Craigslist did me right! Picked up a Speedaire 7.5hp/80 gal for $1000. Old man was moving and had a full fledged work shop in the back of his property. I tried to work him down but he held his ground. Got it on my truck, had my electrician install a 240 breaker and NEMA outlet, started blasting everything I could and I am happy. It is truly a monster, loud but a monster.

Nice setup. I would recommend adding a moisture filter with an auto drain after the aftercooler to keep the tank dry. I added an aftercooler and 2 filters with auto drain before the tank and my tank practically never gets water in it and the air is nice and dry.

The unit has an auto tank drain that goes off every time the pump shuts down. The receiver is actually a really good at condensing water, since it has a lot of thermal mass.

That was a great deal on the compressor ! I have bought and sold many over the years and Champion is a very good compressor. You will get many years of service out of that machine just do the maintenance and they last forever . My last purchase was a Saylor Beall 9000 on a 200 gallon tank that was in excellent condition I got from a surplus company for $1,299 . It has a 15 hp Baldor motor so I run it off of a rotary phase converter . It will fill up the tank to 175 psi in 4 1/2 minutes ! If you have the spare parts to sell let me know . Pedal down 😀

Is that new motor compressor duty rated? Compressors are very hard on electric motors and will eventually burn out a standard motor due to insulation failure. Compressor duty rated motors have higher rated insulation that can handle the excessive heat. I worked for a motor manufacturer for almost 40 years ad we saw a lot of motor failures with people that used a standard motor to run a compressor. These warranty claims would be rejected.
@HTMR

You could just build a phase adaptor. We used to have a neighbor in a residential area that had a garage full of three-phase machinist equipment and used a phase adapter to run all his machenery. It may have been modified 3 phase. He used a small electric motor to do it.

I consider my self somewhat a MacGyver. Single phase/3phase Roto-phase converters are available but quite expensive. I've seen some infromation on the newer 3phase inverters and I believe they make the extra two phases with the amps required being out of phase with the primary. so the demand is less. Finaly if the government is going to mandate electric home heating and electric cars the power companies are going to haveto upgrade all their lines to supply power where they now are getting along just with single phase, so running 3phase to our homes should become more reasonable. you may want to hang on to that 5Hp 3phase moter for a future project LL&P

Well, as far as the motor. Instead of buying a single phase motor, you could also have bought a VFD with a single phase input which will then put it to 3 phase for the motor. That was just an idea. But some things that you have to know about sizing the VFD is you have to get one that will withstand the amp draw and the rated 5 HP motor.
@HTMR

The goal was to spin the pump faster with a bigger motor and get more CFM. VFD won't do that.

How did you know the compressor would handle the 7 HP motor? I'm guessing the tank lists the max safe CFM. Keep up the great work!
@outerfroggy1
@outerfroggy1 Жыл бұрын
The pressure switch would cut out the electric motor at a set PSI (usually around 120-130). The only consideration would be the RPM which can be adjusted with pulley sizes. You could plop a 25hp industrial beast motor on that thing and the compressor pump wouldn't care.
@HTMR

Just so you know, running the compression block on a higher rpm will lead to higher temps and greater wear and tear. The higher cfm requires different cylinders and piston arrangements. P.S. I design and manufacture compressors for a living.
@HTMR
@HTMR Жыл бұрын
I understand that. However, this pump is sold in both 5hp and 7.5hp configs. The difference is motor size and pump RPM. @@HTMR Seems more like a case of false advertising wherein they used the same stock image. If you read the description, no specific information is provided about the cylinder or piston sizes. You can see how both the motors look identical as well. Sometimes companies can be lazy in taking professional photos of their products (I’m also guilty of the same). That said, it does mention running at a higher rpm. Could be a cost-cutting measure. The compressors that we manufacture have a whole separate block when we go to a higher cfm and motor rating. We do not run the block at a higher rpm cause it’ll just speed up the wear and tear. And since we engage in mostly B2B aimed at industries, we cannot afford such a blow to our reputation.
@HTMR

all your compressor is OK, the enclosure is really not OK, running a compressor is very like directly heating the appartment where it is located so on a long running time, the interior of the enclosude will become so hot that your aftercooler will become ineffective and of course the water separation will become ineffective.
