I knew it!! I commented on one of the gold panning vids about how much these reminded me of B.C. Rich guitars! Such cool guitars! From entry level all the way up to jackson quality guitars.. B.C. Rich will forever be the coolest LOOKING guitars as well.

Wow. You have been really busy. An sort o hydroponics extraction fan put into your ceiling with a carbon filter would take away any smell from the polyurethane spray however would also draw all the heat out of your workshop so probably wouldn't be ideal. Thank you for sharing your videos with us Shane. I find them very interesting. Cheers

When I use dye on a guitar I seal it with a coupe coats of sanding sealer and that will lock the colour in and allow you to apply an oil finish over the top. I am a big fan of Hard Wax Oil finishes. If you do use a sanding sealer, may sure to use a poly one if going for an oil finish. I have had some disasters using a laquear sealer under the oil finish. It tends to cloud the finish

Thanks for that info. I went ahead and am putting General Finishes 'Seal a cell' (clear) over the color, then going to just finish with 'arm r seal'. General finishes are great products and totally forgot about them until I started digging through my finishing cabinet. I'll make an update video soon showing how they all turn out. Still need another week or two of finishing time.

If you're looking for a great water-based finish, CrystaLac BriteTone instrument finish is great. They have matte, semi-gloss and gloss. Their sanding sealer locks in stains and dyes extremely well. I'm finishing in my garage and had to find a good finish that wouldn't mess with my wife's COPD.

The neck that you have number 19 is definitely my favourite by far love the combo and inlay looking forward to the body you choose for it in wood and color!!!

There's a KZbinr called Paul Restorer who uses an airbrush to spay on his finishings. Seems to work real well in a makeshift small spray paint enclosure.

Not sure about matte finish oils, looks like you're on the right track there regardless. Have you ever tried staining a guitar with Iron Acetate (Steel wool dissolved in vinegar) or Aqua Fortis (Nitric Acid)? I use the Iron Acetate sometimes to ebonize bland woods. The solution reacts with the tannins in the wood, and can give interesting results. If you brush strong tea on the wood, it makes the effect work even on something like white pine.

I have done 'relicing' using coffee grounds to make white nitrocellulose pickguards and tuner knobs look vintage, i also have some iron nitrite, which i'll be experimenting with to make the curly maple grain pop, i just ordered it yesterday so should be able to play around with that stuff next week. I'll take a look into Iron Acetate and Aqua fortis as well. Always fun learning new stuff thanks!

I would try Rubio monocoat with the black pre color. I don't have any experience with the black pre color but the product is pretty much all I've been using for a long time. One cost may give you a matte enough finish.

Boiled Linseed oil doesn't make wood glossy and it should work pretty good for them. Not shur about the black. You could also try tunge oil
@KleshGuitarsOfficial
@KleshGuitarsOfficial Жыл бұрын
Yep, Tung oil is what I tried in my tests, however even after 3 or 4 coats of tung oil over the black stain, it still bleeds through. The Tru-Oil gunstock finish seems to be working good though. Thanks for the comment!

You could also check out hemp seed oil and cotton seed oil. I don't know if either would work for you but it's worth checking out. For that perfect finish.

Have you ever experimented with matte Mod Podge as a sealer? Very user friendly and doesn’t affect the colors. Beautiful looking guitars!

I have used it for gluing puzzles together, it's like a white glue that dries clear right?

@@KleshGuitarsOfficial essentially yes. I have seen very intricate paintings sealed with it without affecting the paint.

Shane, it's gonna be some time, so a rough estimate would do: what sort of price range do you start at? Been watching your videos a long time and I think you're a human being who deserves my money, when I get it lol I'd prolly be looking at 8 strings w/ built-in MIDI of some sort; I have an 8-string Ibanez RGA-8 and had adapted a Roland MIDI to it that I loved (but something broke and I haven't been able to afford to replace or repair anything yet) Thanks!!
@KleshGuitarsOfficial
@KleshGuitarsOfficial Жыл бұрын
So after doing some math, and deciding what to charge for these guitars, understanding that there can be exotic wood and hardware/electronic upgrades, they'll likely be starting around the $2800 range and go up from there for a 6 string. More strings, fancy woods and electronic upgrades bring the price up depending on my cost for those items. Once the kleshguitars.com luthier shop is built, you can add upgrades to get an exact cost as you build so there's no surprises before ordering. Should be another month or so before kleshguitars.com luthier shop is online.

My overactive brain has a question. What if you put a wood inlay logo on the backplate, for guitars with just a sticker logo on the front? That way if the sticker comes off, the guitar is still branded. Thanks for the update, it was nice catching a glimpse of Timber. 😊
@KleshGuitarsOfficial
@KleshGuitarsOfficial Жыл бұрын
Cool idea - the 'sticker' though, is a 'waterslide' decal, same thing that Martin gutars and fender guitars use. They won't come off, they'll be under layers of finish, once I decide what finish to use. Even under an oil finish, they'll stay put. Thanks for the idea!

Looks great Shane! I'm not much for shredder style guitars, but that xk burl top is nudging my opinion a bit... 👍
@KleshGuitarsOfficial
@KleshGuitarsOfficial Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Remember, all guitars are 'Acoustic first', these instruments, shedder style or not, are all about finding specific tonal qualities found through wood combinations. Luckily many of the 'good sounding' woods are also awesome looking !

Cool, Shane. I'd wondered what you've been up to. That book I sent for Heather; did she enjoy it? I published the fourth book in the series yesterday. I'd asked about the seven string some time back. I found a cool video, by Eric Calderone, The William Tell Overture - The Lone Ranger Meets Metal. Check it out!!
