I am grateful to have had the best PhD advisor. Without her guidance, obtaining my degree would have been impossible. She is an incredibly practical individual, adept at navigating any challenge. I attribute 90% of my success to her invaluable support.

6:36 I am getting my PhD because it is free and I am bored. I have no desire to actually do anything with it. My plan is just to go back to industry. Or open a hot dog stand.

i had the "always changing the research project and always changing their mind" type. out of 4 years i lost about 2.5 years because of this + no supervision at the beginning. didn't know where my life was going and all the lost time destroyed my prospects of a research career before it even started as i could only publish 1 paper. the good side is that now nothing fazes me or disappoints me anymore, and i gained a lot of wisdom from this. your videos are spot on and much needed as most undergrads don't realize what academia is actually about.

As a long time follower, I love this type of content. Was lacking interest in all the AI videos.

In Karolinska, supervising PhDs is a tightly regulated activity! PhD MUST do a "half-time" presentation in which an independent committee gives recommendations where to go to finish it! Can anyone share similar experiences?

The most important lesson I learned going through my PhD was that you needed to manage your PhD committee rather than let your PhD committee manage you.
@sarahb777567 ай бұрын
Sadly, I took the “managing up” advice too much to heart and was much too hard on myself when a particularly scattered but strong-willed committee member simply refused to be managed.

Journal AI policies can just be ignored. As long as your claims are correct/properly cited there is no real problem. AI generated text detection is not accurate enough for anyone to use in making judgement calls on research papers.

The full epistemological crisis of AI has yet to hit. Kind of like the people who knew the world before the zombie apocalypses. Once the youngers come up who have only ever known AI, I think we'll reassess if AI is good or not. I think in the next 20 years, we will see PhD candidates who are functionally illiterate.

Agreed, I don't think it's possible to properly understand a topic if you're having a generative AI do the writing for you, that's where all of the learning happens for me personally.

Contrary to some views, AI is a powerful tool when used correctly. Gone are the days when I struggled with complex research concepts. Now, I can progress in my writing even when grappling with challenging ideas. Here's how: 1. I can effectively and efficiently comprehend difficult research concepts, using relatable examples for deeper understanding. 2. I read more papers and produce high-quality work. Remember, AI is a tool, like any other. It refines my ideas, but it's still my responsibility to make them context-specific when I encounter "writer's block." 3. With AI, there's virtually nothing I can't do, even with minimal assistance from mentors and superiors. It can serve as a personal assistant in almost every aspect of life. 4. As a scholar, I work more independently and accurately. 5. Understanding complex concepts makes work enjoyable and interesting, and encourages diligence. It's a misconception that AI does everything for you without effort. That approach often leads to subpar results for those who engage it. The benefits of AI can be fully realized with a good understanding of prompt engineering, which requires diligence. AI is here to stay. Those who doubted its long-term usefulness may regret not embracing it sooner.

@traineewaden906 it's inappropriate to judge the worth of a tool for others based on your own personal learning experience and preferences. Not everyone learns the same way.
