Zooming out slightly after you lock in your composition is insanely helpful, especially with the resolution of modern cameras. It's just the worst feeling to look back and see that you could have had such a great photo if your perspective was just slightly different. Giving extra room when possible has been essential for street photos, where I'm not always going to be confident that the pictures are level or that building lines etc. are where they need to be. That is, unless the focal length is achieving a certain look, but that could just be more of an issue because I'm on apsc.

As a bird photographer I never imagined I would try landscape. But listening to you and seeing your videos and pictures, wherever I go, I am immediately conscious of the landscape and your tutorials start prompting me to look around and see it all through your eyes. The best thing about your videos is you don’t waste a single word and I replay to listen to every word .😊. Thanks a ton.

Good tips. About the shutter speed: what you're basically saying is ignore all the "xx stops of stabilization" IBIS claims and use the 1/focal length (or 1/2 x focal length) rule regardless (with IBIS enabled)?

This video showed up at the perfect time which I can put into practice immediately. I’m leaving in the morning for White Pocket with a new 28-400 Z lens. I bought the lens for its weight. I’ve struggled with my heavy 100-400 lens because of breaking my wrist a few years ago. While not as sharp, I’m hoping to have less trouble with the lighter one. I’ve always gone with 1/focal length. Your tip to double it is a great idea.

Couldn’t agree more with the zooming out slightly tip. When I first got my 150-600mm I was shooting everything at 600mm, it lasted about a week 😉 it is a powerful tool having such reach but quite often too much, backing off even 50mm can give you a bit of leeway. The double shutter speed to focal length will be one I will be putting into practice for sure 👍 thanks Michael

Yes…look behind you, I recently went to shoot a particular composition and it turn out the lighting wasn’t to my liking, so I turned 180 degrees and…there it was…the shot…perfect lighting and composition!

Great Tips Michael. 2X shutter and 70-100mm starting point before zooming in are intriguing concepts. Will give them a go next time out.

Koolio. Nicely distilled points. I try to make a habit of taking the zoomed in and then back off, and off, and off. Thank God I'm not using film anymore!

A common mistake with the wide range of zooms is not paying attention to the metering during the length change. Especially if you use the averaging modes of light or focusing .

I'm curious about the ratio of your keeper shots between 300-400 mm compared to the 100-300 mm range... Would you be satisfied with a 70-300 lens or rather would you stick to the 100-400?
@MichaelShainblum2 ай бұрын
Great question, I do a lot of images at the 400 end of the lens, maybe 50/50, but I do not always bring my 100-400 with me on shoots. Sometimes I sacrifice and bring the 28-200, then just crop if needed.

Nice. Unsure about aperture on long lenght
@MichaelShainblum2 ай бұрын
Thanks, to summarize that part of the video. If everything your shooting is far out in the distance don’t worry about aperture, it won’t matter. If you are shooting multiple layers and need them all to be more in focus. Do a higher number like f11-16.

Michael, I am watching your channel and photos instagram from long and I really got inspired from you. I really need some help that is my sigma Telephoto 100-400mm in peak design tripod. How to keep long lens stable and level in tripod. Mine is slowly going down and my composition get miss after camera micro slowly moving down. How to tide long lens? Can I hold lens with one hand and tide ball head with other hand? Please I really need help. Your great photographer
@MichaelShainblum2 ай бұрын
The peak design tripod is really flimsy, I would personally recommend switching to really almost anything else. I have now had 4 people on workshops break their peak designs in the middle of our sessions.

@@MichaelShainblum Thanks Michael, After compose and level the and do you hold lens tide or lightly and others hand is tide ball head? I really need your help because my experience lens is tiny fall down from composition and level the image before pressing shutter?
@mechanicalhorserider25122 ай бұрын
...and the ballhead! You need a ballhead that is able to carry the weight of your gear as well. I had a travel tripod from Manfrotto years ago. The tripod was ok, but the ballhead was way to small for my camera + telephoto and a 20mm prime for astrophotography!
@MichaelShainblum2 ай бұрын
@@pematamang9268 Unfortunately, that is also because of the ball head you have. Something more solid with more tension control will help with that issue. Leofoto makes a really good ball head. That's been my favorite reasonably priced one I have used in a while.
