I love the explanation of the tongue here. Nice lecture, and wonderful thoughts about the trumpet technique playing ideas of Clarke and Gordon. KTM is a game changer!

Moving the tongue to ascend has NOTHING to do with air speed. Neither does air "speed" have any relation to pitch when whistling. It is simply related to embouchure effort and does not require nonsensical "air speed" explanations to justify its use. Tongue arch ALONE has ZERO causative effect on pitch. If the lips don't change the pitch won't change.

Thanks! I hope to create a special article to post on my site with all the fingerings either on a list or on the actual music and make it viewable with a free account. I hope to do that before the International Trumpet Guild Conference at the end of May. Stay tuned.

Great stuff! I do have a couple of questions... 1. On the first breathing exercise, I do understand the concept, but what are the abdominal muscles function? While blowing out the air, keeping my chest high and expanded. What should I feel in my abdomen (squeeze tight/keep expanded)? I hope this makes sense!😊 2. How long/when should I do this exercise (beginning/end of my practice)? Thank you!!

Glad you enjoy it. It’s meant to show how simple breathing can be. Don’t overthink engaging the abs. That usually creates more tension than necessary. If your chest remains up the rest will work correctly. Do t raise your shoulders though. The standing breathing exercises can be spread between your practice routine so you do a set of 10 then play and then use the breathing exercises to get the horn off your mouth. The walking and running breathing exercises should be done on the street or maybe a treadmill. Take a look at all the other videos that I hope show how it all fits into a daily routine.

I’m 74 years old and KTM is new and entirely confusing to me. Is it as simple as changing from TOOOO to TAAA?

It's not about the syllables. KTM is where your very tip of your tongue is when tonguing. TOOO is really an incorrect syllable because of a misunderstanding of how Tu is pronounced in English instead of French. Tu is more like Teew in French, therefore more like the Eee vowel. The vowels and position is unique for every note. For developing KTM you have to think about the placement of the very tip to not go to the top teeth but use the portion maybe ⅛" behind the very tip to articulate. Various exercise books with intervals and scales will help with KTM. Daily Trumpet Routines by Claude Gordon is good and just playing scales with KTM and K tongued is important. K tonguing helps develop the KTM single tonguing. I hope that helps. Contact me directly if you want to talk more.
