7 Achievement In-Jokes Where You Had to Be There

With certain achievements, game developers indulge in some crafty in-jokery that you'll only get with a bit of insider knowledge, leaving those not in the know utterly baffled as to what they've just unlocked and why. Many of the above achievements and trophies are based on events that took place at games industry megaconvention E3, such as the Stage Fright trophy from the recent PS4 smash Uncharted 4.
The Stage Fright trophy asks you to stand perfectly still for 30 seconds at the start of the game's city chase section. This is in reference to E3 2015 when, due to a technical glitch, the same thing happened during Sony's conference.
E3 is also responsible for the Peter Moore Achievement in hack-and-slash sidescroller The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai, which asks you to "pay homage to one of our generation's greatest rock performances ever".
That performance was the time legendary rocker and then Microsoft corporate vice president Peter Moore accidentally paused the game while playing Rock Band live at E3 2007. So, just screw up one of The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai's guitar solos by hitting the Xbox's guide button in the middle of it, and your gamerscore will be 8G better off. I guess you had to be there.
Other achievements reflect a behind-the-scenes bit of winking one-upmanship from game developers, such as how Dead Rising's Zombie Genocider achievement for slaying 53,594 zombies was followed by Left 4 Dead's Zombie Genocidest achievement for racking up 53,595 zombie kills. The population of the town of Willamette in which Dead Rising was set was 53,594, obviously.

Halo 3: ODST - Be Like Marty To get this achievement you have to go an entire round of the Firefight mode without killing a single enemy. This is a joke that stemmed from a test play of the Firefight mode, in which the music composer for the Bungie-made Halo games, Martin O'Donnell, hid in a corner without killing a single enemy for an entire round.

In the end I spent a good 60 hours on every trophy, and countless more whenever I felt that I needed more fun violence in my day. In The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile there's an achievement called "Bleep bloop!" where you have to "Get all achievables. Open presents, jump jump, squirtgun fight, kill squid, watch credits." This is a reference to the video "Achievements PSA" by Rooster Teeth where Caboose mistakes the word "achievements" for "achieveables." Apparently the devs are fans of the show.

Hey Oxbox, here's an idea for your next list video. Achievements which insult your intelligence, like the Darwin's Parachute achievement in Battlefield Bad Company which asks you to "glide in the parachute for 3 seconds" except there is no parachute so you just fall to your death. Or achievements which straight up make fun of you/achievements or times that actually ask you to stop playing the game, like the Get A Life achievement in Unreal Tournament 3 or the Go Get Some Sun achievement in Call Of Duty: World At War.

I like that a lot of these are based around game companies admitting their screw-ups and choosing to make a self-deprecating joke about it rather than try to cover it up or explain it away. Also, I just noticed that in British English, "niche" is pronounced "neesh" while in American, it's pronounced like "switch". Interesting.

On rails is a slang term that dates back to tabletop RPGs and refers to campaigns where the game (or the GM) has a specific idea in mind for how the game should progress and where it should go, and refuses to let the players interfere. This might mean just having a very linear story progression with no choices that actually affect the outcome of the game, or it could mean basically being along for the ride while the GM basically tells you a story. The term is a reference to the way that trains, being on rails, are strictly limited to a set path with no room for variation. In tabletop games it's also referred to as railroading and considered a sign of a GM who is either very inexperienced, very controlling, or just not creative enough to roll with his players choices and improvise on the fly. The single player campaigns of most FPSes would be considered on-rails because regardless of your choices, the outcome is the same. This is in contrast to more dynamic games like open world games and RPGs where you're given more choices as far as your play style and how and when you progress through the main story. In some like Skyrim you can even choose to ignore the main story altogether. Granted, there's nothing wrong with just having a playable narrative, and in fact I really enjoy many games that do. Most action-RPGs are designed like this, including The Darkness, Bioshock, and Darksiders. Call of Duty and Medal of Honor would also be on rails. But it's disappointing and jarring when you see it in a game that you expected to be open and dynamic, like an RPG.

Doom 2 on XBLA had possibly the most referencial achievements ever. They were mostly quotes from a 1996 promotional comic book put out by GT interactive, in which the writing is universally considered to be some of the worst/best ever penned. So much so that Doom 2016 also quotes it in it's story dialog. Honestly, type 'Doom Comic Dramatisation' into the search bar up top, it really is a thing of beauty.

You should do a video about the most illogical obstacles in video games; things like locked/barred doors: Like in skyrim clearing a fort where there's a room at the entrance but you have to go round the entire fort because you have a wooden door with a beam, although you have fire spells and a telekinetic blast shout, or weapons you can destroys the undead or dragons but can't get passed a wooden door

Rock Band 3 had an achievement called HOPO-cidal Maniac, which required you to hit 53,596 hammer-ons and pull-offs. I always thought that number was oddly specific, and now I know why.
