nice to scrap since I've put about 15 grand into it in the past years. I do recommend a good was and buff and what I use is Malco Rejuvenator, it really brings faded paint back.

I’ll let you know there is a cross shaft behind the motor ujoint you need to grease once or twice a year you just adjust it at the shutoff loosen the screw and pull the cable out and retighten screw and then you have it adjusted you have to stand on your head almost to grease it that switch is your reel speed

I think it deserves to be polished. Definitely on the look for more videos. Cannot wait until harvest. Make sure you have some common belts on hand because most dealers don't stock parts for these anymore. Better then paying for next day freight or waiting a couple days for a stock order. Parts for these are also very cheap compared to deere's newer combines.

You don't need starting fluid, leave the key on for 15 seconds letting the electric fuel pump get the fuel up there to the injectors. 8820 was probably the best starting combine ever made. But of course I'm ever possible I will always plug in any equipment I plan on using on a cold morning unless it's out in the field That is 14 mi away from my homestead farmstead

Chaffer on top, sieve on the bottom. One of the big advantages of the 9000 series was the pre-cleaner,a sieve in front of the chaffer which put 1/3rd of the corn right into the grain tank

Wow - super cool and informative video. Congrats on the (new to you) classsic combine. I look forward to seeing you harvest with it next year. Also from a technical perspective, I think it is fantastic that you've clearly learned up on how the combine works. Getting under the 'hood' is critical to responsible ownership and operation.

Reel speed is your dial! Also there should be a dial down on the right hand side behind the tire that shows your cylinder clearance

I think it will look amazing cleaned and polished. Definitely it will make you feel better and remember, you’re going to be in there a lot. So, like your truck, make it nice for you. I also think that the engine is going to be much more easy to maintain. Congratulations on the purchase. Sometimes simple is better. BIG PLUS, you won’t need a computer to work on this machine and you will have right to repair for this.

I believe that dial you turned and thought it adjusted the cylinder speed is actually a hydraulic control to vary the reel speed. I think the cylinder speed had to be adjusted manually from outside near the belts. At least that's what I recall from our 6600. And that was a LONG time ago.

Should be a nice machine. Those Titan/Titan II combines were good machines. My only major complaint with them was the offset cab, but not all the manufacturers had centered cabs back then. I will disagree that the other manufacturers left the chat when the 8820 arrived though. The IH 1480, Gleaner L2 and N7, and New Holland TR95 were all heavy hitters as well and the White 9700 later too. All in good fun, any classic combine is cool to see in the field.

Howdy, I gotta agree with you, the 8820 was and is a legend combine, we never had one, we ran Massey Ferguson combines, but we had neighbors that did run the 8820, and still have a friend that runs one, Chris over on Duffy ag, runs a 8820 too, definitely a Cool combine, Stay safe, God Bless and Farm on my Friend

loved my 7720s when i started and still have them but love the 9500 i got now if your late into the fall and it gets cold have extra fuel filters because i had issues jelling up but for a startup machine you will be happy if your fields are flat why not get a 1243 or 1293 then you can grow into the head if you ever update later down the road plus it fits the planter. otherwise, a 643 with calmer rolls is awesome run that on the 9500 and love it
@dougadams2948
@dougadams2948 Ай бұрын
Only issue with a bigger head is the grain tank only holds so much. Better to plan how you are going to get the grain away from the combine efficiently. I had a 6620 and 6 row corn head as I used it moving to my 9500, but with the 6620 parked wagons in the middle of the field and dumped often.
@6thGenFarmer

@@6thGenFarmer that’s a fair point 6 row would be nice to much easier to get down the road then a 8 but I have narrow roads where I’m at at the end of the day you gotta do what’s best for your operation because what works for the farm next door might not work for you and vice versa but I still stick with get the calmer knife rolls when you can in my opinion
@scotyarnell1157
@scotyarnell1157 Ай бұрын
@@6thGenFarmer there were some mechanics/ farmers that made 8 row heads out of 6row heads. You might run into this when looking. Think positive about them because we had one when these heads were expensive used (unmodified) and it worked fine…. Saved some money too.
