October is a fantastic time to be tripping in Ontario but every time I've done it there's definitely been a higher sense of "don't mess up," especially around moving water (and several days of snow.) It's interesting how apparent it is that you both became more comfortable with the swifts/rapids as you went on. Can't wait for part 3!

Great footage. I bet that if you hadn't mentioned the missing pfd, no one would have noticed! The whole "forgetting to switch the camera on" thing can be a real ball breaker. Its not like you can go back and do it again. The best footage I never got was on the Snake when we ran the main rapids and dumped. It would have been awesome 'cept I'd put the Go Pro on to photo mode.:-(

Again, a master at work. Question. Night 3. Was there a ledge in the river on that portage? Perhaps in your water level a fairly obvious stand wave? The weather conditions that you two encountered were a major challenge. I am impressed with how you maintained your sense of humor.

We heard the train in the distance on that last night in part two... we were close to rapids though so it drowned it out a bit. We heard a moose quite close to us than night as well... gave us a good jump as it mashed through the bush nearby.

So a beautiful experience - thanks for sharing! Where does one find and purchase that handy essentials such pocket that you have in front (attached to your vest?)? Thanks
@JasonIrwinTumblehome
@JasonIrwinTumblehome 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there. The little pouch on the front is actually part of the lifejacket. The lifejacket does have webbing on the front and back to add extra bits. For a while I was using an extra pouch on the back to carry some items but ultimately I wasn't happy with extra weight while paddling.

Awesome trip. What kind of insulation did you end up using under you in your hammock to prevent the frozen backside? What brand of hammock were you using?
@JasonIrwinTumblehome
@JasonIrwinTumblehome 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Brian, It's a Hennessy... Expedition Zip I believe. The light under quilt is made by OneTigris... Amazon find. With a few simple mods it works well with this hammock. For me it was good down to around 0 Celsius... the last couple nights were -2 and -5. The toes were not happy at -5 but rest of me was pretty good. I used to do the Thermarest program but find the quilt much better / easier.

Thanks Mike. It's a Hennessy zipper model and I have a light under quilt (OneTigris) that is good to about -1. 2nd last night it was -2 ish and the last night was -5 with a breeze all night. My toes were not impressed and I was awake every 1/2 hr trying to get warm. I used to use a Thermarest in there and it was good mainly because it doubled as my chair around camp. It was pain though... shifting around and chilly in the compressed areas. I do like the way the quilt works... just need a better one for sub zero.
@MikeProut

Tumblehome awesome! Very helpful. I made an underquilt out of an old sleeping bag but I think it will be good only down to -5 ish. Been using a neo air trekker otherwise. Cheers!

@JasonIrwinTumblehome 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Joe, It's a Hennesy something or other... Expedition Zip I think. I opted for the larger fly as it works as a big tarp... if you go with Hennessy, get the snakeskins too... lets you " put away" the hammock even while set up so you can chill under the tarp in bad weather. The skins also keep the hammock dry when setting up in the wet. Lots of good hammocks out there now though... try them all!
