Great video. You can't overstate the park system enough. Not only do we have the river, but there is an amazing greater river park system! On both sides of the river you can find biking and walking trails, river access, and the occasional ruins (if you are adventurous). The architecture also can't be overstated. I don't feel like the fan district and museum districts got their due attention in this video (maybe because the houses are more expensive). There is NOTHING more pleasant than taking a late Springtime stroll through the fan and museum district and admiring all the cute little landscaped front yards, people watching, and architecture admiring. As much as I want Richmond city to remain a hidden gem, I want to invite people looking for a great place to live to come check it out!

I was born and raised in city of Richmond in the 80s. I remember Wonder Bread factory making bread. I also remember the old Virginia State Penitentiary where the WW2 memorial is at now. I moved out of the state almost 14 years now. When ever I visit family and friends I don’t go downtown anymore because they changed everything.

Thanks for this. I graduated high school in Newport News, college at VCU, lived in Williamsburg and Charlottesville for school and work, and spent the last many years in DC and its suburbs. Ever since VCU, I've been to Richmond a few times a year to visit friends. I expect to retire there in about 4 years -- my DC-area retirement will go much farther in Richmond. I'm glad you highlighted the cultural events in Richmond; some of your competitors don't. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is one of the crowns of the city, and there are many other locations for anyone interested in history or the arts.

I was in Richmond during the 80s and found this video to be a most helpful update. I didn’t realize how extensive the revitalization has been over the years. When I visit, I generally see friends and stick to old haunts. Thinking to move back to VA from the west coast and Richmond is definitely on my list, as is the VA Beach area. Thanks!

@@AlexZ-lc6nl The high crime rate that keeps going up , the ever increasing taxes, poor roads and street lights, the destruction of our historical landmarks, and a general "dirty " feeling of the city, that's become one large ghetto. It has nothing going for it. The city council and the mayor are completely incompetent. I would have compared Richmond to Charleston or Savannah a decade ago. Now its like Detroit.

They promoted rioting looting and burning in the city because the city councils handlers wanted it. It's an extremely corrupt city. Has been for a long time. Hardly anyone in Virginia takes it seriously and stays away from it. Some of those who grew up in the city like it and its history but the woke crowd controls it and it's a mess.

Hi! The ‘burbs of Richmond are filled with all sorts of folks that are at varied phases of their lives. That’s what’s makes it such a great area. There is always something going on , no matter the time of year. No need to go into the city for fun , culture , or good food and drinks- countless clubs, dog parks, eateries , wineries, volunteer organizations, classes, recreation opportunities, etc. in the ‘burbs.

Anything south of semmes/forest hill blvd, west of 195, east of Chimborazo, north of Brookland park blvd ... Is not Richmond.. although lakeside is a rare and nice exception. Outside of those boundaries, it's typical car land American suburbs .. booo! On the other hand, the downtown is amazing because you don't have to contend with tourism and traffic and annoying crowds like most cities. Hopefully that doesn't change. We don't want it to change. We like it small here. Don't turn rva into another destination for the transient elite Americans who jack up housing costs when they turn their big city equity into our small town misery. And Lily pad used to be cool before it totally sold out for the masses and money and turned a nice neighborhood dive bar into a major tourist and suburbanite trap. Check out 8:30 for a more authentic Richmond experience and honestly the best fish n chips in rva. Go small or go home!

Hi, This video was informative and valuable. I've lived in Seattle for seven years as an artist, and while it's beautiful, it's not for me because Richmond isn't like Seattle, Washington's people have changed since COVID-19, and Richmond is friendlier. I grew up in NYC and had family in Gettysburg and Williamsburg in the 1980s, but I last went there a while ago. One of my acquaintances in Falls Church enjoys living there. I would have to prepare a lot, but your list and information were helpful, and the city seemed lovely with its airport, train, walkways, parks, and courting potential- and not a transportation calamity! I like downtown, provided it's not too gentrified, with poorly built new buildings, etc. I love riding my electric scooter and driving sometimes since I don't drive much and regularly fly domestically and internationally. I'd want to know about the people's kindness, medical facilities, and doctors' quality. I'm far from moving, but for the first time, this city appears like a lovely "hidden gem" in the East without terrible weather. I am gathering information on moving to Richmond. Thank you!

People move to Richmond for James River and Breweries? Unbelieable. People move due to job change for the most part to Richmond and other neighboring cities. Do not use James River as a carrot for people's relocation to Richmond. Talk about good school districts,, quieter/safer neighborhood, few good companies, et al. I had moved to the Richmond area 22 years ago due to a job change to Glen Allen area and bought a home in a good school district to raise my children. By the way, I have not visited James River and any brewery/winery that you are talking about.

Two things you mentioned, I’m not allowed to comment on but the 3rd, you’re absolutely right. We’ve really enjoyed the river as well as many other rivers and waterways in VA. Being able to be on a mountain stream or at the Chesapeake Bay in 2 hours or less is really nice for us.
@gravisha

@@LIVINGINRICHMOND Rivers are not a selling point for people's relocation. It's primarily due to job change that people move in. I am one of them. Yes, we do have James River (which I've not visited other than having a glimpse of it while driving) and touristy spots like VA Beach, Chesapeake Bay and Shenandoah/Blueridge Parkway within a two-hour drive. But these are just the frills. It's not because of these people move in. I've travelled and lived in CA, NM, FL, OH, TX, KS, WI, Northern VA and I like all of them but I chose Glen Allen area for low cost of living besides great school district and quite neighborhood.

7 Reasons NOT to move to Richmond: 1. Toll Booths - continually paying money to drive on roads that are strewn with potholes - too much "New Jersey- like". 2. Traffic & Rude drivers - go ahead - look it up- VA always makes the top 10 list for some of the " rudest" drivers...combine that with heavy traffic. & you got a recipe for disaster. 3. Urban Decay - just get off the parkway, and start going 360 east...you will witness some of the most depressing sites, as windows are boarded up & doors are padlocked.padlocks. 4. Crime - murder, drugs, theft, vandalism, etc...Richmond is simply a microcosm of bigger, democrat- controlled cities. 5. Taxes & Regulations - even before arriving in Richmond, all you have to do is cross the state line to get overwhelmed with a " choking & stifling" feeling : fasten seat belts, radar detectors illegal, Speed Limits Enforced By aircraft- what a JOKE. 6. Lack of Southern Charm - just because you take down confederate monuments doesn't mean that you cannot wave to a neighbor driving by ..... 7 Too Far From NC - where ALL Richmonders go for REAL bbq & REAL beaches...

For state starters, how about going back to the ( much prettier) state " welcome" sign that was blue with a cardinal & dogwood - hate the hideous black signs. Then, under the big blue sign could be a smaller one that says Virginia Is For Suckers...oops...meant Lovers 😆. As for Richmond...oh boy...I remember some of the older generation talking about how downtown used to be with Thalheimers and Miller & Rhodes - when it was "safe" to go there....oh boy....

As for the bbq & seafood, there is NO comparison ! One weekend I challenge anyone in Richmond to get up early, get on I-95 SOUTH, get off the HWY 70 exit at Smithfield/ Selma, and go EAST. When you get to Goldsboro, try Wilbers bbq or McCall's bbq & seafood across the road if you like to eat both 🐖 😋 🐟 😋. Then continue on 70 east towards the beautiful beach of Emerald Isle...even try a bbq & shrimp plate at Moores bbq in Morehead City. After doing this you will NEVER be the same! Oh...almost forgot...while at Emerald Isle, check out all the VA license plates 😆 😆. Those stupid " front" license plates 😠...

Its a shame that all the history is gone (all the statues) because of 1 man going to prison 8 time and putting a gun to a pregnant women but no one says anything about that VERY SAD but the City politicians need the votes

Richmond is not Mid Atlantic, it's a definitely Southern city , but it's decaying rapidly, crime ridden, and all the major historical sites are demolished. Its fast becoming a Southern Detroit. So I don't see any positives. I don't think it will ever come back. My family is old Richmond and we are desiring to move to VA Beach.

Richmond manages to combine the most negative aspects of the Northeast and the worst of the South. Its like Memphis meets Newark. If you like Southern rudeness and a decaying city that destroyed historical landmarks, move here. If you want Southern charm, move elsewhere in Virginia.

Absolutely right ! One of the BEST things that could happen to Richmond is that DC would relocate to San Francisco where it BELONGS...then & only then perhaps Richmond reclaim her Southern Charm

Lol,translate this comment to mean this,my opinion. Destroying historical landmark, someone who is bitter about the Confederate monuments coming down, really?More Southern charm translates to more older politically conservative people who miss the days of the "Old South" with segregation and Jim Crow, smh.Modern, progressive RVA is not going back to any of that sort of thing...

When I see people say Richmond is bad for taking down (Confederate) monuments or "awful crime", I almost like the city more! Usually these people complaining aren't the kind of people you want in your city anyways ;) a little too right wing for me

Hindus are members of a religion, not an ethnicity. But you are right in that there's a sizable community from India, as well as from Pakistan, Iran, Armenia and a few from various parts of the Near, Middle, and Far East, as well as from Africa, Asia, Latin America and Spain (though not yet as main streamed as in California say), some Europeans, and a good number of Americans of various ethnicities and from different states that have relocated here. Unfortunately, some drivers are rude and unpredictable and do dangerous sudden things like turning left from a right lane or double park not caring that they're putting others at risk of getting hit or that there's a spot to park right next to them and race and zigzag on the streets and highways. This is surprising given the small size of the city. Richmond has improved some in terms of food. 18 years ago you couldn't get decent bread and Mexican and Chinese food was awful! Now there's an abundance of decent bakeries and a couple of good Chinese and authentic Mexican places. But the restaurant scene though abundant in numbers doesn't live up to the hype in terms of quality and is often inconsistent. There are some good restaurants but a lot seem to have a very limited and traditional southern palate and be very meat oriented and pricey. Even the ones that are supposed to be French or Italian are seriously lacking in authenticity, variety, and flavor. And, though I'm not vegetarian, we need more affordable places with vegetarian food and regular restaurants with interesting vegetarian options. Right now we only have a couple casual ones and though they're not outrageously expensive they're not cheap either. The only cheap food is usually barbecue or burgers and isn't very healthy. But the river is beautiful, the museums and festivals great and the population becoming more diverse and interesting. Crime has gone up a fair bit but I think that's a national trend in many cities and has more to do with an extreme and unjust distribution of wealth and tax breaks for the wealthy. Though it's still worrisome and getting scary in some central areas. I wanted to try the Pulse from the arts district at 4pm a couple of weeks ago and Broad st. felt so unsafe and shady even in daylight that I had to quickly walk south to Franklin and get a Lyft there and I've lived in Oakland California and in Barcelona and Mexico City and traveled to other countries in Europe alone and I'm not easily scared. Finally whoever "manages" street repairs either doesn't have a clue or doesn't exist. There are often multiple streets in the same direction blocked at the same time which makes a drive that would normally take 15 minutes take 25. Also recently their solution for everything is a roundabout in streets that are far too narrow for it. Examples: the street from Rocket's Landing to Dock street before the Ship lock park and several in Church hill north of Broad, e.g. on Jefferson. Too many potholes except in the wealthiest neighborhoods, food deserts, and with only a couple of exceptions in the wealthy neighborhoods low quality public schools in the rest. There's a huge shortage of teachers right now. Although that too is a national trend caused by low salaries, large class size, lack of appreciation for education and crazy ignorant extreme right wing people forcing their agenda on teachers and putting them in impossible situations with no support.
