Great uses for plastic bottles in the garden, I use some myself as watering devices. I love the last one using it for a planter, the kids at my daughters preschool will be doing this one. Thanks Huw.

I found it quite amusing that the plastic rings are expected to deter slugs (they don't at all in my experience), but then later in the video the slug trap relies on slugs crawing over the plastic. I make these traps and they're great. I just cut holes in the side of a complete bottle though and use the lid to pour bait through, then reseal.

Good idea on the seedling protectors from slugs. However, I think I'll keep it on in a more permanent status because sometimes my family members don't know which plants are important, and they start pulling up many of them. But using this, if they see a protecting ring around the plant, they will know it should not be pulled up. Thanks!

Nice hacks. Here's two more: I put two bottoms together to make a high humidity pot for propagating cuttings. Also I cut the top off part off, reverse it and stick it in the bottom half to create a funnel trap. Baited with banana it works great for fruit flies.

You can also put them in your planter boxes to keep hydrated longer and easier to water. You keep the top on the bottle and cut two or three holes in the side, depending on how big the bottle is. Fill your planter one third full of compost, add the cut bottle and then, insert a tube into one of the holes for easy installation of water. Then, fill with more compost, the plants, and finally mulch. Now insert water into the bottle through the tube and let it overflow a little to get the soil moist. This will keep the plants hydrated longer in the planter through a drought or when you go away.

Thanks for the wise tutorial. I have a question about the slow release water bottle you made that can be used while on vacation. I'm afraid about this method because here in S. California we have a mosquito problem. Is there something that it's safe for the plant and can be added to the water to repel mosquitoes from forming larvae while ?

These are brilliant!! Luckily where I live now I don't need to deal the slugs, but Wa state they were a constant bother, I had used the bottle/beer for them, slugs do love the suds, the watering bottle, I never cut it, I would put holes in the cap and bury them in the dirt, it watered a bit slower but worked very well. Can't wait to check out some more of your vids, thnx.

When I was in Wa, there was another trick I was taught for slug control, copper tape. At first I tried pennies, but seems those aren't full copper anymore, but they did look decorativly interesting glued to my pots around the top, then I found tape at a stained glass supply store. Now many garden supply stores carry it, it's much wider, 2" or so. There is something that repells slugs, they won't cross over it. It worked great for my container stuff, which was the only way I could grow some veggies, since I lived in an apartment, and I containered everything!

If you don't cut the bortle itself, but only the cork, then the water will release more slowly. Remember that the main ingredient in slug poison also kills moss and is fertiliser. It can also be used to weather wood. However, if you make slug poison at home it can be both cheap and more effective than the commercial ones.

Thanks, enjoyed these hacks. Here in my state we now pay 10 cents deposit for all plastic bottles. Just increased from 5 cents as of April 1, 2017. Naturally we get that back when we return them to recycling center but still these hacks are great ideas and I'm not such a pauper I can't afford to "waste" some of them on the garden. 😉

Nice tips! I've used bottles for some of the same purposes but in different configurations. Like yours better, though. I hadn't thought of making rings for slug deterrence. I MUST try that this year. Don't know what yours are like but I get invaded horribly each year. The damn things grow to 6 inches, average 2 to 3, and in 1 square meter it is often possible to pick up 150 or more of them at one time. My record was 243 two years ago.

***** Thank you very much, Jay. Good luck with your defence barriers my friend! No we don't have too much of a problem as we let our ducks in every couple of times a week to go on a slug patrol and always set up beer traps so touch wood we don't have many problems with slugs anymore. That is a huge amount! If you don't have any ducks I'm sure a neighbor would gladly donate theirs for a few days to help clear up your problem. All the best
