His singing is "brilliant." Perfect adjective. He broke every vocal rule, in a way where it still conveyed the same emotion that having sung a given lyric "correctly" would have been intended to convey, which before him, was impossible. Such a difficult aproach to vocals, that no one has been able to do it since. He was a genius. Grunge rock died when Kurt did, because Kurt WAS grunge. Without him, music from the seattle scene was just "alternative," or "modern" rock...

Fun fact: Kurt intentionally liked making vocal lines that were too high for his register. He liked how his voice sounded when it cracked and shrieked trying to reach that high.

It also gives your voice a bit of rest, weirdly enough. When you’re doing super raspy low tones, your throat vibrates like crazy, and it gets really hard to maintain. The high notes are less vibrate-y and help you maintain your voice during long sessions, contrary to most other singing styles where high pitched are actually more harmful than your natural register.

@@GagandeepSingh-nr8gk It's also about melody. Kurt's melodies are unlike anything else I've ever heard. They shouldn't work, but they do. It's just genius and mind-boggling how he claimed to not really understand what he was doing musically. Hard to believe in fact. His melodies were extremely precise and the way he worked them in with the major/minor ambiguity of power chords and utilised chromaticism is incredible. Eddie, Chris, all the rest of them just wrote Neil Young melodies by comparison. If you really study Lithium, Sappy, On A Plain or Drain You you'll see what I mean. If you extrapolate chords from the verse melody in Drain You it's A(6) C#m(b9) F#m Bm / A C#(b9) F# Bm. Changing up those middle chords from minor to major with the vocal melody is just something else. Extra amazing that he apparently didn't realise he did that. He also makes good use of harmonic minor, melodic minor and mixolydian flat six scales several times, and he loved to sing sixths and sharp fourths, which would generally be weak notes melodically, but he makes them powerful somehow.
@notgringe2574
@notgringe2574 2 жыл бұрын
@@GagandeepSingh-nr8gk I agree that Kurt Cobain wasn´t so perfect in techinque, but he was good at catchy strange melodies. But not all fans know only Nevermind, that is completely invalid fact. But you need consider the fact that his vocals were not trained and at the same time they were naturaly raw and so powerful. And for me that kind of vocals were killer in Nirvana type of music. As much he said he didn´t wanted to be trained singer / guitarist. I agree that Pearl Jam, Soundgarden are technicaly better than Nirvana, but that is because they are more towards rock/metal kind of grunge. Nirvana is straight punk band, maybe punk kind of grunge, that is subjective. Punk was always about don´t minding and be yourself, they wrote easy catchy songs that had neverending fast rhythm, easy but strange melodies and raw screamy vocals. Punk wasn ´t and isn´t about being perfect as possible and don´t do mistakes, but be your kind of way even if it´s not perfect. For me the little mistakes were creating history of punk and other genres. Some mistakes are wrong but some mistakes can be original and you implement them in songs. Nirvana did that heavily too as much as many punk bands. As much I love and apreciate Kurt´s vocals at the same time I like Pearl Jam and god Eddie´s Vedder vocal are so versatile, he can sing soft and in next second he can scream as much as he want and it still sounds clear but powerful and raw. Kurt in the other hand had that little punch in his vocals and his vocals were so strong like he wanted to spit out his lungs. But Kurt´s vocals weren´t co versatile, that i agree... Peace and have a good time...

Dont exagerate, the vocals were surely difficult to replicate, they would damage your voice badly, kurt wouldnt last much as a singer, he would soon not be able to hit high notes. But the guitar playing ? Those are a beginner thing, nirvanas riffs and solos are mostly ridiculously easu do play, and that aint a bad thing, but saying that it couldnt be replicates ? Do you actually play guitar or are you just a dumb fanatic fan who idolizes everything kurt created ?

The intentional cracking is an intrecal part of his technique. Anyone can insert the intentional crack of voice into their singing, what made Kurt a genius is his knowing where and when to do it, to convey a desired emotion.... No one before, or since has been able to replicate the effect. Kurt Cobain was a genius. It's just a shame it took the world nearly 30 years to realize it...

I think the heart shaped box chorus is a really good example of Kurt's vocal abilitys without screaming or the B4 scream from where did you sleep last night. First time when my friend, a telented singer heard Hairspray Queen he was like "how tf does he even do that?" Can't think of anyone who sings in that fashion.

It’s like incorporating screaming from horror movies into a song. I don’t know if it’s true but he apparently would go scream at the top of his lungs out at a lake and hear his voice echo across. If you have ever done this it’s the most calming and soothing feeling to hear your aggressive voice echo and fade into serenity. It’s a release of negative energy.

I’m 15 and I can do most of these including school, about a girl, and territorial pissings. I practice my voice into a pillow a couple times a week and have been singing these songs for a few months now, I’m thinking about doing a cover concert one day, no clue when or where but one day for sure.
