2.2.2023 Mike ~ THANK YOU for this nice video . I like your '59 very much . In my October '58 (early '59 model year) bug I'm running 6 volt LED taillights and license plate lamp . I'm awaiting delivery of some LED headlight bulbs, I'm cautiously optimistic they'll be better than the original 7" #6006 seal beam bulbs . When running a fluted inner lamp you must not also run an outer fluted lens ~ your healights will be diffused all over the place, not safe at all . The 6 to 12 inverter circuit boards look interesting, a link to the Flea-Bay item number would be nice, I get millions of hits . 7 amperes should be plenty to run the tail and brake lights . I'm just now discovering you and am off to watch more of your videos . -Nate (retired VW Mechanic still daily driving 36HP)

I built a set of 6 volt HALOGEN lights for my '65 VW. They certainly were an improvement over the stock system. Eventually, I converted everything over to 12 volt, and that provided the best illumination of all.

I never had a 6V yet. Never a Fail my friend! Just a redo! Hey why don’t you give Good Old Mike a yell! Would enjoy seeing you on a podcast! Keep up the great work, and Merry Christmas!!

Why are you using fluted lenses over fluted sealed beams? Us spec cars have clear lenses as you rightly know. May I suggest to use a euro spec reflector if you like the look of the outer fluted lens and run 6v or 12v led headlights or ultra bright white light (Hella ones) halogens. I have done that on mine and pretty happy with the results. Happy Christmas and all the best. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

I was hoping they would fire up. I have a 65 beetle stock. I really dont want to convert it. It really works great but lights an wipers really suck

LEDs are very sensitive to voltage fluctuations, not like a typical incandescent bulb that retains heat in a filament. We all know that at idle our lights dim on a generator, LED will really amplify what is going on. You can fix that with an appropriate capacitor and a couple diodes to stop it from back-feeding the capacitor back into the system. But of course, if its a 12V bulb, then its just wrong to begin with and my suggested modifications matter not!

I have a toyota tacoma and a 70 bug. I've been rear ended twice in my tacoma and both time it pretty much just bent the bumper downward. It has made me terrified of being rear ended in my bug. I have a stock style reflector, a custom VW reflector and a little bicycle reflector in the middle on the bumper as well as two more little reflectors on the plate.

friday afternoon in my bug, precovid, hey, that guy is coming too fast, GD it...we're going to get hit as we are in a line of cars at a red light...middle of the day...no noticeable damage but we did get bumped. Felt lucky could have been some idiot at full speed.

So Cal Imports - had a similar kit for my super. Super headlights are not super. H4, just you have here, and much much better.

Hey Mike, just wondering if you could use those turn signal circuit boards for the headlights ?

Mike you're the man wow L E D lighting you can't go wrong but my question is do you need upgrade or convert the generator to altenator?
@Mikefngarage3 жыл бұрын
still 6 volt generator. less stress on it with LED. so will charge the battery faster. LED uses less energy so you can get even better MPG. and no need to upgrade generator.

You should try a dc to dc converter 6v to 12v, see if it works. As long as it's not pulling too much current it should run cool enough.
@Mikefngarage3 жыл бұрын
I was thinking about that for the headlights too. the only worry is if it fails while I am driving.

Mike another important question I how do you feel about halogen lights and taillight conversations?
@Mikefngarage3 жыл бұрын
they are bright. I used to like them more than regular ones. but I like the LED because they use less energy. Better MPG and power on that old 36 hp. probably not noticeable much but a little more efficient. If you cant get LED halogen are second best option.
@vayabroder7293 жыл бұрын
The car looks awesome; brighter lights are safer definitely. But 12V cars I let be to keep the old school charm. Very interesting video; are the rubber seals around the outside glass lenses in good shape? Those are a bitch to wrap around the lenses to get them installed, aren’t they?
