That was quite illuminating. I've never heard of Norman Foster, I'm looking up now to see just how wide and long the rock over me is. My first project was a passive solar ski chalet in 1978. Next will be a Climate Change ready, Net Positive survival bunker here in the desert. I'm not busy, I have lots of time for news and research. One of my fave architects is Francis Kere, surely you know of him? You've laid out a career's worth of reading and learning just with these 7 or 8 websites. I'd hate to be an architect in today's world. The learning curve is too much for one person to start, now that VR inter-communications and 3D and rendering are becoming commonplace. But they have to pay tens of thousands for the education meaning they are then shackled by the current employment environment. If someone wants more tract housing and they are paying, you take that job because you have to. Technology is turning architecture into a complex system of mini-cells of production and development. Climate change is dictating how radical we have to be. Form follows function. Conventional design doesn't fit anymore. Everything should be, or can be a custom fit.
@SurvivingArchitecture5 жыл бұрын
What an interesting comment to read. Norman Foster is a very big architect and is world known and I never heard of Kere Architects but I check out their website and they have some very interesting projects. Thank you so much my friend :). That is true it is a long way to become an architect some would say its a not a job it is a lifestyle. The VR does create a more personal interaction with the client and for the designers. The new technology does allow for some new materials and construction methods but I understand when you say that with the current employment status surely the course should have changed too.

The best architecture tip for students is to read a lot of books and to discuss with friends and teachers about them. And if you suck at presenting your work, there are so many tutorials on the internet that you could waste your life watching them. Show it better channel is quite good. Learn how to search on the internet and you will gain time for research. How To Brainstorm Using Google Search & Stock Photo Sites - KZbin from the futur Channel, it is not architecture related but it is so smart. Good luck for the prize 🤞🤞

Thank you, your videos are very helpful! Since I don't go to architecture school, I would like to see videos about theoretical information on concept development, diagrams and so on rather than how to do it on photoshop. That would be really amazing.

@refusoagaino68245 жыл бұрын
Frank Lloyd Wright established a school of Architecture in the desert near Scottsdale, AZ., (Phoenix, east end) in the '20s or '30s based on building shelter in the desert. (one way to say it) Not as well known as Disneyland, but almost amongst the fans of the architect. First year students have to build something that they will then live in, for the remaining 2 or 3 years of the training, using basically what is available onsite. I don't know the rules, because they use some ropes, tarpaulins and blocks and things. You can imagine the list of skills and talent required to build something successful especially on a first effort. During the '90s, I owned some land on the Pacific Ocean in Costa Rica. Squatters invaded, it took 18 months to remove them. I had to move onto the property and live there, a classic Pacific beach with the jungle in the back and the Galapagos and Australia going the other way. Too build a 'registered' house required plans, approved by a CR architect which are then assessed for value and a tax/fee is paid up front. It can run into tens of thousands of dollars. Anything with a footprint less than 3 m x 5 m, (10' x 17') had no permits or plans required, was called a "Bodega" (wine storage place) and had no other limits on height, etc.. I was a contractor in Canada, so I hired two local brothers for $10/day and spent about $350 (all I had) on bags of cement and a shovel and some plumbing and electrical parts. We dug a well at the jungle side accessing the fresh water table about five feet down. Used pre-cast concrete drainage tiles to line the well and put a double pitch roof over it, as in the pictures. The 'right' buckets fill themselves when you drop them in. A local farmer had a gas powered water pump that we used for a few hours, trying to pump it dry but couldn't. An electrical trunk line ran parallel to the beach and across the very back of the property. ICE, (Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad) gave me access. A buried line brought straight power, (from ICE's junction box) to my Ranchito/Bodega underground. (About 150') That gave me lights and music. The Bodega we built had a slab with three sections, one being a bath and had cement block walls to a height of 54" or so. A toilette was brought from San Jose on the bus. I sat on it for the four hour journey making jokes about CR's first bus with a "servicio". It was hooked to a mini-septic system with tank and tile field that would almost pass in Quebec. The brothers had never seen such a thing and approved of it, I think they built one at their own compound a mile further down the beach. I had two landfills for rubbish, most of which was collected off the "pristine" beach once a week. One fills up and you back fill it by starting another. 8 posts set in holes and held vertical by the slab supported a 2nd floor made of local, rough-sawn lumber. The wood cost almost $100 delivered. The post and beam structure came off the beach. I used the ocean's horizon and strings, to level the slab. 2nd floor had a 5 man camping tent nailed to the wood floor and three large tarpaulin canopies stretched from peak, down to the wood floor and lower, held by ropes and stakes in the ground. I remember thinking it must have been similar the Thor Hyderjalld's Kontiki raft. In the night it sounded like a sail boat. Twice during "aguarcerros" (Tropical thunderstorm) the whole top floor got blown back into the jungle, but it takes only about half a day to put it all back again. The main room was 71 meters from the median tide mark, had no walls but had a library, drafting board, speakers, an easy chair and a 'coleman' bar. Completely driven by a "what is needed next" prime directive, nothing else.
