Great stuff guys! Even your microphones have stacking functions 🤣👏 Biggest mistake I made was thinking Hāmakua would never have serious drought 😬🤙

That is also something that we looked over too. Thank you for adding it to the list!

That was a great video! The microphones are good, function over fashion... but funny looking, but cool cause it's old fashioned... Like news casters. Anyways this video makes me a bit depressed because I'm making most of these mistakes. The two I didn't make yet are clearing too much land and setting up a comfortable place to live. The biggest thing that worries me is that I did not remove a few large ohia near the dwelling. I did chop down a few large ones that were definitely dying but I left some very large ones that looked healthy. I hope that if necessary I can fall them away from the structure that I am building. I will definitely think more about these big ohia before I plant so that I have a way to get them down if necessary. I didn't budget for a fence. I don't have a ripped lot and I've seen how it looks to put a fence that has to go over uneven ground, leaving gaps under the fence is difficult to avoid. I hope that by starting small I can keep an eye on a small area even if I have to be awake at night. I haven't invested in soil or mulch yet... But I will work on a way to allow for dump truck delivery if necessary. I need a load of cinder I guess, I already rotted a perfectly healthy ma'afala bread fruit tree I bought and planted in a deep pocket of what I thought was sufficiently good draining mud. I'm still stubbornly believing that the existing soil and organic matter is good enough to grow healthy plants, and that's after watching your videos about soil and amendments. I hope you keep making videos and grow your channel because they are a great source of information for me and anyone who watches and it's free for us and hopefully will be profitable for you. Thank you

Thanks for the video. I can very much relate to this content. I am developing an orchard on the Hamakua Coast of the Big Island. I have made many of the same mistakes that you mentioned. We met at the Big Island Fruit Festival and the Woodstock Fruit Festival in 2016. It would be fun to meet up with you again some time. Randy

Made a lot of the same mistakes as you. I still have stuff in pots that I got over a year ago. Too many plants. Didn't realize how long it was going to take me to plant them all. Unfortunately, can't afford pig fencing. So, just crossing my fingers. Tbh I'm going in the opposite direction as you. Instead of doing the whole cinder-soil mix, I'm just trying to find trees that will thrive in the soil that I have. I use cinder soil for things I absolutely couldn't live without. Lots of this is just trial and error. I learn from every mistake. If something does do well, I take note. Instead of finding a tree that needs me to baby it, I want trees that thrive on neglect. So neglect is half of my strategy. I don't want to rely on pesticides, so I just let it all go. If the plant fails, that's the plants fault. Need better genetics, or it's just not the right tree for me. Still living in a tent, but whatever. I'm camping in paradise. Things could be worse. I'm going to try to get housing soon. I try to see what neighbors are growing. So learn from other people who have already gone through the learning process. At the same time, be careful. Their trees may be growing because they use a shit ton of chemicals.

New subscriber. Found you from Kathleen's channel. The KZbin AI had suggested her channel on the video of your off-grid video. I enjoy being prepared, not depending on others, and so on. I look forward to watching all of your videos. Cheers

Our plan is to plant support plants for nitrogen fixing and improving the soil. I also know we'll be too impatient to wait for the soil amendment to happen naturally before starting to plant fruit trees, so more research is needed. 👩🌾🧑🌾

Love your videos and appreciate you sharing all the information! The only thing I might do differently is to put a fence up before cutting the ohia trees. My personal belief is that the pigs are one of the main avenues of spreadinng rapid ohia death and by keeping them out you might be able to keep your trees healthy. I lost one to the disease, but since putting up a fence 1 1/2 years ago, the rest have remained healthy. I understand your frustration, but they are such magnificient trees it is a shame to cut down healthy trees if it can be avoided. Mahalo!

LMAO at your mics! Hilarious! Okeydokey artichokey! So much valuable info, and your simple (silly!) candid delivery makes it so real and accessible! Non-judgmental, straightforward, self-effacing, and fun. Good to see y'all putting out videos again...your experiences are of great worth to any of us striving to set up our own homesteads and food forests here in Puna, or wherever...mahalo!

Yessah! I wish we left a part of the property un fenced for that reason. Can just throw some scraps to bate them in and the food comes to you.
