Hi Emma, I’m in Canada ( originally from Scotland) and am a 70 year old lady who loves fashion. I’ve been following you for about 4 months. I’m an Aries and understand and enjoy your energy. I used to be a big clothes shopper and later in life... much later, I learned all your lessons. Great channel! Stay safe.

I too am a woman in my 70s and live i Anchorage, Alaska. I retired i 2011 and have since had some time in the last 2 years watching fashion influencers such as yourself. I wish I knew then what I know now regarding fashion and purchasing classic pieces. I am only now moving away from trend pieces and am culling my wardrobe. When you get to my age your instinct is to make life simpler and having a smaller yet functional wardrobe makes life easy. I live in a little colder climate than yours, but I found your dressing and layering for colder climates very helpful. I grew up in Hawaii so I’ve had a continuing lesson of how to dress for colder weather. I just started watching your channel a few days ago and thankfully have a lot of you tube videos to catch up on. Very much appreciate your channel. You’re never too old to learn!

I live in one of the wealthiest counties in the US (I’m poor, but wasn’t always), and none of the local charities accept clothing donations because there is such a glut of cheap unwanted clothes here. So, this has really affected how I choose items, knowing that they will likely end up in the trash (unfortunately, my go-to for garment recycling, my local H&M shop, has suspended their program because of COVID-19, then had to shut down, no interior malls can open here yet). My lessons I would add, from a mature women’s perspective, are: 1. don’t buy clothes, shoes, accessories, etc. on credit, always pay cash; 2. spend more on basics, that is the less memorable items, you’re more likely to get good cost-per-wear on a neutral silk silk than a trendy, patterned and colorful dress , for example; and 3. when buying basics, update them a little each time, for example, instead of buying more plain crew neck t-shirts this year I incorporated a new trend in each one, e.g., a new color, a square neck, ribbing, elbow length or slight puffed sleeve, shoulder pads (small!) or polo collar, etc. That way, your look always stays up-to-date. Invest in updated, but not-too-trendy styled, comfortable, good-quality shoes, belts, bags, silk/cashmere/merino wool scarves, classic jewelry and jackets/coats. Go cheaper on the rest of your garments, the more trendy or memorable the style, the less you should pay, because these items date fast.

Would love to see a detailed how-to of how to sell clothes on line. From sorting to choosing what should be sold and where (and why), through the workflow of posting them from prep of the items, inspecting, photos, description, disclaimers, pricing, shipping & packaging. Especially for the average person without the ready audience to purchase your items. How to actually get them sold?! That would be really helpful to hear how so,done with experience does the whole process. Thanks so much! Kiss the pups! 👍😉

Hi Emma, I’m a new viewer, just subscribed, 60 years old from San Francisco, viewing this video in September 2020. As a mature woman, I think your Style Lessons Learned are great, every young woman should take them on board. I follow all these guidelines myself, but haven’t been able to break my shopping addiction! I’m working on it, but a big weight loss last year, and a deliberate style change once I turned 60 in this year have complicated my efforts to reduce buying and streamline my wardrobe. I’m altering every quality, still-loved garment that I can, but 2-3 sizes is just too big of a difference, so I’ve just had to buy a lot of new basics, cheaper this time around, because of new economic reality. Keep up your great videos, I love your real-person, straightforward, down-to-earth style.

I absolutely loved this video! I am the same age as you. I have been living with my boyfriend of 14 for almost 5 years now and I have recently (over the past 4-5 years) rediscovered my style. I am a denim and shirt, T-shirt or jumper, depending on the season, type of girl. I also love scarves! I have grown a love for cashmere, thanks to your addiction to it! I had to really downsize my clothes when I moved in with my boyfriend. So did he, to be honest. What I have learned over the years is to invest in timeless pieces, just like you always suggest. They never go out of style and they are easy to combine to create new outfits. I also tend to buy more quality pieces, that will last longer and will wear nicely, instead of cheaper items which look like trash after a few washes. I have destroyed my feet with cheap shoes and I am now investing in comfortable and quality shoes, without sacrificing style. I pretty much follow every single one of your suggestions, except for the "sell to buy new", which i have never thought. One rule I always follow before buying anything new is that I have to be able to create at least 3-5 outfits with this piece and the clothes I already own. This has saved me a lot of money and it has helped me create a wardrobe where most of my pieces match. Thank you for your great content! Keep up with the good work and keep safe. Greetings from quarantined Athens, Greece.

Good morning, Emma & editing Simon. I'd like to suggest 1 thing: a bra fitting. As I'm older than you, I didn't care what I wore during my early 20s as I was pregnant and gained 90 lbs w/my 1st child, never lost it. Until recently, I've been "plus" size since 1995. Currently, I'm a US 6 or a M. I feel better and I follow people that are into the "capsule" wardrobe. I agree, quality over quantity. Thank-you for sharing what you've learned over the year's. ❤
@pamelaatkinsonscats28734 жыл бұрын
Totally agree with re-wearing things. I've mostly stopped buying new things. I now look (or looked) in charity shops and get a lot more wear out of things I already have. The weather's nice here in Scotland so that's uplifting. Can't help but feel anxious, but your videos are helping me. I always enjoy seeing your dogs.

Also accessories/jewellery that actually lasts! I’ve bought way too many cheap metal/plastic jewellery that broke after a few wears, or simply lost its colour/rusted, even though they may look really good at the beginning. Now I always look for gold coated, stainless steel or sterling silver jewellery, even though they can more pricey, they’re definitely a good investment.

Emma and Simon thank you for this! To me it was one of your best fashion-related videos. Emma was funny but at the same time serious, and very caring, humble and honest, and realistic, inspiring as a good role model, and very wise. And as always the editing was perfect :) Be well, stay home and safe! Best wishes from Greece where we are confined too, and ok with it! Not easy but it is a privilege, even a luxury when we think of all those who bravely go out every day putting their lives at risk just to take care of other people (medical staff, public drivers, chemists, supermarket staff and many others) - of us who can stay at home. It is our civic duty to do so.

I am 47 and I agree with all of your lessons. I was also lost in trends when I was younger. I think when your younger,unless you’ve had a fashionable mentor to help teach you? It’s difficult to know your style. Investing in quality items and ensuring you have the basics covered in your wardrobe is the best thing we can do. Also, knowing your style uniform so that you don’t end up with lovely items you’ll never wear is another thing.

I feel attacked! This was so me in my 20's 😂 Thanks so much Emma & Simon for still keeping us entertained. I'm a baker so still working full-time for the foreseeable but I'm still watching in my downtime. I would add that "investing" doesn't have to mean spending extra coin. I "invested" in some expensive leather trainers and they're squeaky as hell and actually a real regret. Some of my BEST PURCHASES have been thrift/pre-loved finds, like my Vince Camuto heels. Not to be gross or anything but I feel like used shoes have a certain "lived in" comfort 😂 I can also add (making this comment SUPER LONG😂) that as a volunteer at a charity, we have stock, we need your QUALITY donations. Not your thread bare battered clothing. We don't refuse any donations either so quality is definitely preferable over quantity 😍

Big virtual hug to you all as well 💞 Not feeling good, kinda bad cold chest cold feeling. Could be allergies.. Emma I think you are an old soul. You are mature definitely beyond your age. You have such wonderful careful insights on so many issues. You have definitely "reopened" my eyes to so many issues. This video was a good wake-up call especially in light of recent global events. If anyone thinks that this pandemic is not going to have an extreme effect on our previous robust economy, they are fooling themselves. We need to get back to basics and dump overindulgence. I think this outbreak will serve as a wake-up call hopefully. I follow a couple of other people on KZbin and there are a few that take Branding to an extreme. I realize showing new fashion beauty home etc is their job but you can do it in a way that is classy and to not overdo it. I've now unsubscribed to a couple of those individuals. Their approach is not only an excess amount of "highstreet" stuff, it's an excessive amount a premium and designer as well. I know people have to make money but as an "influencer" they need to be more mindful about content they put out because there will always be people desperate enough to just grab everything they're putting out there. I think they know that. One way you can decode this behavior is when the majority of the content that is put out is ad and in some cases it's paid and not revealed. Thank you for putting out quality content and being true to yourself. Stay well 😇🙏🧸. See you soon.💖

Im glad you talked about shoes. " Properly fitting" means you would not buy any kind of 'conventional ' shoes...our current shoes are not shaped for our actual feet let alone how they function. I had a couch dropped on one foot and I broke my toes on the other foot. I also have a small bunion starting. ( I'm only 49). All those pointy, fashion shoes and just every regular shoe, have taken their toll already. To help my feet heal and so I could walk for exercise again I did a lot of research and I came across 'correct toes' and the barefoot, minimal shoe information. It just made sense to me. Now when I see heels, or any 'conventionally ' pointy or narrow/ tapered shoe box ( basically all shoes) to me it looks like a foot deforming device and to me it is not a 'shoe or footwear' at all. All 'conventional ' shoes ( runners included) are the North American/ European version of the Chinese foot binding. This January I purchased my first pair of minimal/ zero drop/ 'barefoot' boots and this spring I bought two new spring shoes...I will never go back to 'conventional ' shoes. These three pieces of footwear are all I wear. I buy the brand Vivobarefoot . For information on what natural/ healthy/ 'barefoot' footwear actually is and why it's important for feet, back, brain and the entire body, I recommend KZbin videos by 'Northwest Foot and Ankle'. I have no connection to them I just found it informative.

YOur style is ageless and timeless. I dressed in classic styles in the 80s and 90s during my career...camel blazers with black straight skirts, black silks shirts, khaki blazer in summer, lots of camel, black , white and brown bec I am blonde with loght skin and eyes. Now instead of black at 73 I wear browns with my main colors camel and cream. STark white isnt great on me either close to my face. THe return to blazers used as casual wear has been great for me because they feel like an old friend and I know how to style them up or down from all those years ago. I do wear red blouses sometimes and leopard print bec. I have freckles...faded ones since I have aged but leopard looks good ....not the huge spots but small to medium size next to my freckled face. Or a leopard scarf...I have several mostly silk but a few more casual ones too and that is most of the pattern I wear. ANd YES feet matter. I wore expensive court shoes for my career, not too high nec the were de riguer then for professional women. Now I wear kitten heels, ballet flats, and lower shoes due to balance issues. I collect leather and suede jackets, blazers, and coats in browns lr creams which is fairly easy to do,where I live. They add a luxe touch to a classic outfit.

I cannot preach enough about foot care. I visit my Podiatrist (Chiropodist) once a month; I could run a marathon when she's done. She once had to cancel an appointment and I burst into tears.....haha!! We spend nearly all of our day standing on our feet, but never pay any attention to them. Believe me, you will pay for your 'shoe mistakes' when you get older. We all bang on about how essential skin care is, but completely neglect our feet. Once you have visited a foot professional, you will wonder how you ever managed to get by without one! 😀
