I have large live oak that has bark peeling. 2 years ago, just 1 big branch in one spot. Now many places all over tree. Our arborist says it’s fine, but I don’t see any other oaks that look like this. New bark isn’t growing underwater. They took samples to send to lab. What do you think. It’s right next to house.

My Italian Cypress was doing well until I took out a lawn near it. I believe much of its roots had spread under the lawn and gotten water from the water for the lawn. For 6 or 7 years, that's almost all the water it got. I never watered it directly. I have watered it a lot since, but it has done poorly. I have read that Italian Cypress can easily be watered too much and get root rot. If the symptoms of being watered too little and too much are the same, how do I tell? I live in Las Vegas. I haven't given them any water in several weeks. Can I assume that if they had root rot, it's gone? If I water them once per week, will root rot go away?
@arboristBlairGlenn
@arboristBlairGlenn 3 жыл бұрын
Taking the lawn out changed the environment for your trees in more ways than just a water reduction. The sod acted as a mulch and helped cool the roots.

@@arboristBlairGlenn I've been afraid of that. If that's the problem, is there anything but normal watering that I can do? I've been hoping their root systems would rebound.

how come some grow tall and thin while others are beefier? IDK the genius or ages. if you top them does that stunt their hight an make them fatter? also, if one is damaged by a projectile, should the flopping branches be cut back or should we wrath tree with twine to put it back into shape? thank you!!!

Hi Blair, I am in So CA and have mature Italian Cypress trees. Over the 20 years I have lived here, I had a tree maintenance guy trim off fallen droopy branches. He passed away maybe 2 years ago, and with Covid taking away 2020, the trees have significant branch droop on a few of them. Should I get them trimmed? Also, I have recently taken to watering them by spraying water onto the tree. I believed that conifers absorbed moisture through the branch leaves. Am I causing the droop to happen?
@arboristBlairGlenn
@arboristBlairGlenn 3 жыл бұрын
Drought is a big part of the problem. Without seeing them, it’s difficult for an accurate evaluation. Sometimes, the limbs that fall out can be tied back into the mass. Best not to prune when hot.

if there was no threat of disease could you hedge row it? I cut some in half 7 years ago they were 25 years old about 20 feet high they grew back but now are sagging again ....I trimmed them up and they look awful should I cut them in half again? the cypresses are by a pool and just got too big...I hate topping anything.....I am thinking cut in half and strip it if it grow back fine if not remove it...

Can you? Yes. Should you? Well, that’s tough one. We hard cut some (see most recent video “Carob”). These had to be cut because of damage to building. How they will fair is to be seen. I see them hard pruned often but I also see them die.

I will be planting maybe 15 to 20 trees and would like to buy them as big as I can..I want privacy asap. lol. is it true that these attract lots of spiders and rats? somebody else told me they can be cut to keep them to hight? I have a cypress number 14 trees purchased from a nursery a year and a half ago and lengths ranging from one to one and a half meters and planted in the ground At that time the growth was fast upward while the trunks on the stem were slow Its height is now about 4. Meters to 3 meters But the problem we are facing now is the appearance of yellowing in the trunks on the leg with the appearance of spray on it from the bottom of the tree to the middle of the leg, while from the middle of the leg to the top is still green. The tree also began to bend towards the ground Knowing that I have used insecticides and fungi to combat this disease, but it is useless I hope you answer before yellowing reaches the top of the tree and die ⚘⚘

@@infoinfo3594 You should hire an arborist in your area who knows what will grow best in your area for your needs. If it can work in your area, you can try planting Skyrocket Junipers. They can get 15-20ft tall from what I've read. I planted nineteen of them around my pool this past Fall and plan to carefully prune them so they look like Italian Cypress trees. I wish I had the space to let them fill out naturally but I only have about 2ft of width to work with so that's how wide I am going to allow them to grow. I love the way my hands smell after I handle and prune them. Smells like Christmas!

I let mine go and they turned into MONSTERS, I finally had to take the whole row out. They were AWESOME until they just got out of control...what I replaced them with was a HUGE error I am paying for now! I started planting all the many ficus trees that quickly outgrew their pots...BIG mistake in a housing tract! I can not even believe how fast these things grow! Trim em way back and they come back with a VENGEANCE! Everything we plant in our back yard here in southern california just grows SO fast! We NEED something for privacy because our home borders a mobile home park where they have these homes raised up and only 3 foot from our wall! We need something that gets minimum 12 tall and can't be see through...ideas??? The only other thing I can think of doing is a tall lattice fence next to block wall and some type of vine to cover it?? Ideaas??? please??

There are a lot of dwarf trees to choose from. A row of smaller citrus would work if it doesn't get too cold. Crape myrtles are another choice because they grow slow and can be controlled like a hedge.
