The worst crime is that of their programmers. They were given a Comedic Relief personality likely meant for Protocol Droids. The massive tragedy of the B-1 series came from not being programmed properly for their mission. Their programmers could have given them a colder personality like they apparently gave the Droidekkas or a flippant one like the type Astromech seemed to like. But they were so focused on blind obedience that they went with the somewhat easily intimidated, stupidly docile, way too obedient, Protocol personality. Give them a true Soldier's Personality, and the tragedy is lessened or even eliminated. I would have given them something along the lines of a Jack Churchill style personality, that way they could have laughed with the audience. BUT NOOOO. The Separatists had to go with a "We were made to suffer" Cybot Galactica style personality more fitting for a Protocol Droid than a Battle Droid. Seeing C-3PO's head interface so easily with a B-1 body made me facepalm because it tells you that they went with a VerboBrain; undoubtedly an out dated AA-n model like the 3PO line. Either way, their tragedy comes more from their creators than from their enemies. Just as you can train and instill courage, strength, and resolve in an organic, so too should one program a sentient, sapient Droid for their duties. The B-1 was given no such consideration.
@JustTheJames
@JustTheJames Жыл бұрын
Wasn't the B1s 'dopey' personality because after the battle of Naboo, they were updated to no longer require the central control ship with firmware that their hardware wasn't really designed for? It's actually a neat theory that maybe the only system the B1s could support without significant time investment developing something new was a modified protocol droid OS, although why Baktoid would have such software lying around (given that they only ever made combat droids) maybe diminishes the validity of that theory
@taitano12
@taitano12 Жыл бұрын
@@JustTheJames Not really. Remember, Anakin was a slave boy with no resources besides the scrap that Watto let him play with and/or have. But he was able to get an AA-1 VerboBrain for C-3PO. I don't think Watto would have let Anakin have, let alone keep it if it had any value. The Separatists probably got a bunch of them for next to nothing, slapped them in the existing B-1s and called it a day. A few months of programming battle strategy and tactics, patching compatibility issues. And you have a "battle" droid... One that would make excellent Mall Cops, but, soldiers? Not so much. They're not even well suited for military ship security, much less frontline warfare.
@kabob0077
@kabob0077 Жыл бұрын
They could have given them the personality of Sir Adrian "Frankly, I Enjoyed the War" Carton de Wiart, like imagine how effective the B1 would have been with better hardware and a personality like THAT.

I find it funny that you brought up HK before the end and one of his best lines in KOTOR 2; its also ironic that many years later after the Clone Wars were over HK-47 attempted to do the exact thing you mentioned and built his own army of droids from the CIS's left behind creations. The fate of the Battle Droids and of the various models is very sad, those that survived the conflict were shut down and turned to scrap by the Empire with the only way to avoid that fate was to have been stationed on some remote world where the commanders realized the shut-down order was a trick like Kalani or to have been abandoned on a world like Iego and taken into the possession of a caring youth such as Jabo Hood. Its one of the sadder parts of the Clone Wars. I'd like to see a video about Iego and about HK's Droid army in the future.

Well in the Jedis defense they often aren't given much choice when coming face to face with powerful space sorcerers with plasmatanas often backed by elite combat Clones. Imagine most Droids aren't trusted an shown Mercy BECAUSE they're not only sentient BUT sentient AND the enemy. An the Clones an Jedi aren't underestimating them would be my guess. Who'd thought a droid COULD drop from exhaustion and literally, somehow, apparently, drop dead from that.. you'd think the CIS would know better then to leave THAT in their programing

One thing to note, that though droids could feel fear, that also should mean they could feel remorse. But they don't. It's not that they were incapable to feel remorse, but they were programmed with a sadistic nature. They were designed to be killing machines, and killing anything, even unarmed civilians or people who surrendered, were shown to bring them joy. They almost never refused or hesitated to execute any immoral order given to them

Oh this is good, However I would argue that in at least some of these cases they could be argued as fighting combatants and would NOT be considered killing innocent lives. Such as the battle droids who were guarding Ahsoka and Cad Bane, they were both armed AND were aiding in Torturing a prisoner. So they weren't innocent. But some of these cases they were just cruel.(Then against Blaster wounds would likely also count as a war crime, so there is that, making both sides instant war criminals)

In the phantom menace, B1’s were efficient war machines, but once their central command of the lukrehulk was shut down, they went down, and so, the sepretists gave them their own ideas, with them being (mostly) independent thinkers. Good news: no central computer. Problem was, now they had emotion, scared shitless when they saw their incoming minds, of course, CIS engineers had no idea how to fix this, so they rolled with it to keep cheap.

Yeah, even a clone trooper fan like me can see that the only other characters in all of Star Wars they can find a reflection of themselves in would be the battle droids. Both were made for war, both were eager to fight, both still maintained their duty and loyalty to their faction after being exposed to war, both were part of the first two large militaries in the galaxy, and both get tossed aside. Clone Troopers die out without their home while battle droids are deactivated, with most of the lucky few staying active being programmed to serve groups like the Warbird Gang years after the Galactic Civil War. Not to mention both would be demonized by the Galactic Empire and the New Republic. Hell, the only difference is the clones had leaders who encouraged them to be individuals. It’s kind of why I get a little annoyed when in Canon as well as fans of the CIS say that the faction was at least more moral in terms of its troops, sending programmed battle droids instead of forcing organics to fight. Dooku himself even uses that to rally Separatists to the cause. This basically runs into two issues. Either A: the statement is true and the army is made up of mindless machines that will do any horrible thing without a second thought. Or B: the Battle Droids are basically just like the clones, making them a slave army. In fact, the CIS would be guilty of having an even larger hand in slavery if you interpreted that way since they made millions to billions of droids. Sure, just like the clones the droids didn’t take much issue with their lives and found some things to like about their jobs, but it kind of crushes the idea of a robot army being more humane than an organic army. And it highlights how even though I see the Galactic Republic as more moral, it barely wins out over the CIS. The Jedi are the only thing that shows any light of goodness in this grey conflict. And they themselves were becoming more grey overtime. Barely more moral and heroic compared to their enemy. That certainly says something about the Clone Wars and Palpatine’s machinations. It’s like the war between the Autobots and Decepticons in the IDW series. Until the last few years of the war on Earth, the Autobots weren’t that much better than the Decepticons, even under the command of Optimus Prime.

Well I think the CIS committed much worse mass atrocities than the Republic and much more frequently, but I get your point.

I always felt terrible for all of the battle droids that were killed during the Clone Wars. From Malastare to Onderon, they were all mercilessly slaughtered by Clone Troopers, Jedi, and Rebel scum when they were just following orders. After all, that’s what good droids do 😢

I mean tbf if they had the upperhand they would've shot at the jedi and clones so in the end letting them "live" is asking for a shot in the back

@@Kaltar_ I mean, not necesserily. B1 asked the others : "Do we take captives?" Instead of instantly killing Heavy, same goes with the Anakin on the bridge. At first they let him negociate but then tactical was like : "Since when would Anakin not lie to us on the battle front?" And summed this up. Not to mention Gungans on Naboo, which weren't killed as well. And also Obi-wan at this crystal planet (forgot its name).

@@jeffreycarman2185 well, not really, the droids were programmed to die, especially the B2 battle droids and the Bx droids who did not give af. B1s in large invasion armies also fought till death though

I'll also add that he cruelty shown to the soldiers of both sides by the enemies is just a tantemont symptom of just how evil Sidious was, all of these deaths were all a result of Sidious's dark corruption and starting the conflict. A video on the many crimes of Darth Sidious and a comparison between him and Valkorian whom Sidious obviously tries to emulate in every way would be nice to see
