I had a Yamaha Pacifica. The lowest end model. That guitar stayed in tune better than any other guitar iv'e ever owned. And I'm talking $2k plus guitars. You could dive-bomb and pull on the trem like a lunatic and it would NEVER go out of tune. I don't know what sorcery Yamaha is using to build those things, but I highly recommend the Pacifica.
@M.S-Music

I confirm the above, i have 2 pacificas the 112V and 311H, the 311H is a pro- grade instrument, but the 112V although labeled as a beginners guitar i can fully agree that it stays in tune better than my now sold G SG, actually it stays very well in tune. Well the Gibson is out of my arsenal and there is 2 pacificas, both bought second hand for 20% of the price of one Crapson... Nothing beginner nor cheap in the Pacificas!!

I love my Schecter Hellraiser Extreme C-1 FR. Mine has a flamed maple top with crimson red burst in a satin finish and a flamed maple neck, and it looks gorgeous. I love the active EMG pickups, the coil tap on the neck, the separate volume controls, etc. My only complaint is that at 9.5 lbs it's heavier than I'd like. The standard Hellraiser C-1s can be found for $400-500 used and are a lot of guitar for the money. And they're only ~8.5 lbs. :)

@@zacharyclarke4240 The neck heel is the only thing I don't like about the Omen Extremes (and other lower priced Schecters) - they have a boxy neck heel like you find on Fenders, rather than the sculpted heel of Ibanez or Jackson. That's the one area where I feel Schecter needs to catch up. The heels on the more expensive set-neck and thru-neck guitars are amazing.

Ive had good luck with Japanese and Korean guitars. They are always cheaper and some feel honestly better than some guitars that are in the 500-1000 dollar ranges. The other cool thing is you can always mod a guitar if its the electronics that are bugging you. That is personally my favorite way of getting a nice sounding guitar because of all my years I haven’t heard the difference in terms of wood and shape. I’ve even experimented by switching some fishman pick ups in my Squire jagmaster and the more expensive fender version. I ironically play the squire more as well because I modded it to have the sound I want. Just experiment with cheap guitars until you find something that fits and you can teach yourself what you want from a guitar. Because some people want the gritty humbucker where others like the crisp single coil. Its all in preference. Cheers and blessings.

It’s sturdy, stays in tune and the finish is beautiful. Ibanez Artcore hollow bodies are great value for the price and make for good jazz guitars I think. I have one that was made in 2001, bought it used for $300 in 2005. It's one of the most comfortable guitars I've ever played, and other then the tuners needing to be replaced and the frets needing a leveling just recently (which are normal things for any 20 year old guitar), I've never had any problems with the guitar. I also replaced the stock pickups recently with a Seymour Duncan Benedetto A6 and a TV Jones Power Tron Plus and it's sounding really good now too.

Just making a comment about all the people who say they buy an Epiphone Les Paul and immediately tear out the pickups and replace with Gibson pickups. First off, the Epis aren't bad pickups. They sound pretty good, unless you get a really low end model like a special or something. But if that's what you want to do, you can just buy the Epiphone Tribute Plus that comes stock with Gibson '57's, switchcraft components and high quality capacitors. Never mind the hardshell case included. The pickups go for $320. The case $130. The switchcraft components are around $80. The guitar is only $800! With $530 worth of extras stock! That's $270 for the rest of the guitar. What a steal!

I own both low-end Yamaha and Ibanez guitars, although different models than the ones you mentioned (they're both HSH), and been ever happy with them. The only other guitar I wish I'd bought was a natural finished Godin which was awesomely amazing for the price tag; I tried a few guitars in that time, and it's the only one I'd have happily thrown money at. Meanwhile, my 200CAD Yamaha got me going for very long, until I realized how bad the pickups were in that thing (it's over 20 years old by now; cheap electronics was cheap indeed back then). That's when I upgraded for the Ibanez; I'm very happy ever since. Replacing the cheap plastic pickguard with a custom-made wood one improved the tone even more, especially when playing unplugged. Such a pleasure!

One of my "guitar mentors" used to say about trying used guitars, half in jest: "Put some green painter's tape over the logo, or wear a blindfold while trying them out." There's a bit of truth there. One excellent find has been the Peavey JF1-EX. It's visually similar to an ES-335, but not a straight copy. On the used market, I've seen them anywhere from CAD$200 to $500. I got a great "keeper," immaculate, for CAD$225. It was worth finding a hard case for. The JF1-EX's are well made, & very high quality throughout. Components as well as fit & finish are superb. Mine is a deep rich red with all gold hardware; I've seen black and sunburst finishes also. An unusual thing is the neck (by design) being tilted 10 degrees up from horizontal. It doesn't detract visually, and it's comfortable. Peavey did a great job with the JF1 neck, especially if you have smaller hands. The stock Peavey pickups are very good. I was going to change them out, but they really are excellent as they come. I did change out one tone capacitor to a lower value, but that's personal taste. A JF1-EX can be an outstanding find. A Varitone, or even the full "Jimmy Page" wiring setup would be a good mod on this guitar - you're starting with something that already sounds good. Wiring mods are pretty easy, cost little, and can add extra tone combinations. As always, Darrell, thanks for the vid! Merry Christmas from AB.

Great choices and video, Darrell! I agree with some others that the Epiphone G400s, especially the G400 Pro '66 is an amazing value for the money. I had the non-pro '61 and it was still a good guitar but not quite as good as they are now. I have an alpine white one that I adore and it was like $369 new. Other than that, I feel for $799 the Epiphone Les Paul Tribute Plus (USA pickups, selector, pots, input jack, tuners, and some other stuff) is incredible value (I own one in black cherry), but I wouldn't call that low cost unless we're speaking relative to Gibson (especially given the perfection of the fit and finish). Ultimately, as you said, the standard is still amazing with those Probuckers or the Probucker/Alnico Classic Pro combo. I had one of those as well in cherry sunburst before the tribute, and while the sound of the latter is something to behold, the plus top pro served me plenty well until I upgraded and was $499 new.

Hello, how much $ is cheap for you ? I tried once a low price Harley Benton, say €180, but it was finally very expensive considering it can not play correctly. On the other hand the new MIM Fender Player Strat is very "cheap" considering that for €600 you have an excellent instrument on par with US made strat at $1500. Cheap or expensive also depends on your project, where to play ? Home, gig, concerts ?

@@gillesgenete9598 MIM Strats are great but... They are not equal to an American Standard Strat. MIM Stratocasters are a fine choice but they are not on par with the American Made ones and they also cost more because in the end they lose their value. If you plan on playing at home or with friends MIM Strats are a GREAT choice. If you want to up you game spend the extra money. It is worth it.

For sub $1000 here’s my list: 1. *Used American Standard Strat* If you know where to look you can find these used all over Reverb. If you find an SSS model just simply wire them in series to create a humbucker. 2. *Solar Guitars* Excellent guitars for metal and other genres that are perfect out of the box. Cheapest one is $600 I believe 3. *Agile Epic 625* Can be found brand new on Reverb for $400 + 20 dollar shipping. Has a roasted maple neck and stainless frets. 4. *Wolf W200* A decent Korean made PRS copy. Stock pickups are good and plays well. Only mod I would personally do is change the nut to a Graphtech one. Price is $359 shipped. They also make a decent Les Paul copy. 5. *Gibson 2019 DC* Can be found on Reverb around $600 in mint condition. Excellent American made guitar. 6. *Schecter KM-7 standard* Hasn’t been released yet but judging by the specs and Schecter’s quality in that price range it’ll be nice. 7. *Used Mexican Strat* Whatever you can find that has had some minor mods or do it yourself.

A Strat-style guitar...the fit and finish are amazing, no hair line cracks where the neck and body join, black paint job that almost looks liquid, all the body contours are what they should be and where they should be; a beautiful maple fingerboard, straight and smooth with a satin finish; all the electronics are perfect and flawless---either GLARRY seriously got their act together or I got unusually lucky. I can't speak to the luck anyone else either had or hasn't had, but I got all this for $65.99, shipping included! Way to go GLARRY. Far-out, right?

Very Cool! Great video - I'm always heartened by those who assess a guitar for its merits and omit the snobbery. The truth is that the world is awash in great guitars in the $400-$600 range - especially on the used market. As someone who hit his teens in the late 70s, I can tell you that the guitar nowadays in this range are often as good or better than the higher priced name brand instruments (i.e. medium price for a name brand) were at the time. Back then, anything under $200 (over $700 in today's money) would have had so-so pick-ups, bad action, and questionable electronics. (I'm looking at you Hondo II Les Paul copy....). Kids these days don't know how good they have it. Over the past couple of years, I've bought an embarrassing number of higher end Epiphones, Squiers (CVs and VMs), MIM Fenders, Danelectros, Gretsches and a few other brands. In some cases stock, in others with a few upgrades (better tuners, nut, pick-ups, electronics). I've picked up several Epiphone Les Pauls on Reverb, where the previous owner upgraded to locking tuners, bone nut, better electronics, and Gibson/Duncan/Dimarzio/EMG pick-ups and sold it for around $400, with a gig bag or HS case. The classic vibes can hold their own with the MIM Fenders, which in turn can usually hold their own with the MIAs, although they might not be quite so nice in fit and finish -they all play and sound great. If I miss that old vanilla nitrocelullose smell, I figure I can pick up a bottle of vanilla extract from the grocery store and rub it on my guitar every few weeks. At least with polyester/polyurethane finishes, I don't have to worry about my guitars spontaneously combusting..... I know you made your list short for the sake of brevity. My top votes for omitted guitars: G400 Pro series from Epiphone (great SG versions that roar and stay in tune better than the originals they are modeled after). In fact, any Epiphone guitars using "Pro" series pick-ups need to be checked out. I have several guitars with actual Gibson pick-ups in them, and I have to concentrate to hear the difference, when A/B-ing them with the Epi Pros . So anything Epiphone Pro - 335, 339, etc.... is worth checking out. An underdog I would recommend as well would be some of the medium to higher end (3000 series and above) Agile guitars (I think they are a Rondomusic house brand made in Korea). I have a baritone Les Paul style and a fretless 12 string Les Paul Style, and they are very high quality -very sturdy, good, detailed binding/finish, 18:1 Grover tuners, good pick-ups, great fit and finish -overall, very impressive. Agufish reviewed one or two a while back and was blown away by them. Given the quality, I'm convinced they are made in the Epiphone factories between Epiphone runs....

Bought off of FB Marketplace from a guy that needed money to buy his "new" girlfriend a Christmas gift. He was asking $400.00 and I showed him the $320.00 cash I had in my wallet. Done. It's like new and is setup perfectly. These compact guitars are fantastic from the Indonesian built Standard, to the Mexico built Special (if you can buy a used made in Japan Special for less than $1000.00 in good condition... Snatch it up. I have a 2010 MIJ and love it), or a USA built Wolfgang are all great and have the best necks I've ever played. The Standard may be the best one for even seasoned players for gigging or practice. As the price goes up, you actually get more serious, with better hardware like SS frets (I don't play enough, or well enough that I need these). I'd love to hear you play one! while they are ROCK machines, they clean up really nice! Merry Christmas Darrell
