Of course there's a little more clearance than you'd like, side cover must be on, it helps hold up that end of the cam!

Exactly- quite big difference when cover on and camshaft sated correctly

Funny that on my engine, with the side cover on, the intake is ok, but the exhaust is tight. How does the exhaust valve grow in length when it should wear a little shorter? I did swap the lifters around to see if I mixed them up, but it's the same either way. Edit: Ok, the wife is out of town so I had no need to turn on the thinking device. Lap the valve and it will sink in just a little into the block. My exhaust valve was not burnt but not pretty and it took a while to lap a decent face on it. I must have lowered it a few thousandths not to mention the normal wear from running.

Valves don't grow. The valve seats and valve faces always wear at a greater rate than the end of the stem where the tappet pushes on it. Your exhaust valve will burn if there is not enough "contact time" with the valve seat to cool the valve. If you like your Briggs and Stratton engine, you will set your exhaust valve up looser than spec by a few thousandths of an inch which will make the exhaust valve live forever in these engines. I don't care what it says to do in the Briggs and Stratton service manual. The published valve specs are too tight for these engines.

why do you have to advance it a quarter of an inch. is it the same for the 6hp Quantum 12h802 engine.?
@RealManSkills8 жыл бұрын
+rockartistet I am just following the instructions from the repair manual. Yes, the same book covers the Quantum engines and says to advance 1/4 inch. Thanks for watching.

What type of coating is on the block? Has it been spray painted or powder coated?
@RealManSkills9 жыл бұрын
kaiok1777 It has been spray painted with high heat primer and high heat engine paint. Thanks for watching.

How in the hell do you check valve lash with the side cover off. Your cam is not in position.

Did you miss the part where I put a note on the bottom saying as much? Thanks for watching.

Is it just me or is does this guy have this backwards? He refers to the exhaust as the intake and vice versa.
@RealManSkills7 жыл бұрын
It's you. I am correct in pointing out the exhaust vs intake. Thanks for watching.

Intake valve is on the flywheel side . Look where the tank bolts are. Exhaust is on the clutch side. Example a 3 to 4.5 hp briggs on a lawn mower. The tank and carb is on top and the intake is on top. The exhaust is on the bottom where the muffler comes out. ~!~!

0.005 also known as 5 thousandths of an inch. Thanks for watching.

sblg43 ok. And I always thought the piston has to be on the highest Position in the cylinder to check the distance with a feeler gage?! So the correct position is a quarter inch down= 1/4 x 25,4mm=6,35mm, right?
@RealManSkills7 жыл бұрын
According to the Briggs and Stratton repair manual, yes.
@MartyMartin877 жыл бұрын
a quarter inch down or the highest position of the piston?

As shown in my video, 1/4 inch past TDC (Top Dead Center)
