U're saying bullshet, no body knows what they exactly did or not, was it tails or not. Did u see it with ur own eyes back then? Historiens and people only interpreate what's left of that time, fact is it's mostly 90% times wrong you find some random book written by some shithead guy and believe everything written in it, history is 90% falsified by the people who writte it (winners). 1) who cares? 2) Bloodeagle is very hard to do but still is a wonderful torture, you say all the vikings did was tie people and shot arrows but u're far away from the crualty back then just look at all the tortures Christians used and you realy believe that VIKINGS (10 times more crual/barbarian than CHRISTIANS) only shot some arrows ? Pity of you 3) Your commercial toothpaste focks ur teeth more than if u did brush them without it. 4) We are talking about VIKINGS not Northmens, vikings are very little part of the Northmens you aren't born viking you become it, they are only the strongest warriors not pussays like you. 5) Who cares 6) Who cares 7) Your basicly saying that berserksers were some dancing drugged pussays that's your interpreatation i personally believe that they were bloodthirsty warriors who became the animal they were on their head, you don't send dancing drugged people in the first line of a battle field... Your truth is a lie to me, my truth is a lie to you, everything is true and false to everyone there is no REAL TRUTH about Vikings there is only people's lies they believe in. People Live their Lives bound by what they accept as correct and true. That is how they define "Reality" . But what does it mean to be "correct" or "true"? They are merely vague concepts... Their "Reality" may all be a mirage. Can we consider them to be simply living in their own world, shaped by their beliefs?
@derdingsreturnsnochmal51777 жыл бұрын
2. maybe, maybe not. I personally wouldn't be surprised if it was real though. 3. Brushing your teeth is an instinct. Don't believe me? Animals do it. Look at crocodiles, sharks, ... The toothpick was a germanic invention ( Norsemen are northern Germanics), the tooth brush exists since the Egyptians ( though I have to admit that I don't know if it was used in Scandinavia back then), and Norsemen where described as being the cleanest people of their era ( and the others weren't exactly rolling in the dirt either) -> if not with a tooth brush, you can clean your teeth rudimentary by rubbing wet sand over them -> wash it all out -> maybe chew on a few herbs to optimise the smell of your breath 4. Not really. This was common practice throughout cultures. Children so sickly, that they would have been left to die would most likely not have survived anyway, though.
@derdingsreturnsnochmal51777 жыл бұрын
2. First: Barbarian means "Outlander". :P Second: What makes you believe that Vikings would have been any worse than christians? 4. True that a Norseman isn't automatically a viking. But "viking" can be translated in different ways, the most "common" being: "Searaider". You're noone special if you become a viking. It just means you're on a ship, looking for loot.
@mortenharrysson81367 жыл бұрын
Berserker wore bear skin while ulvhedner wore wolf skin. My personal belief when it came to berserker is that it was a group of aging warriors who wanted to die in battle before they got to old to join in viking. Dying bravely in battle was important for the most fanatical viking warriors, so that they would come to Valhalla to feast and fight alongside with their gods (Frigg, Balder, Hød, Brage, Idun, Heimdal, Frøy, Frøya, Tyr, Tor, Loke and Odin) until ragnarok destroyed Midgard (the home of man) Åsgard (the home of their gods) and Utgard (The home of the ogre like jotuns) Most norsemen lived their life as farmers, traders and craftsmen. Some of the more adventurous souls went into viking or to explore for new land to settle or to find new trade routes.

Exactly ! Like the most misleading thing is calling every Norse native - Viking...Like this stereotype need to stop ! The Berserker stuff is also false...
@Peteru697 жыл бұрын
I think "false" is misleading, because lets be honest, we just don't know that much about the vikings other than what others wrote about them. We don't have a great deal of scripture from the vikings themselves. It's folklore and sagas and a couple of rune stones here and there. Other than the actual archaeological finds that still leaves a lot of guess work.
@TheShendalorian7 жыл бұрын
Well you said it - We dont know that much about them,which directly excludes the Berserker stuff,that is rediculous by just saying someone ate some shrooms and started running naked into battle,and especially the vanguard...Berserkers were most probably just the champions of a certain Jarl,the only bear connection is that they could've worn Bear Skin over their armor/clothing...And then there is the possibility someone translated it wrong and Berserker is not Bear-skin, but rather Bear-shirt...The child abandonment is also a bit false,since the Norsemen were not only farmers(part-time Vikings) and warriors,but also traders and merchants,a rather weak child could become one of these..

Vikings were mostly traders & they always looked for new trade routes and settlement locations, hence the visits to all around the europe, america & africa. Sure they raided, but so did everyone else, sure they had slaves, but so did everyone else. But unlike others they traveled/traded/settled across the sea from NA to africa. Everything UNTIL berserkers was correct. And then it all fell off the deep end... Listen, the vikings, for one, were not a people. Viking is actually both a verb and a noun, with the latter meaning "a person who goes viking" - aka travels in order to find more land on which to settle and grow crops. Very little people know that. Berserkers are similar in a sense that no one has a bloody clue what they are. A berserker is basically what later European aristocrats and monarchs would call a champion - a formidable warrior of extreme strenght and technique which jarls would use to threaten each other and solve conflicts (the berserkers fought each other - similar to a duel) and so on. "Going berserk" is a phrase based on an ancient misconception. The accounts of people suddenly going apeshit and breaking formation during battle to do some ridiculous things like biting shields and throwing oneself onto the enemy is a case of mental issues, extreme anger or overexcitement. No records show even a hint of berserkers doing that - they were extremely well-trained killing machines, not mad bears and surely not a special unit... And they weren't druggies either... heard a bunch of really intelligent people saying something about eating poisonous mushrooms to go berserk and just couldnt fucking believe my ears. (edit: the part about mad wolves is a poor translation of one of the sagas, in which.... i believe a leader of some sort or maybe part of the norse royalty began acting weirdly as he was rallying his troops and threatening the enemy over a distance. He bit his shield, howled and grinned etc etc.)

"Viking men were known to be heavily tattooed" ? There has literally NEVER been any evidence for this. There might (MIGHT!) have been a couple of guys walking around tattooed but no archaeological findings (such as well-preserved bodies) nor anything written (like in the Sagas) has ever suggested that tattoos were a standard thing anywhere in Scandinavia at the time.
@Randi-k6m6 жыл бұрын
There has never been found human remains from the Viking Age so well preserved as to determinate if they were tattooed or not. The Arab diplomat Ibn Fadlan who met a group of Vikings described them as being tattooed “with animals, trees and some figures”. In Denmark needles for tattooing has been found dating back to the Bronze Age, which began 2200 years before the Viking Age. Tattoos have been known for thousands of years; when the Roman conquered England 2000 years ago, they described Celts and Picts from Scotland as tattooed. Also were the Turks and the Skytes from Iran. Vikings loved colours and art and were described as being vain, so unless tattoos went out of fashion between the Bronze Age and the Viking Age, I think there is a strong possibility they were tattooed.
@shieldmaiden0006 жыл бұрын
Limaien, I agree wholeheartedly. I study Vikings and only a very few were discovered with tattoos. I commented about his statement above before I seen your comment about that subject. And to Randi...the Celts and Picts were not Viking era people when the Romans were there. You need to study your history more. The Vikings did not come until after the Romans left England. And the Vikings did love their bodies, that is why they did not mar them up with tattoos.

@TheShendalorian7 жыл бұрын
Why would the name mean this ? Are you serious...Berserkers were not some crazy guys on shrooms,than ran naked into battle,Scandinavia was not Hollywood...First of all wearing the Bear pelt itself could show a high status,maybe a Jarl's champion,but definetely not wearing it while being naked...Second it could be mistranslated into Bear-skin,while it is actually Bear-shirt...Don't give Wikipedia as your back up source, this itself is a reason for every person who is actually history educated to laugh at you,since everyone can type any kind of shit in Wikipedia :)

"Craziest things" -> used eyeliner and dyed their hair. ... xD lol hard! ( Berserkers aren't a proven fact. There are several theories around them. The above is just one possibility. I personally like Lindybeige's guess the most: that Berserker means champion. Also a "Berserker" wearing a wolf skin would be an "Ulfhaedinn".)
@Gorea19227 жыл бұрын
I actually really like that guess! Another Hypothesis about Berserkers I really like (since everyone said it that there is no actual evidence as to whether they actually existed and if what their purpose was, or not) is that Berserkers were "just" a Tribe which had similar rites like "regular" Vikings but still were somewhat different. But yeah since there is no actual evidence for any of it, it just remains speculation... Even if all the speculating and things you could come up with are the most fun part about our history, I'd still love to know the truth about everything that happened in our past. Cheers

So much misinformation in this video... "violence was part of a vikings everyday life" No, it wasn't. Most people in Northern Europe either lived in solitary farms, tending their fields and cattle and go fishing, or in small villages, where everyone knew each other. Vikings, seafaring folk, were the only "violent" group of Norse people, and even then it was only during raids on Christian settlements. And even THAT was only in the early times of the vikings, we all know by now that for the most part of their culture, vikings became respected tradesmen and merchants. "they left their sick children out in the woods" I very highly doubt that. Even in the harshest regions in the world, people usually don't abandon their precious offspring because they're sick and small. Surprise: Toddlers and young children are GENERALLY small, weak and often sick. That's no reason to get rid of them. And the link in your description really doesn't go into detail about this either. In fact, it's treated like a throw-away note. "Berserkers were elite warriors who didn't wear traditional armour in battle" Again, very unlikely. I'm not saying that this didn't happen in some cases, but the more reasonable explanation is that they were, like the video mentioned, indeed veteran warriors - who were awarded a bear-coat for their prowess in battle (or what have you) - and that they wore it on TOP of their usual clothing and armour. Many people think that they weren't the blood-crazed battlefrenzied lunatics that the entertainment media likes to portray them as, but rather like "champions" that were awarded with special gear to show it... and that's really it.

Doctor Maxi also known as the fly agaric... I did muscimol once, can't imagine trying to fight on that stuff (or do anything really) I think it would be a real disadvantage in a battle, I think its a legend that they used it during war
@Giesela08157 жыл бұрын
Maybe they used it in a ritual before battle to get in "the right mood". As soon as the effects wore off or were controllable enough they would be blessed by the gods and ready to fight.
@jesperbonde5717 жыл бұрын
Thet didnt do the mushrooms themselves. They had slaves eat them and then pee. They would then drink the urine before battle to receive a reduced effect of the mushroom.

Berserkers were literally just lone wolves that wandered around challenging other men into 1v1s for their property. Nothing like the retarded hollywood version.
@Gumpmachine17 жыл бұрын
I Em Gote there are heaps of different theories about them. Your lone wolf is one, then there is they are a tribe, high on mushrooms and several others. I'm not sure which one is true, but a can make an educated guess according to the sagas, and nit the snorri ones. Lol
@laurensullivan15226 жыл бұрын
Antti The Internet Guy berserkers were left in the wild. They were given drugs and became inhuman(feral). They had no regard for human life because they had no loving touch. They could handle vast amounts of pain because they were essentially nuts.
@wickedcanadiangaming7616 жыл бұрын
Beserkers were practitioners of bloodlust or blood fury. It was actually something passed down in generations and not all Vikings could do it. It was a trance they entered normally mid combat that took away fear or pain and made them kill with brutal efficiency

You do know "Vikings" wore mail armor and plate helm. So doing whatever with their teeth to strike fear in to the enemy... Useless. Bleaching their hair... Useless. Using eyeliners... Useless. Their helmets covered their faces so much their teeth, hair, eyes were not seen. Berserkers used to eat magic mushshrooms before battle. Berserkers were not a fighting force. They were mainly used as hired killers and they were mostly criminals who had to be ready whenever to fight if someone would attack them for a bounty or revenge. Ivar the boneless. The most notorious viking ever to live. They say he was so tall he stood above everyone else. In the tv series Vikings he is the youngest son of Ragnar Lothbrok, and a cripple. The reality is he was the oldest son of Ragnar Lothbrok and not a cripple. Called "Boneless" because of his enormous size and strength. Breaking his enemies bones with single punching blows. About "Leaving children outside". Who cares? It was over 1000 years ago. They were pagans. Their religion did not value useless lives. So I don´t think it´s a weird thing to do at the time. The blood eagle on King Ale by Ivar the boneless. What a genius way his sick mind found ways to kill people. One thing few people know... The British Royal Family are Viking descents. Rollo a famous Viking who settled in "Normandy" had a grand-grand child. William the Conqueror. A French, North man(Viking) child. Conquered England and is responsible for the ruling monarchical dynasty which exists still today. So... First Ivar the boneless took over England. Then William the Conqueror finished the job. You could say the brits are as much a part of Scandinavia as Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Faroe Islands and Denmark. There is a reason why "Scottish" people have their red hairs and pagan-ish traditions. Big strong men. The English were bred out or bred in, either or both. So British people... Please stop talking so fkn weird and start acting like fkn Vikings. Like your forefathers! One more thing, in the television series Vikings. They show Vikings as these extremely ready to die people because a death in battle granted them their greatest wish. Getting in to Valhalla. It is untrue. The Vikings were brutal pagans who were fierce warriors. But they always used the "advantage". If they did not have greater numbers or battlefield advantage. They did not fight. So the myth that they did not fear death because of Valhalla is untrue. What makes "you" think "you" know it any better than us? Well, I was raised on this history. Taught from fifth to fourteenth(Fifth to tenth grade then four more years in secondary school. Pre College). These stories are part of my history, part of my education, part of me. Nice video though. Too bad about the helmets they used... Which both blocked sun, hid their teeth and hair. Making three of your claims completely useless. You should "Google", Authentic Viking Helmets.
@emptyforrest7 жыл бұрын
the teeth, hair and eyeliner parts most likely did actually occur to a decent extent. but not for the reasons stated in the video. vikings are known for being suprisingly hygenic and cared a fair bit about thier looks. so what mentioned in the video is very likely to be just cosmetic/fashion trends.
@Dyrlingur7 жыл бұрын
emptyforrest Hi. Could be. I have no memories of being taught about their hygene and so on. But that does not mean they did not do it. Our teachers might have skipped either learning it themselves or teaching it. Because we were mostly taught about their culture and famous Vikings. Like "Gunni á Hlíðarenda" Icelandic viking warrior who brutally faught and killed many vikings. More vikings propably died fighting each other than on foreign raids. Vikings were quick to adapt to the "new world". Even taking up Christianity for kingdoms. Making their followers take up Christianity to. Many Vikings settled in England and took up Christianity. Also the "Normandy" vikings of course. If they would have stayed "loyal" to their Valhalla believes. Norse Mythology would still exist today as a major religion. But because they converted so easily. Shows how little they were exited for Valhalla battlefield deaths. Tv show Vikings is a great show though. But to many characters and stories thrown in to a single lifetime.

Maybe the eyeliner was for use when they were on snow or sailing; at least that's what I thought. They probably wouldn't wear their helmets all the time, so that would work out.

Every culture since the dawn of man has had this difference. And you fucking say this shit. What did viking culture ever do to you?

If the blood eagle really existed somewhere else than in literature, the victim would actually faint from the pain long before the ribs would be cut, then the heart would have stop beating because of intense pain. It's a basic that anyone who torture people knows very well.

@pitpatify7 жыл бұрын
The stuff with the blood eagle is obviously at least blown up. You can sever the rips from the spine, but the pain would be tremendous and the victim would not hold still, so there would be a very good chance you kill him by opening one of the bigger blood vessels before the complicated operation is over. Assumed you would manage to avoid opening a blood vessel, as soon as you try to sever the ribs, you practically couldn't avoid to cut into the pleura, the very thin and sensitive skin that covers the lung's cavity, the lung will collapse and the victim will suffocate within a minute or so. Realistically, the victim would die when you remove the first rib, as the pleura is directly below the ribs. No point in rubbing salt into the wounds. All in all, you can cut a human open and pull his lungs out, it is a very cruel method to kill somebody, but he would be dead long before you actually have the lungs out.
