There are several other cars that should have been on this list. The original defender (over 40 years), 70/76/79 series Land Cruiser (~36 years), heck, even the Nissan Frontier (19 years). The only things they changed in those 19 years were the engine and transmission...in the last model year, 2020. Edit: Japanese pickup trucks, particularly the full size ones, should be on this list. The first gen titan was in production for 11 years, the Tundra was in production for 14. And all they changed in that amount of time was the interior and exterior styling (slightly). Engines and transmissions remained the same. Their full size SUVs don't get any love, either. Toyota finally redesigned the Land Cruiser, but the Patrol has been in production since 2011, and there are no signs of a redesign any time soon.

Very interesting video indeed. I knew about some of them. The Hindustan Ambassador was a rebadged 1956 Morris Oxford. The Mini was designed for Austin first, badged as the SE7EN. The Morris Mini Minor followed. In time there were Riley and Wolseley variations on the common theme. The after market got in the act and produced some that were as luxurious and elegant as a Rolls-Royce. I do believe that the Volvo 140/240 series deserves a mention. 25 years on the market and considered the safest car you could buy for most of that run is pretty impressive. I know the model designation changed, but the roofs, upper and lower cowls, doors, floor pans, and tailgate are the same parts. I believe the 240 is the only regular production car that can boast of 3 consecutive years with zero fatalities.

This is a common misunderstanding, the Morgan frame isn't made of wood, but metal. The support structure for the body panels and other items are of wood.
@syberracer29843 жыл бұрын
This is true. The actual chassis is Aluminium, while the main body frame is wood. The reason why they use wood is because it is a soft material. If they went with composites or metal for the body frame, there would be too much vibration, making for a harsh ride. They use wood to smooth out those vibrations and make the ride more comfortable. I have actually visited the factory in Malvern and have seen the process of building a Morgan. The process has not changed a lot in the many years the company has been around, only modernised to decrease production time.

The VW type 1 is an icon with still hold the world record of the highest number of model sold. It is a blessing that parts are still around to get the bugs continue to run. We will see how these classic would survive as the whole car industry transit to EVs.
@CaptHollister3 жыл бұрын
The Type I has been outsold by VW's own Golf. It's a moot point anyhow because the most sold motor vehicle in the world is the Honda Cub: introduced in 1959 it has sold 100 million units so far and still counting, a figure that doesn't include the countless legal and illegal Chinese clones.

Lada 1200 deserved a honorable mention here. This AWD-tuned Fiat 124 somehow was so perfect, its production outlasted the Soviet Union and even entered deep into the modern era. Lada officially made the last of these in 2012, although somehow the production still continued in Egypt until 2015.

Don't forget the Super 7, made by Lotus 1957-1972, then in 1973 Caterham bought the rights to the model and still makes it today! Of course, it has evolved over the years but it's construction is still the same.

Ah, this was a great topic, there are quite a few cars that lasted a long while. My favorite on this list is the original Mini. The Morgan is a close second. With that said, I think the last 3 cars are a Toyota Land Cruiser (J70), Mk.1 VW Golf (I'm guessing because of the CitiGolf), and the Renault 4. Other cars that lasted quite long include the Argentina-Spec Ford Falcon (1962-1991), the Lada Riva (1980-2012), Yugo 45 (1980-2008), and the FJ40 Land Cruiser (1960-2001).

The first and last Beetles didn't really have much common though. It retained the general shape, but very few parts were interchangeable. Maybe side windows and doors, but that's about it. It changed a lot over the years, but unless you study the details of each update you wont notice. Part for part the first Beetles had as much in common with the last ones as the first Corollas did with the latest models.
@reynardkitsune12 жыл бұрын
The major difference between the Type 1 and the Corolla is that while the basic layout and the shape of the Beetle remained virtually unchanged during the production, each generation of the Corolla was a new construction (even changing from RWD to FWD). One advertisement for the Beetle even stressed the fact that of the 4000+ parts, only one (a clip in the boot) remained unchanged. Yet, almost everyone recognize a Beetle on the spot while the majority would have a hard time recognizing each Corolla generation.
