Oh, number 7! 1998, Imagine a 7 years old boy, who had MGS as one of his first PS1 videogames, lovely right? Except he barely understood English. I had to go through a dictionary (there wasn't any electronic ones back in 98) to translate every codec call to Arabic as I wanted to understand everything, it was so hard and confusing and I was lost in translation that it took me nearly 60 hours to do my first play through, and I enjoined every second of it. I decided after that I need to learn more English, and videogames were my source of literature.

I improved my German language skills more through videogames than the lectures during the year I spent at a German university. One of my housemates had a really fun game - Heroes of Might and Magic 2 - that he let me play. The game was actually in English, but he also had a Polish girlfriend, who didn't speak English, who liked the play as much as I did. So, whenever she was playing while he was out at lectures, she used to come to me and ask what was happening. I had to translate the text on screen into German for her. I enjoyed the game so much that I actually bought a version of it before I finished that year - which of course was in German, creating a reverse of the previous situation. (I eventually picked up an English language version of the game, but that was long after I left university.)

Reminds me of my friend and I who have played ccg games growing up. We're actually the full package geek, video games, card games, anime, d&d and so on, but I digress. Either way, we started playing card games like Pokemon, Yugioh and the like when we were around 13 or so. I remember after we'd turned 18 we went to his house and pulled out some Magic the Gathering cards and his mom made the comment about thinking that we'd have grown out of it by now. We both just laughed and shook our heads. You can change, stop doing some things in favor of others (for example, I have a huge backlog of games on my computer and ps4 because I don't play games nearly as often as I used to, plus, I love buying games on sale, lol, because I spend a lot of time on KZbin watching videos) but you don't really outgrow something you enjoy. Also, as you mentioned, I look forward to having children so I can share my geeky passions with them.

Mu mother turned 57 not long ago and literally just three weeks ago did she ask me to borrow her Witcher 2&3 because she's wanted to play them for a while but has been too busy on Dragon Age (All of them, trust me she's like that) & Fallout 4. I remember how excited I was when I first got her into video games about 6 years ago now through Fable 2 & TES:IV, she adored watching me play them and eventually gave in and picked up the pad herself. naturally she quickly fell in love with every aspect of RPG games and it's my honest truth that I've never seen such a meticulous RPG gamer in my entire life. The completions of reruns of games playing in so many different styles and exploring every single nook and cranny. I feel blessed to have such an open minded mom, yet it's also kind of sad because when it comes up in conversation people are always incredibly shocked. It'd be nice for it to be a more common thing, but only time can do that I think. Thanks for the amazing Friday Feature, you people really are wonderful and this episode is no exception! Yes, Reindeer and Caribou are the same thing. Your garden variety deer--the one that's grazing in your garden right now!--is not a Caribou, and is not called a "reindeer." Although if you want to go strictly etymologically, the two would not be synonymous. "Reindeer" is derived from the Anglo-Saxon words meaning "horned animal" ("hrein" = "horn" and "deor" = "animal.") but the horned animal in question when they named it was the Caribou, not the simple deor. Unlike Rob, I didn't learn this from games; my focus in college and grad school was the history and development of the English language. That included courses in Anglo-Saxon grammar and usage.

The only rebuttal I have for you Rob, is in regards to games being art. Writing is an art, film making is an art. Acting is an art. Painting is an art. Making video games is a task, that, by it's very nature, encompasses all of these. Videos games are, absolutely art. In fact, let's take that a bit further. As gamers, we buy and play the games that we, personally, have a connection to. Thus, every game we play brings with it an emotional connection. We become invested in the world and the story through our interactions. At it's very core, art is about motivation emotional response and connection. Thus, yes, even Fifa is a piece of art. It is the culimination of many peoples work to build an interactive interpretation of the real thing... and... let's face it... every game dev has how many actual artists working the concept designs... Art is subjective... each person will have their own views on what constitutes good or bad art... refer back to my previous point about gamers and the games they tend to choose...
@Horus43026 жыл бұрын
Was writing a similar comment, and I agree with you that video games should be considered art for the reasons you named. And also agree that Fifa is a piece of art. People seem to think that something realistic can´t be art, but even the most photorealistic game, movie, painting is just an interpretation of reality with a creative process behind it. Also declaring something art doesn´t mean it is of high quality. The term "art" is quite neutral when it comes to quality, since as you said it´s quite subjective.

8: Playing video games is a competition. I'll start by applauding the people who speedrun games on the highest difficulty setting, because that requires patience and a full knowledge of the game, so, kudos to you amazing people. Next, to all the people who've looked down on me when I told them I play on easy, screw you. My first playthrough is always on easy. Why? I want to enjoy the story, the environment, the thing dozens of people have worked on. I want to take time to enjoy their work. If you play on easy or normal, don't be ashamed! You don't want to be wrecked every five seconds, and that's okay! "I finished the Witcher 3 in 100 hours." Cool! Must have been intense! While you were doing that, I was running from Novigrad to Oxenfurt and back again to see which path was faster, on foot, and on Roach. Don't let people tell you how to play. Go your own path, play at your own rythm, there's no wrong way to play! Just have fun!

CR** WHERE'S MY POTIONS HEAL HEAL HEAL!!" kind of thing Hah ahem sorry those were a bit long, I get a bit carried away talking sometimes......especially about games......sorry

Playing games IS a competition, if you want it to be. Of course, just because it's a competition for you and some others, doesn't mean that other people are interested, and yeah, it's pretty pointless to shame them for it. I'd just say, as you said, play games how you want and enjoy yourself. When I was a kid, I'd never look up answers or ask for help, because I didn't want the help. Now, if it takes me to long to figure something out, I just look it up, because I'm more interested in enjoying and completing the game then I am in being able to congratulate myself on figuring out a random puzzle or what have you that for whatever reason I couldn't figure out. Long story short, enjoy games however you enjoy them, and allow others to enjoy them how they enjoy them.

Picturing what is written on a page in your mind IS using your imagination, since you can't see the thing that is being described you have to create your own image in your head based on what is written there and not everyone pictures those things the exact same way. You are literally creating a visual representation of an entire world solely in your mind. You also have to learn to look for clues about what is going on in the story in between the lines (something that video games do as well, actually), solve mysteries in the text, create voices for character that have no audible voices of their own and analyze other sensual elements like smells and touch and temperature and all of that that video games, for all of their amazing imagination-invoking elements, can't really do. Both mediums require, in my opinion, equal amounts of imagination, video game imagination is more focused on environmental analysis and problem-solving rather than mentally constructing full-sensory information and world-building. Both stimulate the brain - they just stimulate different parts of it.

Number 7 is probably the most true in my case because of all the racing games that I play I can name just about any race worthy car and I constantly educate my family on what cars are what
@marhawkman3036 жыл бұрын
One I'd add to the list: playing racing games makes you a terrible driver. One of my relatives tried to tell me I needed to un-learn everything I learned from playing Cruisin' Exotica and Rush 2409... No. Those games did a very good job of teaching me what happens when you collide with on-coming traffic, or immobile objects.... I also learned to instinctively steer a vehicle and estimate turning radiuses and stopping distances. I don't drive often, but I have never wrecked a real car. Video games? I've destroyed more cars in video games than General motors makes in a year.

Hey Rob! I hope you read this comment. You forgot to mention one really important aspect of gaming knowledge on the seventh item of today's list. A lot of people learned English as their second language by playing video games. I'm proud to be one of them! So whenever someone says to you again that games don't teach you anything, you can tell them that games has been a language school for kids around the world since the beginning of times! Cheers!

RallzGuitar That is true! I learned english mainly in school, but if I wouldn't use it constantly for video games I would have forgotten half of it by now. Also I am currently learning Japanese just to be able to play some of the Japanese games with the actual language. So tell that to someone that video games aren't teaching you anything!

Very well put. The thing most people don't realize is that books don't necessarily stimulate imagination, they stimulate _memory._ When a book describes something to you, like a room or a person you put it together based on similar stuff you remember. It takes imagination to _write_ a book, but reading it doesn't really need it that much. As much as I love reading books, those people who insist they're the only true art form that stimulates imagination strike me as snobby.

That's what pissed me off about that lunatic feminst's statement that video games appeal to the 'male fantasy'. Her statement was not only wrong but also very sexist.
@thundercookie32146 жыл бұрын
I can never get over the fact that some so-called 'feminists' think being sexist against men is the essence of feminism (it's not). I can also never get over the fact that just because I happen to have a double X chromosome, people think it's odd I like to play video games. But what I absolutly cannot get over is the fact that people believe that there is no future in a profession in the gaming industry. Hello? Do you really - REALLY - believe that the video game industriy's global revenue of estimated 108.9 Bn USD in 2017, which happens to be a growth of 9.3 Bn USD seeing as 2016 the industry came in at roughly 99.6 Bn USD (source: Newzoo), is an indicator that the gaming industry is a niche industry? No? Then stop telling your kid that making video games isn't a job!

"Ruin my imagination," wow. My whole life, even when playing games with a set story, my imagination runs wild, sometimes ignoring the established story within the game and creating my own while playing. "Can't learn anything," puzzle games taught me how to do deal with time-related stress as levels got progressively faster as I chased the high score, which taught me to be calm and focused while taking tests in school, even under a strict time limit.
@Darkprosper6 жыл бұрын
I have never heard or read that anywhere, to be honest. I do think that books make your imagination work more, but games make it work a lot as well ! The "ruining imagination" thing is stupid, not even TV does that and it's the modern occupation that is the worst at it.

OMG--when SoulCalibur started introducing the character generators, I started creating original characters and weaving them into the games' storylines. It stands to reason that it's my characters I usually play with.

I feel like actually writing books probably exercises imagination better than reading books, so I imagine that it goes something like this: Writing Books>Playing Video Games and Reading Books (I see them as about the same, with both being more creative than the other in separate parts)

One misconception that gamers have. Playing shooting games means they can shoot real guns accurately.
@EmpressNoriko6 жыл бұрын
Or the opposite. I was an excellent shot in the Army, usually 40/40. I’m also a great shot now when I go target shooting with my Dad. But put a controller in my hand to play a FPS game and my shooting sucks! My gaming friends hardly believe I’m a great shot with a real gun I’m so awful in game. One does not necessarily translate to the other.
@CrtlFREEK6 жыл бұрын
VR is something that could change that. Especially with the AIM controller.
@rageoftyrael6 жыл бұрын
I think that playing shooting games can give you some real tips about shooting in real life if you pay attention. The simplest example would be that you shoot at the largest part of the body, aka, the torso. You learn this from shooting games, because while headshots are rewarded, they tend to be much more difficult to pull off, and it's much easier to just aim at the center of their mass. Will being a good shot in a game make you a good shot in life? Of course not. Heck, almost nobody is all that particularly good at shooters right way, so what's that tell you? Practice. You get good with practice. Thinking that you can shoot well in real life because you're a good shot in a game is just stupid. On the flip side, I'm definitely going to survive the zombie apocalypse. I know ALL of the secrets and rules. ;D
@dalmarampere66376 жыл бұрын
rageoftyrael I'm a crack shot with a rifle, can't hit squat with a handgun, but give me any weapon in a game and I'm an expert. I did however, learn to shoot at the arcade shooting galleries. Also, headshots are my forte, thanks to games like Mace Griffen and Time Spliters.

It's semi-true if it's a light gun game, but only for light guns. FPS games like HALO or CoD don't USE light guns. So yeah... it can teach you squad tactics I guess, but that's about it really.

The term "interactive art" seems to work in promoting non-gamers into the medium, but in my experience, dual thumb coordination is often limited... Ironic really, since more often than not, singular thumbing about cats and stuff on instaface etc, instead of actual social engagement is prioritised. It's their loss Rob. Their loss. 😏

Great video! I 100% agree that video games can be educational. My parents realized this when I was young and bought a lot of scholastic games for my siblings and I when we were in elementary school. These games were so effective that we knew everything our teachers taught long before they taught it. This did make school boring but it gave us a lot of free time in class to spend on self study. I spent this time studying subjects I was interested in, like Japanese. In fact, video games such as Okami peaked my interest in Japanese and I probably wouldn’t have sought to learn the language otherwise.

Great video, the part about video games being antisocial really stood out for me, mainly due to personal experience. In the late nineties one of my more bloody minded primary school teachers confiscated my and my friend gameboys. When I went to get it back at the end of the day, she informed me that she had done this not because gameboys were against the school rules (they weren't) but because she felt that they were antisocial... We had been playing pokémon. Specifically, we had been trading pokémon. Via link cable. Our gameboys had literally been connected together as we bonded over a SOCIAL ACTIVITY.

At one point, a work of art was a bunch of trash bags strewn on a museum floor. That piece of art doesn't exist anymore because it was accidentally thrown out by a janitor, who thought it was garbage, which it quite literally was, but it was a piece of art valued at I believe 2 million dollars.
