Ever since Dragons and despite what he did to Genji I always wished for this broody "old man" to find peace and eventually happiness. Although I haven't touched the game in ages, hearing this story warmed my heart once more for the beautifully crafted characters and world of Overwatch. ❤

@@Hammeh I never was much for shooters or PvP to begin with but the characters, world and emphasis on staying hopeful despite all odds was exactly what drew me in. These days, I have become a Genshin or Star Rail dweeb. Quiet different, but the characters of Overwatch never truly leave my side. :3

Would’ve been interesting to see play out as a pve mission. Genji joining up with them and Kiriko trying to be a middle man for the brothers focusing on the current threat but also throwing in small advice here and there would make for some cool interactions

We may never know..unless there's some other game in future! Short stories are a thing blizzard know how to jam on, and novels, so, maybe there'll be a chance of more!

⁠​⁠@@HammehThe short stories are definitely a treat, so I wouldn’t mind to see more in any form! My personal hope is to see more of Bastion since Torb apparently sees him as a potential end to the current events of the story and he was hinted to play a vital role back when Jeff Kaplan was still involved. But if the ninjas ever get revisited with a continuation I can imagine a super fan servicy climax with nice meaning behind it. The two reunited Spirit Dragons move forward on the (literal) path of healing thanks to the support of the Kitsune Spirit. A dear friend from their childhood being the missing link to help rebuild what they once destroyed would be neat.

I'm so mad this is just a short story 90% of the community will never read. Most fans of the games don't care for the books, and that's understandable. Gamers like interactive forms of media, with animations and cinematic being at the top of that list. Books simply aren't on it. That being said, I adore Hanzo and will slurp up every piece of content regarding him I can find. I'm glad he's finally moving towards peace. 6 years too late to get any money from me, blizzard... But I'm glad you didn't give up on him.

I understand jinora, what would prefer instead? Animations/cinematic? I think with pve not being a thing in its current form now, and cinematic being expensive (the animated 3d shorts, not the illustrated stuff), books and short stories are a way to give some story more frequently and cost-effectively (business brain). I thought it was a really nice hanzo character insight, hope you enjoyed it!

​@Hammeh I love reading the books but I think they should publicly announce them more. The only time I see announcements for short stories is from youtube community posts. I think if they got the word out on every platform, people would be more inclined to read them!

@@Hammeh For some reason I couldn't reply to youtube comments (I think it had to do with my pop-up blocker) so sorry for the delay. Personally, and keep in mind I say this ONLY because the PvE is canceled... I would've preferred animatics. As animation is an easily-digestible medium. Not just that, but people fell in love with the lore BECAUSE of the animated shorts. There's a lot of money to be made in an animated series, Arcane clearly showed that and Overwatch already has the setup for it in what they've already made. Even if they decide to go 2d over 3d it would still be preferable over books, though 2d would likely be more expensive anyway. There's ways to make animation affordable without overworking/underpaying your animators. Any publicity for this lore would be preferable to this, to be quite honest. The books are launched with so little fanfare...

Haha, no worries, it's not weird, I've had similar type of reaction before. I've done facecam stuff in the past (and streamed!), but not most of the time indeed. Just experimenting a bit as I get videos going again. Some tell me to stick to talking/no facecam, others don't mind, others don't care! We'll see how we go!

I have the book too and I read Hanzo's story every week at least twice. It's just so entertaining to read over and over again. Hope we get more of interactions or even a cinematic again with him or Genji together.

Wait I'm still confused, so are the dragons magic or tech? Or how does it work? The technology being referred to could be that the 'dragons' respond to the weaponry and can be controlled using them if someone is proficient so Weaponry/Technology can control the Dragons/magic, am I getting this right? Didn't read the book yet as you're my only hope!

I mean, based on how the Kitsune was supposed to be passed from Kiri's grandmother to her, I don't see how that could *not* be magic to some degree, because Kiri's grandmother would've been from our era if not older and we simply don't have the technology to even remotely replicate something like that. There's also the idea that's fairly present within the magic aligned abilities in the game that what's considered magic could also be interpreted as science yet unknown, so it's probably a bit of both regardless.

They don't 100% confirm of course, but to me they sound like augmentations on the quality of Toshiro Yamagami's weapons (the 'unique' way he makes them), as said in the story, plus training/comfort with the weapons. Maybe the Shimadas have/had some special training with them? I see it (personal headcanon) as more tech-y, perhaps with augments for these. That doesn't explain Kiriko's Kitsune necessarily! It's left ambiguous enough, but perhaps more of a leaning towards a tech solution after this I feel :)

I do believe to some extent there is magic at play here and then controlling those powers as best as you can then wanders over to the tech side. Genji's dragon quite literally merges with him to amplify his abiltiies, in the Sparrow Skin, you can see extra effects that you cannot see in other skins where his eyes emit a unique glow, then he can also merge it just onto his sword alone ( Short vs Diablo ) and then he can also, like Hanzo, use it as a projectile should he want to do so as seen in the dragons short. I believe that there is a possibility there is a different dimension where these spiritual creatures/gods (Dragon, Kitsune and eventually Tiger, lets be real here) come from. At some point they had chosen members of families to entrust their will and powers to however, their powers are difficult to use in some cases, which is where the technology part comes in. The technology is used to do its best to control its power in order to harness percentages of it to use in battle because there is just no realistic explaination for Kiriko being able to great those massive kitsune gates and amplify a moving vehicle and in canon, teleport in and out of reality and reppear elsewhere. I think they haven't finalized how they will introduce these creatures to us/their backstories and how they were passed down generation after generation but it will be interesting. Even Hanzo's "Only a Shimada can control the Dragon" implies that he has to have seen others (Dad most likely) do it first before being able to have it passed down to him and do it too. I don't know fully yet but man do I have sooo many more questions.

@@Hammehyeah because Kiriko not only broke the game state she also broke the lore. Her being there with Genji and Hanzo as kids doesn’t make sense because of her age. Devs said there wasn’t magic in the game ages ago yet release Kiriko with some spirit thing “passed down” from her grandma. It’s not hate- it’s SLOPPY writing. They easily fit Sojourn in the lore whereas here they threw Kiriko in and have no interest of fixing it. Sucks to see :/

overwatch lore is cooked. this is another example that kiriko is somebody's oc. she is not canon. this story is not canon. even ow lore is getting the hollywood treatment of dumbing down legacy male characters to pave the way for the new female protag. i guess they couldn't be bothered to writing an original story that highlights the strengths of a character without dumbing down another beloved character
