I lived in Trinidad. Carnival was always positive and so good for the community. The whole country would prepare for months. Pan bands, incredible costumes, so much constructive effort. Keeps the youth involved with positive activities. Good stuff.

Unlike many Americans, I have had a broad view of the world, not just my country. I have lived in 18 countries. Partially from my business and partially because my wife and I lived on our sailboat and loved to travel and experience other countries, cultures and people. We were #1 in the world in the fifties and early sixties. Now we are rated between 27 and 42 for quality of life. That’s education, healthcare, upward mobility. Work/life balance, longevity, safety and security, equality etc. and we continue to move backwards. And democracy is eroding. By expanding our horizons we have a clearer view of our country and the rest of the world and how we fit. There are MANY things that we can learn from other countries. We need to open our eyes and learn from others. That’s the bottom line.

As a life long Boston resident I can say from experience what will need to happen is the "code of silence" needs to be broken. Charlestown and Southie are much different places than they were 20 years ago. Once the criminals were rounded up the neighborhoods became much safer.
