I was born and raised in Munich, Germany but have been living in Cincinnati, Ohio off and on since 2016. the yolk color differs depending on what you feed your chickens. if you raise your own and feed them a more natural diet of both commercial feeds and insects the yolk will be brighter and a different color then store bought eggs. and yes the american feed is different then feeds in other countries and so the yolk is different colors because of that.

My father was in the US Air Force. We were stationed in Germany twice. The first time there, we lived in Ramstein village just outside Ramstein Air Base and I rode the bus to school on base. One afternoon, walking home from the bus stop, I passed by a house with two German women standing in the yard talking. One of them said something and the other lady laughed. It shocked me. I got home and told my father that they laughed in English. They didn't sound like us when they talked, so I didn't expect that they would sound like us when they laughed. This was quite a revelation for a seven-year-old. We lived in Germany for a total of seven years. The second time we were there, I was in 11th and 12th grade. I loved living in Germany and have come to the conclusion that I will not live long enough to spend all the time there that I want.

That is exactly why because milk is only sold in the US and coke everywhere. Coke doesn't need to make special US bottles because we're smart enough to figure out how much it is. If coke sold half gallon containers, germans wouldn't know how much it was even if they were holding it in their had and they wouldn't buy it. Hell, they have Mark's on beer glasses to show how much it is down to 0.2 liters. Tiny, little itty bitty beers. I was surprised by that. In America, we just fill the glass.

It comes from the earlier days when bartender cheated and didnt fill the amount that was on the pricetable and wie have way bigger glasses for beer then just the .2l

@@Amarandwolf yeah, I understand the concept. An American can just look at a glass and see if he got a full beer. I'm sure it arose from bìťçhý Germans squawking because the glass wasn't filled to the exact rim or crowning over with surface tension. Americans are smart enough to just get a pint and know if it is a good pour or not. The Brits can do this too. Germans have been getting 0.2, 0.5 etc. Liters of beer their entire lives. They should just know what it looks like.

Texting isn't free. Matter of fact, it's the most overpriced thing being sold. The problem is phone companies gouge you on text messages basically requiring you to pay an additional $15/mo or whatever for unlimited texts. If you somehow to manage to opt out of a text plan, you get ripped off when others text you (intentional or spam) on a per text basis. So most people just pay for the unlimited texting, whether they use it or not.

We have 4 phones, with unlimited data, text and calls all Android $200 a month on Verizon. I use 80-100gb of data per month. I never connect to WiFi even at home.

I lived in Spain as a German for several years and was quite surprised when I applied for my TV connection that I could also get a cell phone with a corresponding Spanish phone number for free. When I asked how many gigabytes I could use per month, the saleswoman was amazed. Because in Spain there is no limit to the monthly data consumption like in Germany!

_"I never thought a discussion about paper format could be so entertaining."_ I did, but probably only because I'm a nerd. 🤓 The A-series formats are vastly superior to the North American mishmash of inconsistent paper sizes. The A-series is a coherent series of paper sizes based on a basic paper size of one square meter, from which all other other sizes are derived. So A0 ("A zero") is one square meter, A1 is half a square meter, A2 is a quarter of a square meter, and so on. The key is that the ratio of the length to the width is based on the square root of 2, so that when you fold a piece of A-series paper widthwise, _the ratio of length to width (the aspect ratio) remains the same._ That's pretty cool, and it allows you to do things like cut the size of an image in half so you can put two images on the same original piece of paper while maintaining the same proportionality of everything. It all just fits. It's a shame we can't have that here in America, but it's not surprising, given how widespread and longstanding the use of our own standard sizes are, and how difficult it would be to change at this point. (Kinda like adopting the metric system, but harder.)

@@Milesco When she held up that piece of paper, I felt that it was...too tall. Almost comically tall. I feel like if I were to put that on a table it would be a pain to reach the other end. That being said, having a consistent ratio would probably be cool to have. I think it's worth losing the ability to have a cut in half be an identical ratio to have a shorter fatter paper. Although, Europeans have gotten along fine, so it may just be a preference thing The 2 hole punchers, on an unrelated note, as she showed, really bug me as a concept. How are you supposed to get all of the paper perfectly aligned if you don't secure it in the hole puncher?

#5 The A paper size system is just genius: - A0 has an area of 1 m² and a side length ratio of 1 : √2 - A1 is A0 cut in half, the side length ratio is preserved. - A2 is A1 cut in half, the side length ratio is preserved. - and so on. Simple and genius, I love it. :)

I really love how Germany recycles everything, and it is so convenient to take your bottles to recycle containers in your village. I was there for four years and really loved the differences. It makes so much sense to recycle and not just throw into the trash which is then buried in landfills. What a mess!

Thank you for a great video. Living in Canada but growing up in Israel, a country that is European-like in many aspects (banking, metric system, mobile and more), I'm aware of the differences, and you presented them so clearly and pleasantly. I'd like to add that the standard paper system maintains the proportions in an interesting way: when moving a level bigger (e.g. A4 to A3), the length of the small size (A4) becomes the width of the large size (A3), and the width of the small size is doubled. It's like putting two A4s side by side. While the A-system is the most popular (e.g. A3 for technical drawings), there is also a lesser-used B-system (B4, B3, etc.) and even a C-system, and they are all metric and all follow the same logic. Regarding eggs: another difference is that eggs in the US (and Canada) are refrigerated, whereas in Europe they are not. The reason for this is that eggs in North America are cleaned with a harsh detergent for sanitary purposes and possibly because of consumer preferences, and that damages the shell, so without refrigeration there is a risk of bacteria contamination. milliliters Regarding phones: I don't understand why people would use a service that excludes 60% of users (80% if you look at the worldwide market) when there are many non-exclusive. Nevertheless, I live in Canada, where there are ~30% iPhones, and I don't feel affected by not having iMessage, so I would not consider using an iPhone, which to me is a downgrade from Android. But that's me (iPhone lovers out there, let's not start a debate on this). You forgot to mention the weird and confusing date format they use in the US (MM/DD) instead of the standard DD/MM, and that they don't use 24-hour time, like almost everyone else in the world. This is even worse in Canada: they use both here, probably due to a US influence.

When I lived in France, I didn’t expect having to make an appointment at a bank to open an account. In the US, you can just walk into any bank and open one on the spot. I was also shocked that my checking account had a monthly fee. Not only is my American checking account free, but I earn 1.5% interest and get reimbursed for ATM fees.

The janitor at the school I work at has his own chickens and he gave some eggs to some of the teachers and other staff. One teacher he gave them two was unaware that could be a great difference in the color of an egg yolk said that he gave her bad eggs.

Regarding the “floors” in Hong Kong, we used to have a very confusing way of numbering the floors differently in Chinese (same as the US by counting 1st floor from the ground) and in English (same as what you say about Germany that the floor on the ground is called the “Ground Floor” and the floor above it being the 1st floor). So I used to live in an apartment which was on the “8th floor” if written in Chinese and “7th floor” if written in English. Very confusing. Some older buildings are still like this, but new buildings started to use the English floor numbering system only.

When I was a young man, I served in the US Army in Hesse on the Inter-German Border. It was a real eye-opening experience for me too. I think that it made me a better human and a better citizen to see how another people live, both the good of it and the bad. The first real love of my life was a German girl... your personality reminds me of her quite a bit... and that was also a real education. The US is weird for recycling, it really depends where you live how good the system is.

All trash is sorted at city dump sites. People are hired to sort out the recyclables, so jobs, and the city gets revenue from the materials. I've never been in a home in the US that didn't have a bin for garbage and a bin for recyclables, so recyclables are not thrown away carelessly, the recycle value is just given to the city - mostly out of laziness rather than altruism, but that's ok. Most people in the US get angry when they see recyclables (or ANY trash) being tossed out of car windows, or left on a beach or in a park, or whatever. Happens too often.

In my town it's basically non existant. Where I grew up, it was half decent and you could actually get fined for not recycling. Where I live now? Before they basically just abolished it all together, people had to pay each month to use it unless they had a designated bin outside that someone else paid for the neighborhood to use. Inevitably, some idiot would throw trash that could not be recycled in there meaning a the recycled contents would just end up in the landfill anyway. In a college town I lived in for a while, not recycling was unheard of. Plastics went into 1 bin, and compost (food bits and some paper) went into another. The normal recyclables ended up getting remade into milk cartons and the like. The compost was turned into fertilizer for the local farms. In 2011, that college only got something like 15% of its electricity and heat from non renewable sources as well. You would have known it though unless someone told you. The electricity the dryer's used (laundry) mostly came from wind turbines. That's the best I have come across for everything green (including recycling) and I wish more places could do it.

There’s no such thing as “free text data.” We (in the US) pay for “unlimited text” by default. This is part of the reason our cell phone plans are much more expensive when compared internationally. You just have more of a choice in Europe. You can pay for unlimited data there too, but why would anyone do that on purpose? Not even iMessages count against a data plan bc it uses data instead.

@@denizwesley3227 Depends on the company. My current plan is unlimited talk and text for $35/month. That also includes 10GB/month of LTE data and unlimited 3G data after that (which of course is a lot since most data is just used over WiFi and doesn't count towards that limit -- AND streaming music doesn't count towards the limit, either, even when used over the 4G network.) Super cheap. (That's $35/month total, not extra on top of anything.)

@@IceMetalPunk $35 is good, and it is that low bc you’re limited to 10GB LTE (which absolutely suffices for most). However, even $35 is relatively high compared to a 10GB plan in Europe-on average, anyway. Either way, kudos to you for only paying for what you actually need! I truly applaude that!

Hi. I’m Rob from New Jersey. I enjoy watching your videos because I’m interested in the sociological/ psychological perspectives that you relate. I particularly like your videos because you express yourself extremely well, you have a very pleasant personality, and your appearance is quite attractive. I would like to offer that from my own experience, I noticed that in Europe, cafes etc. will give you a limited amount of condiments or napkins. Whereas in the US, one can just grab everything if he or she chooses. I personally am very conservative in this regard, and, while this did not surprise me, it did impress me as an obvious difference.

I live in Michigan, started using WhatsApp when I started learning Spanish a few years ago and started talking to people in Spanish speaking countries. I prefer it over any other messaging apps. What a fun video 😁. Just FYI, I raise chickens... the difference in yolk color has everything to do with how much variety and nutrition the chicken gets. The darker the yolk, the more variety and nutrition the chicken is getting, the lighter the yolk the less variety and nutrition the chicken gets. Interestingly, many Americans (I am one) are often weirded out by a very dark yolk. People in the US are so far removed from their food sources that most have no idea about the differences in yolk color... so if they happen to get eggs from a small farmer who does gives their chickens lots of variety and high nutrition food, and a dark yolk, they think there is something wrong with it.

Speaking of encryption, there are other, better options than WhatsApp (Signal and Telegram both come to mind) but the problem is that, no matter what kind of encrypted communication service you're talking about (for messaging, email, etc.) none of them are interoperable, so unless everyone you know picks the same system, there's no point, really. That and, honestly, most Americans even at this point aren't really well informed enough or honestly give a s*** enough to bother with encryption, so at the end of the day the security aspect of all of this is utterly irrelevant amongst Americans in general.

In the U.S. paper is 17" X 22". Cut in half to 8 1/2"X 11" is ledge size while letter size is a sheet cut into fourths. Hence 20# paper is only 5# when cut down cut down to letter size. Three ring binders are so one can stagger pages up or down. Accounting you can flag accounts by moving the bottom hole to the center ring with the middle one landing on the top. Accounts paid monthly or with a positive balance are shifted down.

JoAnne Middaugh what do you mean by „conflated“? In germany it‘s basically all parts of the same ONE recycling system nationwide. One part is the deposit system for aluminum beverage cans, recycable PET plastic bottles and beverage glass bottles (mostly water, beer and soda) And then for ALL the other glass that doesn‘t fall under the deposit system (jars, wine bottles, etc.) - you collect it and then bring it to your next container station (which most are in walking distance in cities - germany is a lot denser populated therefore no big deal) On that note - we also recycle a lot of paper. Every house or appartment complex in larger cities has to have at least one garbage can/container for residual waste and one for paper waste. In smaller cities, villages or local communities they go even further most of the time. They have to have multiple extra garbage cans for plastics (packaging, etc.), tin plate (food cans), compost (food leftovers, etc.) Germans almost religiously seperate their trash as it’s required... Now.... how much of that deposit and non deposit plastics really gets recycled... that‘s a whole 'nother story 😒

I lived in Michigan my whole life where they have bottle deposit. When I moved to Florida in my 30's, it was very odd for me to throw out cans and bottles too. As far as the egg yolk color goes, I have noticed that there is a huge difference in yolk color between cheap eggs and organic or free range. The organic and/or free range are always a much more vibrant orange.

Most of the North Eastern US has a Deposit system for cans and bottles. In Virginia and the Carolinas recycling is taking hold. Most rural families have no garbage collection available and there are State operated Collection Centers where you can deposit your separated clear, brown & green glass along with aluminum cans and plastic bottles. The remaining receptacles were for electronics, heavy household metals & wood and of course the remaining household trash. Many are set up to receive refuse paint, used Motor Oil and other Petroleum products. Some of them will also have an open but covered area to leave anything too good to throw away. Once I lucked out while I was there dropping family trash with my little Ranger pickup. A gentleman showed up in a station wagon and was leaving a pile of very nice looking Oriental Rugs. I took all five of them home vacuumed them and put them to use. They were very clean and in very good condition. I still have them today and that was more than 20 years ago.

CA has a deposit system for glass cans and most plastic containers. However, most Americans put them in the recycle bin. Back in the '30's when a 10 oz bottle of Coke was 5 cents, the deposit was 2 cents. That's 40%!. I'm from the US, but lived in Germany for five years as a kid, from 1986-1991, and during that time, I somehow managed to never realize the thing about the first floor being called the ground floor there. Also, thanks for the clarification of the WhatsApp thing. I've stayed in contact with a buddy of mine from back then, and he has mentioned to me about us communicating through WhatsApp a few times - and I had no idea what he was talking about when he first mentioned it. I did put the app on my phone for it, but, it still hasn't made much sense to me. Until I saw this video. Now I know why they are all about it over there when nobody uses it here. And I know to put more emoticons in my normal text to them - which I generally hate doing when I write. Thanks so much for teaching me something new. I still miss your home country. @@BryTee It's not a "con". For it to be a con, it would have to be something that people don't expect. Nobody who's lived here a while doesn't know that sales tax is added on to the price. The other thing is that it's a function of a decentralized government. The tax needs of Maine are different than the needs of Georgia or California, so having the same tax rate wouldn't make sense. And then, within a state, counties, and cities can also assess an additional sales tax. I checked one time-there are something like 200 different sales tax rates just in California. You buy something in the city where I live, and you pay the state rate, an extra 1/2 cent that the county assessed for some badly needed road work in the rural parts of the county, and 1/4 cent in the city, which also goes toward road improvement. Go five miles south, and you're in a different city that doesn't have the city tax. Go 20 miles west, and you're in a city in another county where the rate is different. Can you imagine the hassle of owning a store (even a mom and pop) and having to change the prices on every single item when the tax rate changed? And what about stores that have locations in different cities-now you've doubled the amount of work. Done the way it is, if the rate changes, they just need to put the new rate in the register.

Many years ago u. Cincinnati used a floor numbering system with the lowest ground floor (Crosley) as 1. Interconnected buildings followed that plan so that the ground floor of a building a mile away and “up the hill” might be 6. Took some getting used to.

I really have enjoyed your videos though I have only watched a few. I always find it interesting to look at these sort of cultural differences. I didn’t see anyone comment on why the USA and the Americas have never bought into the ISO paper sizes. As you may know these were originally the DIN system adopted the Germany after WW I. The system got a big boost when the USSR adopted DIN sizes in 1934 in an attempt to do trade deal with Germany. WW II effectively forced the system on much of the rest of Europe. The USSR imposed it on the whole Eastern Block and in much of the west kept it after occupation. In the Americas there were many many more paper sizes until the well after mid 20th century. The standardization on 8 1/2 x 11 (or 14) did not occur until well into the 1970s time frame when Xerox and computer printing became common. There was a push to adopt the ISO standards and metric measurements. Ironically, computerization killed it. The big advantage of metric-easy computation and conversion-was largely eliminated by computerized calculating and the installed base of letter/legal paper processing was just too expensive to change. I agree the ISO system makes more sense for paper sizes.

I don't mind German checkout at all. It's mostly still what my brain is used to, though I do miss the grocery baggers. What confuses me is the self-checkout that's becoming more and more common in the U.S. I always mess up somewhere, and have to ask for help.

Now that was a really exciting video about "every day" differences that do have a lot of impact. I was aware of most of what you discussed but not of the different habits of "texting" when communicating to all of your friends. I'm living in Munich, Germany and every time I want do some chatting in the evening I'll have to fire up a lot of apps: Signal for my political minded friends (because it's supposed to be very safe and "data protective"), Telegram for those who want more convenience without succumbing to big companies, WhatsApp for the bulk of "regular" people like family, colleagues etc., FB messenger for everyone I'm connected with on FB only (without having their phone number). Old school text messages ("SMS") are by now only being used here when there's no internet connection. Many commented on using KZbin chat as something similar but I didn't quite get that - for me that's communicating with people you usually have no personal contact with. I'm not using Threema, Viber, or Line yet but having many contacts all over the world through couchsurfing I somehow see that coming for me... Checking so many channels every day is not really convenient but quite naturally people are very different and so is their preferred way of communicating - I like that there's choice about this very essential thing. iMessage is competely off my planet because I don't have an iPhone but that was never a problem here. On a side note: more or less all US American guests I hosted preferred to communicate through Whatsapp so it seems like folks are well-prepared when travelling to Europe ;-)

We used to return our soda bottles for deposit and re-use in the US but that was back when soda came in thick glass bottles. When I was a kid the largest coke you could buy was a 1 quart bottle but the most common were 16 ounce bottles that came in a carton of 8. The plastic bottles started replacing them in the late 1970's here and at that time the only "recyclable" part was the bottom of the plastic bottle as it came with a separate piece that you could remove and use as a small flower pot, lol. Today's society is all about everything being disposable. When I was a kid, everything was either re-usable or easy to repair. Take electronics for instance, if your tv or radio went wonky chances are it was either a tube, a capacitor or resistor that needed replacing and they were cheap. Shoes could be re-soled. Clothes were passed down. A common motto in the U.S. was "Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without".

And in New York recycling is the law for things that can not be returned to get our nickels back but the legistlature decided to leave it up to the counties to enforce it - which most counties simply make it so recycling has to be available for residents but residents do not have to do it.

I'm Australian, where we number the floors in our buildings the same as you do in Germany. When I moved to China to live in 2013, I discovered they use the floor numbering system the same as that used in the USA. I found that really difficult to get used to for a while. I lived there for 6 years, so when I came back to Australia I had to get used to their system all over again.

Considering the part with the numbering of building floor. If you have a trip to the eastern part of Germany get surprised by floor number 1 meaning ground level in stead of first level after basement.

When I lived in Germany I had to get used to the different numbering system for levels too. I knew about it before I moved there, but it still takes some time to allow your brain to adjust to the difference. If you really want a lightweight binder hole punch(in the US), you can get them. You'd probably have to check Dollar Tree, Walmart &/or Target to find one. They're not too difficult to find toward the end of the summer, when there are so many back to school items in the stores.

The two major paper sheet sizing systems were developed by bureaucrats... the two schools of thought each had their own reasoning in how things developed. The US uses ANSI paper sizes which double as you go up the scale. These are also the standard sizes for engineering drawings. A = 8.5" x 11" = letter size paper, and came out of the old US government 8" x 10" standard sheet, with paper added to provide convenient margins. B = 11" x 17" = Ledger size or Tabloid from two of the more common uses of pages in this format C = 17" x 22" D = 22" x 34" E = 34" x 44" It is a mathematically Rational system, and makes it easy to fold the paper into convenient sizes for filing and mailing. Almost anyone can be quickly trained to fold things in half after all... The ISO paper sizes used in much of the rest of the world are also used for engineering drawings, and are based on breaking things down from a square meter sheet of paper in halves with an aspect ratio of the square root of 2, rounded off to the nearest whole millimeter. It's a system that was derived by a geometer with Obsessive, Compulsive Disorder. A0 = 1 m2 = 1189 x 841 A1 = 1/2 m2 = 594 x 841 A2 = 1/4 m2 = 420 x 594 A3 = 1/8 m2 = 297 x 420 A4 = 1/16 m2 = 210 x 297 As an engineer trained in the US, I find the proper technique for folding drawings on ISO sized paper to be entirely arcane, unnecessarily complex, and all too easy to forget. I would say that it is a system that only a German engineer could love, except that I seem to recall that it was actually a French mathematician who came up with it... When I was a young boy, the Canadians tried to convert to using ISO paper sizes, but they eventually gave it up for a bad job and went back to using ANSI sizes. In terms of designing filing cabinets and the like, (something that we need much, much less of these days, but it will never completely go away), it is actually more convenient to work with ANSI paper sizes. Other than that, the analogies between the sizes in the two systems are close enough to only be slightly disconcerting.

Specifically, non GMO or organic good will leave your yolks with a natural orange color. The steroids and preservatives in regular chicken layer cause the yolks to be more yellow.

When it comes naming floors in a building there can be many factors to consider. For instance, if a building has two entrances and is on a hill or sloping ground, the street level entrance would be the 2nd Floor, while the entrance on the lower end of the building would have the ground floor entrance in this example. Ground floor and first are often interchangeable. How about this. in a very large building such as a major hospital, on the elevator directory panel you will see “L” or “Lobby” indicating the ground floor. So there you go! 😉

You didn't mention that there are actually 2 binder systems in the US: 2 ring and 3 ring. I remember when I was in grade school and we were always wondering if this year would be 2 or 3 rings asked for. It became such a pain all the way around that most paper comes with 5 holes so it can go in either one. I still have some binders and some have 2 hole and some have 3! What more, even our 2 hole binders are a different size than the german 2 hole binders, so they are still incompatible :)

When I was away for work for a few months, me and my ex fiance tried just about every app and way of communicating, they would inevitably crash and we'd just video call through our phones. I'm not old or young(33) and this was just two years ago. Why use a third party app that even tells you it'll access your mic and camera? Think thats just when you use it?

Some states (CA and OR for example) do have a bottle return program that pays 5 or 10 cents. This is usually handled at grocery stores. Recycling is also a thing in some states. Some towns/cities have locations you can take stuff, some places collect it from the curbside along with the garbage. In Portland OR (where I live) we have separate bins for garbage, recycling, compost, and glass for weekly curbside collection.

The "Pfand" system was actually implemented to support the "Mehrwegflaschen" system which uses thicker, cleanable and then reusable glass or plastic bottles, which is even more environmentally friendly. But I feel nowadays the thin one use bottles with Pfand are even more popular then the Mehrweg-bottles than before the system was implemented. Guess we germans don't care that much to carry the heavier bottles around. Anyways, I rather drink tap-water and use a "Sodastream" to fulfill my sparking needs from time to time with some sugar free syrup for the taste. That's the even better option imo.

Years ago (I am nearly 60) all of our soda and milk came in glass bottles which were returned for a deposit, cleaned and reused. I lived in Iowa for a year and they had a system similar to yours, but in 1981 it was not automated yet. A clerk at the store would count the bottles and give you back your refund. My biggest surprise in Europe (I spent a bit of time in Prague and only visited Dresden, Germany for a day) was the lack of free public restrooms. I think I mad a lady a bit angry when I started to leave without paying. I really didn't know.

When my wife and I moved to Belgium in 1998, we found out that no one ever there used checks anymore. Or if they did, it was very rare. That’s because checks in Europe are much more like an American Cashiers Check, in which the money is taken out immediately, you can’t cancel them, and you can’t reverse the charge. We used the electronic payment kiosk at the bank branch to pay all our bills, until the bank delivered their home software version that allowed us to do that without visiting the branch. Europe also had chipped credit cards for security back in the early “aughts”, like 2002 or so. We still don’t have full penetration of chipped cards here in the US. Some people still insist on the mag stripe. At least we finally got away from those damn manual card machines which required the raised printing on the credit card, but even now plenty of cards still have the raised printing anyway.

Cheques disappeared in Australia last century - at least in common usage. I don't think I have used plastic legal tender for years. Everything is electronic. Even using a tap off credit card is being replaced by phone apps for even the most minor purchases. Getting paper bills is weird. For an otherwise advanced country the US is incredibly backward.

I'm American and I rarely go to the bank and rarely write checks. I pay my rent to my landlord through my banking app. Check Cashing places are for people that are so low-income, they cannot maintain a minimum balance, or they don't have a direct deposit, or they owe a bank money and cannot open a new account elsewhere (banks are able to track that through an internal system). This is why you are likely to find Check Cashing places in low-income neighborhoods. We definitely have bottle/can redemption centers in the U.S., I have them in Massachusetts and have seen them in Michigan as well.

Things that surprised me living in Germany (this was quite a while ago while stationed there with the army, do not know if still current): - Beer was delivered by a truck that looked like a buckboard wagon. Local beer (not pasteurized, drink it within three months or toss it) was delivered in large trays that held about 20(?) bottles. On a weekly basis, empty trays were left outside, and fresh trays were deposited. - Popcorn is generally seasoned with sugar, not salt or butter. You need to ask for salt. - Trash pick-up consisted of a small container, perhaps the size of a Rubbermaid container, but about half the diameter, steel, with a locking lid. It had a license on the lid that showed the fee was paid. Most families put one out on the curb per week. Where did all the other trash go? There wasn't much, because food was purchased fresh from local markets almost every day (the baker, the butcher, the vegetable market) and when consumed there is no trash. Boxes and other packaging were minimal. - Car washes are an obsession. You can see long lines at a car wash. - Keeping streets and sidewalks clean are an obsession. On New Year's Eve, at the stroke of midnight, chaos ensues, with fireworks and flare guns absolutely everywhere. By sunrise there isn't a scrap of paper to be found anywhere, as if it never happened. - Apartments are bare-bones. The kitchen has no stove or refrigerator, and there are no lights, just wires hanging from the ceiling. Most people re-paper their walls when they move in. - Dogs must go to training school. You can see owners walk down a sidewalk, tell the dog to sit and wait outside if they enter a shop, and the dog will be there when the owner comes out. They must heel when following their master and not wander around or bother others nearby. This was not a small town, it was Ludwigsburg, a well-known city just outside of Stuttgart.

dog training school ist not a duty, in some few towns you need a "dog licensense" if you have a pitbull or other "dangerous dog breeds" but in germany everybody can have a dog without dog school, it more like a hobby to train the dogs good Car washes: it is forbidden in germany to wash the car at home, only inside cleaning, but not with water from outside. (+ the peole near stuttgart love cars because porsche,mercedes benz,audi factory are there)

The SMS name was rarely called that in the US as we just called it text messages. I bet you only 1 out of 100 Americans would even know what is SMS. Plus we had free text messaging for a really long time even before smartphones came about so there was no need for apps like whatsapp. Also consider that a lot of us don’t have to send messages internationally because the US is so big and friends and family live within the USA. Hopefully that answers your question about why we use “SMS” instead of WhatsApp.

SMS AKA Short Messaging Service is based on telegrams/radiograms. Many of the abbreviations and formats are based from the Morse Code days. Generally telegrams/radiograms are limited 25 words. SMS is limited to 160 characters, five characters per word would be 32 words. Trivia: Stop is short "Full Stop" in British English for a period. In Sir Charles Wheatland's automatic Morse Code reader the dial pointed to stop for period.

I know this comment is 2 years old but just in case you read this reply: did text messaging allow for group messaging in the U.S. before smartphones came about as well? I'm French but like in Germany, here in France we mostly use WhatsApp (or Telegram or others messaging apps) instead of SMS (also called that in France). And at least for me, the major improvement that WhatsApp brought to messaging is group messaging, that's why I started using it in the first place, much more than for international messaging or calls (although it is very handy for that too, because A. I have siblings living abroad for 15 years now and B. France is "small" so that's easy to go abroad for like a week or even a week-end, I mean by train it takes less than 5 hours to go to Germany, Belgium, the U.K., Spain, Italy...)
