My new way to water is using milk jugs with a tiny hole pricked in it for a slow drip. I just make sure every plant has their own jug which makes monitoring water amount easier and everything is doing so well through the summer so far, including new baby transplants in this 97 degree heat.

That's a great use of milk jugs! Are you burying the jugs next to the plants like an olla? Or are you just putting them next to the plant on top of the soil? I'm just starting a container garden and I've been thinking of using ollas but they'd take up so much room in my containers.

@@jennywren76 I just put them on top of the soil, then I can grab them and refill them all without dragging the hose. My other advice would be put the hole about 2 inches from bottom so a little water remains and the jug won't blow away lol I've learned that the hard way.

Great timing! Last season I tossed an old cucumber into my yard and forgot about it. I had just added new soil to plant something else and when I went back I had tons of cucumber plants coming up. I'm going to test a toss and grow garden... See if it works

Your videos have inspired us to garden. We bought our house about 2 years ago, and the previous owner raised bird dogs in the backyard. The backyard barely has grass, the ground is very uneven, and it just isn't serving us. We are hoping to basically turn our backyard into gardens with paths between them. I so love this channel. I have a small garden as well in my backyard here in Florida and I use no pesticides, fertilizer, growth hormones, etc. I just water my plants with rainwater, and if rain is scarce, I use filtered tap water. It rains here almost every day this summer and my plants are so green and healthy. Mother nature is taking care of all of them. Thank you for sharng all these wonderful videos. The last couple years here in Middle Tennessee I've had a hard time with cucumbers. This year growing the Bet Alpha Israeli cucumber, it is raining cucumbers and they are absolutely delicious. Good tips. I agree covering with insect netting when young. I don't bother spraying for cucumber beetles. I just succession grow them.

Hi James and Tuck I’m in north Tx and when my cucumbers start growing they turn yellow and die. Yes it’s been in the triple digits for a while and I water everyday. Top is dry quick yet bottom of bucket is wet. Plants are all producing yellow fruit. I love your channel and especially enjoy Supervisor Tuck.

I know what your talking about, I live in south Tx near the gulf and its been like 108. I think what you should do is add more holes in the bucket to prevent root rot since its always wet, and mulch heavily. You could use gardenstraw for the mulch it works great for me or just some leaves

What about planting marigolds around tomatoes and cucumbers for the beetles? Great harvest James,. I'm in Arizona high desert so it's always a water issue. I'm going to plant this year in large pots with the bottoms cut out and the pot planted in the ground a few inches that way I'm hoping to concentrate the water and control the water flow. We have in our channel all the struggle we went though and we are done until the fall. This drought is the worst we have seen in a very long time. Blessing to you and your family.

That's a smart move, and if you add some journal entries to that of what you are doing and how your season is going, you will find that to be of great value to you in the future. Some of my own garden journals are my greatest guides to the growing season

In Georgia, we use 3 layers newspaper, 4 " pine straw. We leave 2 feet between plants, in tomato cages. We plant directly in the ground.

Im keeping an eye out for the cucumber beetles cause im growing mainly pickling cucumbers this year and i know they attract more beetles. I have the spinosad and it seems to be working so im just gonna keep using that i think. I also use it on my brassicas cause i had horrible worm damage. Not so much anymore. I use it on all my plants. But the cucumbers are growing well so far and no beetle damage. Hope ir stays that way. I know another trick is to keep them up off the ground and that helps deter the beetles.

My favorite gardening channel!!! Hello James and Tuck. My cucumbers are already burning up and dying back, and have almost quit producing. I overhead water them. I know I need to figure out a better way. But they're only 8 weeks old! I haven't seen any beetles. Can you see them or do you think they just lack water? I water them an hour a week with my sprinkler. I'm in the south and its been so so hot!!

Mine are struggling too. I'm in southern Missouri and it's hotter than hot. I water everyday! I use a drip irrigation system and run it for at least an hour a day. Then I check the moisture of the soil every day... In the morning or late evening. And I put up shade cloth... That my son bought from Amazon... It's 60%. Maybe James can try it out and post it on his site?? It's really helped protect them. So I'm getting a few... And waiting for cooler weather.
