right, trapped under ice he fashioned a chisel out of a steamy turd he dropped. he must of had a lot of iron in his diet. hilarious!

In recent days the Internet has been justifiably besotted by a magnificent 1947 photo (see below) of Peter Freuchen and his wife. Freuchen was one of the great Arctic explorers, celebrity adventurer, and author of the pre-World War II period. Among his many other achievements, in 1910 he helped found-and named-the outpost at Thule in northern Greenland, now the site of an immense US military base. Freuchen’s autobiography, Vagrant Viking (full text available on-line here), vividly describes his life, starting when he was a restless, unhappy youth driven to get out of the ordinary world into the wide open spaces of the north. Perhaps the most memorable anecdote in the book concerns his harrowing escape from a coffin-sized tomb of ice and snow that had immobilized him as he sheltered in a snowbank to wait out a storm. After hours of struggle, which included Freuchen’s futile attempts to claw his way out with his bare hands and with a frozen bearskin, and tearing out much of his beard as it froze to the runners of the sled that formed the roof of his prison. “What a way to die…I gave up once more and let the hours pass without another move. But I recovered my strength while I rested and my morale improved. I was alive after all. I had not eaten for hours, but my digestion felt all right. I got a new idea! I had often seen dog’s dung in the sled track and had noticed that it would freeze as solid as a rock. Would not the cold have the same effect on human discharge? Repulsive as the thought was, I decided to try the experiment. I moved my bowels and from the excrement I managed to fashion a chisel-like instrument which I left to freeze…I was patient. I did not want to risk breaking my new tool by using it too soon…At last I decided to try my chisel and it worked!” Long story short, Freuchen extricates himself with the help of his improvised chisel after about thirty hours of confinement, and crawls three hours back to camp. Crawling, because his feet are frostbitten. After he gets back to camp, gangrene sets in on one foot. The standard Eskimo remedy-a poultice of bloody lemming skin-stops the gangrene by peeling all the flesh and muscle off his toes. Freuchen is understandably dismayed by the skeletal appearance of his ravaged foot. Less understandably, he decides to do something about it, amputating his toes himself with a big pair of pincers and a hammer. Freuchen was a teetotaler, so no anesthetic was apparently involved. Polar Vortex sufferers, take note. The episode is a perfect illustration of the impulsiveness, determination, and McGyveresque ingenuity that drove Freuchen to adventure and survive in Greenland *+TheBub26* It really happened.

And then there is Ralph Brouillard code name Billy Boulevard of La Marque Texas who was in the Marines prior to WWII and a Chief Scout in the First Special Service Force and 82nd airborne in World War II. Ralph knew he shot and killed 4 to 5 Germans with firearms because he saw them get hit and killed. Others enemy that was shot may have only been wounded. He killed 75 enemy soldiers with a V-42 commando knife. He killed one with a crossbow pinning him to a stone wall. One he shot in the legs that was sitting in a staff car and then wired his hands to the steering wheel. He then poured gasoline over him and burned him alive. The enemy officer had tortured him days before with a blowtorch to his ears while he had been temporarily captured. He shot one German through the lens of the binoculars that he was looking through. He killed enemy German soldiers with Panzerfauste anti-tank rockets, his bare hands, mortar rounds, and hand grenades. Then in one battle he killed over 700 Germans that were in trenches that had explosives buried beneath it and strung with detcord. The explosives had actually been buried by German prisoners that were then executed. The end of the two hundred yard detcord was wrapped around two hand grenades. When Ralph pulled the pins and threw them out the window of the stone building he was in, the resulting blast blew the building down on him. He had to be dug out by fellow soldiers. He shot a pilot of a German plane while descending to the ground that was trying to strafe and kill Americans while they were parachuting to the ground in one of the five jumps they made during the war. He had previously shot a German pilot from a rooftop in Morocco with a machine gun when the pilot was strafing the town on a daily basis. The German pilot made the mistake of using the same route more then once. He flew gliders and knew how to drive a tank. He fought in Alaska, Africa, Italy, France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. He was awarded various foreign medals and 13 purple hearts, 2 bronze stars and a silver star. He is buried in the national cemetery in Houston Texas.

7:15 ... was once credited with capturing over 40 soldi...blah blah blah.. Leo Major was once credited for capturing an entire city on his own, and he had lost an eye(wich alone should've earn him a place in here) And what about Galvarino fighting conquistadors with wooden spikes strapped to his stumps. Or Audie Murphy, who could not, litterally, wear all the decorations he had received in his life. 7 is not enough
