I built one of these same way but I filled with layers of rocks and concrete. I also put 2" pvc pipe for tool pockets and a chainsaw bar sleeve. I also installed a pick hook to move around easy with my bucket. I used a garbage can and painted it to match my kabota. Works perfect. People need to watch this vid. Folks get hurt by not using ballast on the rear of a tractor if it has a loader. Good job sir.

Dude you really are an old duffer aint ya. You used my word Beautimus. I have been using that one for many years. I was born in 1966 so I would guess you are not like within 5 years one way or the other. Tats on both forearms also One is my USMC 0311 tat. But I also on the inside I have my Ruger tat and my parrot and others elsewhere. By God I am now subscribed to your channel. I have a Kubota L3301 with the front end loader also and have the same issue with keeping the back blade on as you mentioned. Awesome video and I look forward to many more. You said I think. I did that once and it hurt. But you can think in one hand and shit in the other and I would bet you know which would fill up 1st. LOL. I am actually building a roller for my yard for my tractor with 2 55 gallon drums that I welded together put a hole through the bottom one to put my bar through and a hole in the top one for my bar. Then I cut less than 1/2 the lid off the top one and am going to fill it with concrete and rocks and leave the barrels right on it they will rust away in time I have to build a frame and put bearings on the shaft. Should be at least as wide as my tractor.

just an idea to augment this great project. It looks like you centered the drawbar right through the middle of the barrel. What if you off-set the draw bar at 1/3 with the short side toward the tractor and the 2/3 side hanging out behind the tractor. The laws of physics would then apply using the weight hanging off the back as leverage, I'll bet that either that same size barrel would give you a higher effective weight or one could get the same weight as you did by only using 6 bags of concrete instead of 9.
@Daveinet3 жыл бұрын
Actually there is a better reason to o that. At some point you will want to buy a quick hitch. The problem is, your current setup will not work, as the quick hitch will not fit over the barrel. So it either needs to be moved to the front or move the drawbar higher up so the quick hitch will fit over it. Harbor freight has it on clearance for 129 bucks.

Good idea. The only thing I would do different put the top link all the way to the front instead of centered. This way it will work better with a quick hitch. I would probably still have to use an adapter.

Very interesting concept.. haven’t seen anyone do this before with a compact tractor. I’ve seen larger versions on farm equipment using oil barrels, but not something like this. Very neat. Till next time.
@NoSQLKnowHow6 жыл бұрын
I wonder if it would be better to attach it to the lower two points of the hitch, put the concrete in as high as it should go and then put in the top link hitch. Then let is dry while attached to the tractor, still on the ground, so you know everything is in the right place, especially the top link hitch. For the hitch parts, you should provide amazon affiliate links in the description so you make money if people buy the items. Also, next time, use an electric sander pressing it to the containier around as you go. This way it helps take some of the air bubbles out.
@richardk37174 жыл бұрын
Why not attach the top link to the draw bar? You could possible use a second draw bar to do so or use a long threaded bar used in construction. Nice video though. I used to live in North pole when I was stationed at Eielson.
@rodgerneeb301 Жыл бұрын
I realize I'm 5 years late, but if you had placed the barrel in a place where it could completely cure before being moved, then backed your trucks tail gate to it, there would have been no lifting required. Just bring the bag to the edge cut it open, roll the contents into the barrel.

Thanks AK. Just subscribed, I'm all about saving money. I think l will do something like this. I recently bought a J.D tractor with a F.E.L. They put 48 gallons of windshield washer fluid in the rear tires for ballast. So far it seems ti be enough weight. But if not I'm gonna try your engineering trick. Looks good enough to workout. Thanks.

AkDadStuff can you explain why the top link needs to be off center to the tractor? I’m thinking of making one of these for my L2501
@warped28754 жыл бұрын
@@joshuaparsons9645 Because when you lift the 3-point all the way up, the downward angle of the top link from the ballast(barrel) to the tractor will make it hit the edge of the barrel closest to the tractor, and bend the crap out of it if you lift it too high. Look at the angle of the top link in this image >>> www.tractorbynet.com/forums/files/john-deere-owning-operating/74239d1176382417-jd2305-ballast-box-vs-48-a-boxblade1a-jpg ...and if you look at his Part III video you can see that it can't be lifted off of the ground very far before the edge of the barrel contacts the top link turnbuckle, ...and since there is no down force on the 3-point, if the bottom of the barrel gets lifted from ground contact, it will also bend the top link. >>> kzbin.info/www/bejne/roTEdqisp7uXo8k

Just bought my first compact tractor, LS XJ2025. Was wondering whether or not u thought about using large rocks in the barrel then pouring concrete in and letting it settle. Seems that would work and save some money on the concert and the weight would be about the same.
@AkDadStuff6 жыл бұрын
I thought about that but I got a deal on the concrete. $1.00 per bag so that was only $9.00 total. Thanks for watching.

Rocks are quite commonly used as filler in large and deep concrete projects but as "Weight" it is a different story. All rocks do not weigh the same even if roughly the same size. So you could come out with a ballast that is quite a bit less than what you actually need...or more than you can safely handle. Better to stay with something that you can calculate. There are videos here on YT where the barrel was filled with nothing but rocks and the comments seem to be that Cement would have been a lot heavier. Others have used sand but still it's not as heavy and yet others have used water....but water ballast requires baffeling to avoid the sloshing and therefore weight shifting.
