Can I continue to use the fiddle leaf fig food all year round, or should I stop for the winter? It really has made such a difference.

Hi Kimberly, that is a great question! If your plant is in consistent indoor conditions all year long and continues to put out new growth, it is best to continue fertilizing. However, if your plant goes into a dormant period in the winter months, it's fine to not fertilize and pick back up in the springtime.

What about how to STOP a plant from branching? I trimmed mine for being too tall and removed the top 2 nodes and lowered the light source below the top of the plant. All that did was make it dormant for 3 months until it regrow from the node that I didn't want growing

A good problem to have! ;-) The plant will naturally grow and branch when pruned. If you want to stop it from growing, slowly move it to a darker corner in your home. 1 foot per week or slower. This way it acclimates to darker conditions and stops / slows the growth, but it will remain healthy.

Can I notch and prune a fiddle leaf fig at the same time? My tree is healthy but old leaves are pointing down. I’d like to give it a do-over but I don’t want to send it in shock. Thank you for your great videos!

I would do one method first and wait 6-8 weeks for your plant to recover then try the other method. Happy Growing!

Hi Claire, I have a fiddle leaf fig tree looks exactly as the one at 0:21. It has stayed this way for a year and only grows leaves slowly on top of each branch. What can I do to revive the tree? Should I just cut off the entire top (all the branches) all together and let it grow new branches/leaves from the top of the trunk? Or maybe it's safer to just notch the bottom of each branch? Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!

Thank you for watching and I hope your plant is healthy despite the bare spaces on the stems! Make sure your plant is getting plenty of light. This will aid in the process of new growth and new branches. For more growth towards the bottoms of the branches that are there, try notching to achieve a more full look. I would continue to try new areas to notch. If you try at least 3 spots, one should be successful. But notching is a hit or miss process. Pruning is great at producing new branches!

If the part you notched too deep is hanging off, it sounds like you accidentally pruned your plant. You can take the cutting and propagate it into a new plant and new branches will form just below where the pruned cut happened. Otherwise, if the part above the notch is still standing and not tipping over, leave the plant be as it is and branches may come out just below the point where you notched. Happy Growing!

No, the overall tree will continue to get taller, the notching is the method to encourage branches to form right below where you make the notch.

Yes, it may be a temporary reaction or your plant is getting thirsty. Check if the top inches of soil are dry, if they are, it's time for a drink!

Absolutely! It sounds like you are caring for it really well when it is already 10 feet tall! Congrats! Pruning the top will encourage more branches to grow just below where you make the chop. Propagate the cutting and you have a brand new plant!

Hi Daniel, if the stem inside is not dry/hollow the plant will be able to fully regrow. Chop it down and place it in the sunnies spot you have and water when the top inches of soil are dry. It will come back! Happy Growing!

Mine is 2 meter and only on the last part it got leaves, 16, so it’s a bit woody on the lower part. Also it’s just one stem… can I notch this one on the lower part of the plant to get new branches/leaves…. Nice and factual video👍🏻

I would wait for the plant to be fully mature with a bark covered stem as a younger plant will not take to notching. If you would like new branches, consider pruning when your plant has reached the height you like. The main stem will not get taller, but the branches that form, will. Happy Growing!

Hi June, that is a great question! Young trees that have green stems will not respond to notching. Your plant needs to be a mature plant with a woody stem to have notching work. Thank you for the video! I have a fiddle leaf fig that is approximately 3' tall with a woody trunk/stem. At one time it was unintentionally neglected so it lost all the leaves below 2/3 height. It is healthy now, though very linear. I worry that it may get too top heavy and start to bend, and I found your videos. I immediately ordered some propagation promoter, but I have a question: If I notched my Ficus on the long, defoliated stem, do you think it would sprout branches there?

Yes, it could if the injury is deep enough to disrupt the dormant leaf buds. I would give it a try!
