My urologist told me to stop eating beef and chicken. I have had many surgeries to remove abnormally large and irregularly shaped stones. The last one I had was 13x5 mm. They told me this before I started keto. I am afraid every day because of the beef and chicken protein I eat. I have lost 67lbs since February and have not had a stone YET. I just hope it isn’t coming soon. I’m glad you went over this topic.

Look into reducing oxalates in your diet. Most kidney stones are made up of calcium oxalates which are chiefly found in vegetables and nuts, especially almonds! @@mini-wy7us Yes, but as explained in this video, meat/animal based protein is much better for us. Vegan communities are trying very hard to label meat, eggs etc. as the most unhealthy things in this planet, while promoting all the heavenly health benefits of modern day, chemically processed plant based "food like products". I do understand the ethical views that most vegans and plant based diet followers have, but unfortunately that does not change anything. Despite the suffering and death of factory raised animals, that does not make meat bad for human beings. We can go into another subject by talking about antibiotics, GMO grains and all that crap that goes hand in hand with the mass production of meat, and yes... that stuff isn't good for us.

In 1973, I was diagnosed withe Severe Hypoglycemia and Placed on a High Protein low Carbohydrate Diet Supplemented with Mega-Vitamin Therapy. I was always very active and could run full speed, (as fast as I could move my legs without falling on my face), for a mile and almost never run out of strength or energy when I was around 18 yrs old. After being on that Diet for about a month and a half, I actually felt Better and more energetic than I did at 18! Unfortunately, I had to drop the supplements and drop the full diet as I couldn't afford it at that time. As for using Soy products, I had an acquaintance who used a lot of Soy products, Biked everywhere, on the treadmill every morning and Pushed weights regularly. One day he showed me some open sores on his legs and asked me what I thought the Problem might be. I told him to git rid of the Soy and start eating a Greasy Hamburger at least once a week as he seemed to be getting more than a little effete to me. Never did know if he took the advice . . . probably not too well.

Is pork still red meat or “the other white meat?” Thanks for your clearly presented informative videos.

Maybe I can suggest a couple of answers here until Dr answers. 1.The less you cook meat the more nutritious it is..except chicken and maybe pork. 2. Beef has been touted as the Meat superfood, especially the organs. 3. Pork isn't a ruminant. A lot depends on how your body works with pork or any meat. Personally, unless straight from a local butcher, I dont eat much pork and once a week chicken. The test is beef and eggs. Im 2 years CV.

I don't know about it being the other white meat, I think that something manufacturer came up with to get us a pork instead of beef. Thank you. You answered all of my concerns about protein sources. Im a triple positive Breast Cancer survivor, diagnosed 5 yrs ago at the end of September. My oncologist told me to stay away from Soy products due to the plant based estrogen. Was also told that fat cells can produce estrogen, as can the adrenals. 18 weeks of 4 different chemo agent treatments and a continuation of Herceptin , ending at the year mark. Refused to have radiation. Said goodbye to my “girls” and am now the proud owner of foobs. Am 60+, and had always been told to not overdo the consumption of protein for fear of kidney issues. Was concerned about too much animal protein. The information seems to change daily, depending on sources. It’s so confusing. Thank you Dr. Barry 💗

Hi Crystal, my name is Karen. I am 61 and in my 8th year as a BC Survivor. I also refused to have radiation and instead, insisted that they do a hysterectomy. I figured that if there were any stray cancer cells floating around, they were going to migrate to the female organs where they would be fed off the estrogen and progesterone. My concern about hormones right now is that I am still on hormone suppressants. I have decreased them to four times per week but I do worry that they are contributing to a hormonal imbalance. My husband and I both need to shed pounds and there are so many different ways out there that I get frustrated. I am going to give the keto to carnivore journey a try. You are already doing the right thing by following keto. Doctors, in general, have a bad case of confirmation bias...they only interpret the things we are talking about, through the lense of their own education. For them to accept keto would mean they would have to change professions or become independent medical practitioners. My own doctor has no clue about nutrition. Full of "keto is dangerous" nonsense. It's not our job to educate them because they have too much invested in a false narrative for us to be able to change their minds.

Partly due to their ability to chew well enough. From my experience, their nutrition needs drastically change. Their nutrition, especially their protein needs actually increase. It seems for them to have the muscle mass and energy it takes to do many things, takes more protein. Just look at their labs. Many times the numbers being out of range are consistently brushed off as part of aging. I call BS. I don't claim to be an expert. Just odd that every senior I've cared for, have a problem meeting their nutritional needs. They eat entry, just not nutritionally well.

I was so afraid to eat high protein because I am a diabetic and have fatty liver and gallbladder has no function (the test the dr had me take then wanted to cut it out) Dr Berry... I have a horrible time staying away from carbs... I have tried and tried and tried and am in tears every day because I cannot make myself do it... Is there any help .... Such as.. can you please help me to fix my diabetes, liver, etc, even when I struggle so much? I know people say make a choice live or die... that isnt helping!

Did you try eating more fat? It helps me where I don't crave any carbs.

Would love it if you could delve deeper into the 30 grams/meal myth. I've heard that one from bodybuilders for decades. I recently watched a video talking about how the body doesn't like to keep nitrogen around and so will remove the nitrogen from any amino acids that don't get used within several hours after absorbing them and excrete the nitrogen in the urine, leaving just the carbon backbone to be burned as sugar. Any truth to that?

I love eating keto/carnivore. I've lost 120 lbs over the last two years. I no longer have chest pain, or leg pain , no high blood pressure, no inflammation hardly at all. I'm going to get a CAC test to see if I have clogs in my heart , just to be safe, given family history. I'm tempted to make dr. Berry my pcp, even though I'm 4 hours away from him. Haha

It's funny the timing of this video. I just watched someone spewing one of these protein myths today on a "health" channel. It was a video about reversing type 2 diabetes. It was a waste of time to watch; they just regurgitated the same information that old school doctors preach.

I can't find anything with your opinion on pea protein and hemp. I know you say meat is a better option but I don't always have access to "real food" (travel a lot for work). I can't do Whey protein shakes (lactose intolerant). Are these other protein substitutes ok when trying to start a keto/low carb diet

My 3year old toddler is lactose sensitive so I give her soy milk . Is this bad for her ? What are her alternatives? She is a very picky eater .

I have proteins in my urine, but I also had high blood pressure and believe that for the pressure on the kidney system, that damage allowed proteins to go into my urine, not the proteins I eat

Let me add, I have had proteins in my urine sense I was 14 years old and my kidneys work fine, the keto way of eating is the best thing that has happen in my life, had gout, had sleep problems, was overweight, had whats called a chemicals unbalance, had high blood pressure, pre-diabetic, no more medication and I can eat all the Himalayan salt I want and it don't do anything to my pressure, my isoline is low and I have lost 40lbs

Curious how this relates to keto, which usually wants you to eat only about 20% protein. But seems like recent trends are suggesting more protein on keto is okay?

yeah if you're worried just test your ketone levels, personally i'm in ketosis eating like 30-40% calories from protein

you know, for years i have gained and lost weight over and over again on atkins which is a high protein, moderate fat, very low carb diet. i tried keto and stalled forever. when i up the protein i usually lose more. i add usually because i freak out during "that time" and blame it on my diet.

That's old keto thinking. Geared towards therapeutic ketosis. If you have a brain or seizure disorder then yes, you want to have 75% fat. However the last year or so all these keto "gurus" have trended towards a nutritional ketosis for weightloss. So 60% fat/35% protein/5% carbs is a better bet. After all lack of carbs is ALL that determines a state of ketosis.

You should reduce the fat you are eating on keto if you find you can't lose weight. It's probably because you're not active enough to burn it as fuel. Or better yet, start exercising

Thank you so much for this video. The timing was perfect as Number one has been weighing on my mind recently as I would think back to when Atkins first became popular and there were so many warnings about how too much protein was bad for the kidneys. Starting week 4 of carnivore and couldn't be happier. So thankful for you and your constituents educating us back to health!

DR Can you please do a video directed on the difference with women and men and a carnivore diet? Hormonal changes eating higher fatty meats, should women eat more lean meats or stick to higher fatty fish and lean beef, ect. I have done mostly ribeyes for a month on carnivore and love it but not losing any weight and still have 100lbs or so to lose.
