‘It smells like yard work.’ 😂😂😂 yes native plant mojito videos 😂 that would be so much fun (for us, not sure how much you and hubs would enjoy! 😉) Great video, I’m loving your channel!

When I first bought my house in Northern Illinois five years ago, I knew I wanted to replace as much grass as possible with wildlife-supporting garden beds. I planted oak trees and native shrubs. Not familiar with native perennials, I bought several preplanned native kits from Prairie Nursery. Every year, I add more plugs or direct sow more seeds into bare spots...seeing what grows and which ones I prefer. It's definitely not as tidy-looking as my neighbors' sterile lawn-obsessed yards, but I (and the wildlife!) love it. Your channel is a God-send.

I love the idea of making mojitos with everything in the mint family! Do that! Also you should buy a food dehydrator because they are practical and awesome. They’re a really easy way to deal with fall harvest excess.

Thanks for this comment! I have really been putting off getting the dehydrator... 😂🌱🌱🌱

Love it! I've been trying to find native red flowers to attract hummingbirds and I never thought of Monarda. I have every shade EXCEPT red! I will be on the lookout for some red ones now.

There are even new cultivars of monarda that work in rock mulch beds - I've been using one called Upscale Red Velvet that gives all the good vibes of 'Jacob cline' or 'fireball' without the lodging or spreading issues. Working in the landscape design field, there are ways to get these crucial plants into people's rock mulch barrens - in the west the weed fabric is a necessary evil to overcome.

That's amazing, what a tough genus monarda is! 🌱🌱🌱

🤣 haha love this one! Yes, I can attest that it's better if you give it room. I made the mistake of planting mine right next to wild bergamot! Yeah the wild bergamot took it over pretty much. 😅

I grew up in rural mexico, most of the teas we drank were made from fresh leaves simmered directly in water, no dehydration involved. I bet it tastes much different from fresh.

I work in a garden center and get requests for “deer proof” plants all the time. People are always disappointed when I inform them that deer will eat anything if they’re hungry enough, even if it tastes horrible lol.

i have a deep raspberry / almost fuchsia colored monarda blooming right now in my yard!! It was a shock to see how squishy and soft the flowers are, i always thought they were much harder and firmer
@gryphonrampant15 ай бұрын
I'm wondering if the microwave drying messed with the flavor. I'd expect the complaint to be "it tastes like pasta sauce tea" rather than "it tastes like compost." Monarda species typically have some of the same flavor compounds as oregano. I've used dehydrator-dried monarda didyma in casserole to add an italian seasonings vibe.

I made herbal tea last year with fresh leaves. I grabbed a little bit of whatever leaves looked good. My favorite version was when the bee balm had just started to bloom. It gave it that earl grey flavor. But within a week the flavor of the leaves wasn’t so nice anymore.
@lisalikesplants5 ай бұрын
Interesting! That makes sense because leaves do tend to get bitter after a plant flowers, I've had that happen with basil. Thanks for sharing! 🌱🌱🌱

Another fabulous video - love the taste test at the end. I want to have a lovely lush bee balm, but mine tends to be a bit spindly and sparse! Maybe in time it'll fill out! 🤞🏼

so when do you deadhead the blooms to get more flowers? When there are no more little flowers at all? Thx
@lisalikesplants3 ай бұрын
I only cut them back in maybe late May if they are getting very tall. Deadheading is very hit or miss with this plant as far as getting a second bloom, so I wouldn't deadhead.

A common name for this plant is Oswego Tea. The story is after the Boston Tea Party people still wanted to drink tea, so guess what they turned to. You guessed it, Monarda didyma. Greetings from Oswego. ;-)

Great video…. However, the white rabbit is not a wild bunny. I rescue and rehabilitate Eastern cottontails and Snowshoe Hares. I also rescue and live with domestic rabbits. Seeing a domestic bunny outside means that they have been dumped (or not well-cared for, if they have a family) Thank you for the excellent bee balm info.

Thanks for the correction! I got these stock videos not really knowing much about rabbits. I hope I get more footage of the bunnies in my yard this year!

I don't get it... When I was a kid... my grandmother, my nana, would send us out into the courtyard to collect the scraggiliest mint from between the slabs of sidewalk. She would just rip and maybe twist it and throw it into a pot of water on the stovetop. It was great. ...Why dry it?

NOOOOO...don't dry them in the microwave - it kills every beneficial property. Dry them on paper towels or the sweater-drying mesh hanging things (sorry, can't think of the name right now).
@lisalikesplants5 ай бұрын
That's a good idea! I didn't have the time to dry them properly and they are pretty juicy, that's why I think they tasted bad! 😂
