Nice video. Is there certain applications when you would definitely use the cover in a Dyneema eye splice? For example, jib sheets or when being cow hitched onto a deck eye...?

This depends a bit on the use. Strength wise they're both the same. With cover the splice is stiffer, but also more aesthetic. Without cover, the eye-splice is more flexible.

I can be difficult sometimes. And it can be a bit different between ropes. Reducing the size of the core would mean less strong.

why do this rather than leave the core on the eye? It would be nice if there were a description on these videos as to why or what application this splice is used.

We have a book for that with a lot of background info: www.premiumropes.com/splicingmodernropes In this case the cover is not used, because the Dyneema core has great UV resistance and carries all the load. When the core is made of Polyester, the cover needs to carry the load of the rope too and is therefore required in the eye-splice.

because this is basically easier and gives you a small, thin eye with plenty of strength. doing the cover over the eye takes more practice to make sure it all comes together properly and with especially tight weaves it is a bear to get the final bury.

With this type of rope, core dependant double briad, the core is doing the work and the cover is for abrasion resistance. I have done the full double braid eye and it is a horrible amount of work and easy to get wrong.

How could you do this but have an object attached to the eye?
