I never had one of those, I never had a Memorex tape actually, maybe its because I started buying cassettes in the early/mid 90s, but I really like the way they look. They remind me of Goldstar and in the 90s, their Type 1s were still in that sort of retro black shell with that tiny window in the middle. I used to buy a lot of those and Maxell URs (when they were green for a while). But as tapes, Goldstar were always the longest in running time, so even if they were inferior to Maxell, when I was going to make a compilation I always went for Goldstar. Thank you for the video Tony... I'm really looking forward to the next one later on today :)

To take up for USA cassette production, the Realistic (Radio Shack) supertapes were pretty good in the early 90's when they ran their own cassette factory in Texas and the last generation of Ampex/Quantegy that were made in the last cassette factory in the USA in Alabama were also great tapes!

@@CassetteComeback I used so many USA realistic supertapes back then and they have held up well. I have many Ampex and Quantegy branded type II 472 cassettes that are labeled made in USA with the Alabama address. Used them a ton on my Tascam 4 track back in the 90's. I also have several boxes of Quantegy AVX type 1 tapes that were made in USA, even have that stamped on the plastic cassette shell before they moved that production to Korea.

In those Pump Up The Volume days it was the UD1-S and XL1-S here with the UD1-S often being found in packs of three that was my Super Ferric of choice which my then decks could pack a great sounding signal on to. I'm sure they'd sound terrific on your current Naks. My brother did use the MRX1S and I'd agree a pretty good cheap offering in plain jane" attire for a little less than those Maxell offerings or the TDK AD which was a darn fine offering back then. Discovering AR and AR-X the year later blew my mind! Thanks for a great video.

It's just a Saehan shell of that day, they used the same shell to make cassettes for different brands. Actually, as early as 1982 Fuji DR had the same shell, and there was a Japanese OEM manufacturer Soda Nikka Company which made same shells, at some point they sell their own SNC cassets to USSR - first batches were made in Japan, than started to come from Korea "Made under instructions from Soda Nikka Company, Japan", so I wonder, could it be that Samsung just bought equipment from SNC, and relocated it to Korea?

Maybe you've already made videos about this (and I'm just bad at searching), but I would really like to learn how to treat different formula cassettes, you say a doped up ferro can handle +3 levels, how about true chrome, metal, etc? Also, it would be very interesting to know your take on the different factories, like you mentioned that the UK Memtek made a better job than the US one. Are Japanese factories better than Korean, Malaysian, etc? How about the German, Swedish and Dutch ones. Looking forward to the next "chapters". As always, thanks for sharing!

Bear in mind that Memorex was bought by Tandy and Tandy started manufacturing Memorex tape. So here in the USA the MRXI was USA made by Tandy at this time. The overseas market was outsourced to the likes of Saehan and you would have seen many tapes we didn't see here, however, if you ever get a chance to try out some USA Memorex manufactured by Tandy I'm sure you'll think more highly of them than the former. Contrary to what some think the Memorex formulas still remained separate from the Realistic ones. Memorex tapes even early on were pretty good, but the Tandy Magnetics ones were better.

Hello Saehan already had a shell with a large window at that time, for example used in the Konica KX-HR around that period, or it was later and they just didn't catch up. Memorex used these Saehan cassettes with the large window, according to vintagecassettes, only in the 1991-92 series for Europe. There were both clear and shell with large window, for the Type I and II versions. I tried this cassette in 2017, but found its sound to be mediocre, mainly lower level and bias out of range. In your video, it's considerably better. Regards EZ

Good idea to not push much beyond +3 dB. As you state, there's no good reason to do so. Why get needless distortion if you don't have to? Thanks for the video! Still loving my cassette decks and will as long as I can. Still hoping against hope that ONE manufacturer will bite the bullet and offer a good cassette mechanism with decent heads having a 30Hz to 17KHz response. That's the only thing that might keep cassettes around as a legitimate marketing tool and record/playback medium. I'm not holding my breath though.

@@tvelektron Yeah, but is a type 1 tape even worth repairing? I mean you can still splice tape without opening the case. I don't use them for music, only Type II or IV get the music recordings. Type 1 comedy or spoken word stuff like recordings of the Howard Stern show.

@@AudioGuyBrian It is not about the cassette, it is mainly about the recording. early 90s a favorite mix tape tape snapped inside a my scoolfriends cheap and poorly maintained walkman type player was a certain annoyance that comes to mind at least when you buy new tapes 🤭
@AudioGuyBrian
@AudioGuyBrian Жыл бұрын
@@tvelektron Indeed they can be a pain at times. Of the nearly 1,000 blanks I have had over the years (Mostly Maxell XLII and XLIIS), I have had to open a few of them for a pressure pad metal "spring" that somehow fell out of place at the Maxell factory and made it out the door like that. I think I also had to fix one or two for the tape leader pulling out of the reel hub. That was really weird because that is a pretty tight fit and a rare defect. I think the little plastic piece was too small and remember having to fold the leader over so it was double thick and it would finally stay put. I have heard of people popping the welded tapes apart using a lot of patience and an exacto knife. Personally I don't have many mix tapes. I backup all my LPs to cassette so I can put them away and keep them in Mint condition for possible resale years later. Almost all my Vinyl Albums going back as far as 38 years ago look brand new due to me relying on cassettes when I want to listen to the album instead of pulling the record out and risking potential damage to the cover or the record itself.
