Roosters are kinda like hens but with a rooster they’ll try to mate with anything that’s remotely hen shaped but most times they’ll be as chill as a cucumber. Sometimes roosters will do some of the funniest things like roosting in a odd place, sun bathing in a weird way, sometimes crowing in a funny way, and pick fights with a mirror or anything that they deem as a challenge

We had a hen wander into our yard. We live in a city. She really seems to like it here and has adopted us. I have no idea if I should be feeding her or letting her just scratch and forage. I gave her some corn and peas, and now she follows me around the yard. Not so good when I cross the street, though. She wants to follow me there. I have no idea what to do with a chicken.

I think it’s a very uplifting sound …the crack of dawn and another beautiful day , sound Anyways , those couple chickens ..we’ll let’s just say …they sure can multiply and multiply , But Ive really started getting attached , and I see them as pets , not chicken dumplings ! We couldn't do much since it already had an owner and it was stuck to a leash, but man we got along well! I think we bonded for 30 minutes. One time it but its mouth on my hand while I was trying to pet it and I was kinda scared. I also held the chicken and man it was SOO CUTE! even if it wasn't a baby chicken, I loved it so much and now I'm begging my parent's for a chicken. I'll update this story if my parent's do or do not buy us a pet chicken

I was wondering what would be the best breed for a person that is just starting out with their first pet chicken? As well is it better to start off with a chick?
@bwelmhouse18 ай бұрын
That depends on where you live and what the climate is like. Also depends on what your set up will be, like whether they're free ranging or will spend their entire lives in a coop/run. I would NOT recommend starting off with chicks if you've never had chickens before. You need some experience with chickens first before having chicks. Chicks require a special setup. You'll want to research the proper setup and care for chicks. Adults or at least chickens of 6 months of age require less care than chicks, but still require proper care. Either way, do some research on how to properly care for chickens and the proper setups. They aren't the easiest animals to keep, but not terribly difficult either. They get sick very easily and you have to know how to properly treat them. They also have specific feed requirements and their living quarters have to be kept clean and secure from predators.
@lnxjennАй бұрын
I would start with point of lay hens, as chicks are a lot of work and supervision. POL are not quite laying but usually start within a month of receiving them. You can prescribe with POL and then work your way to more and other aspects of chicken raising.

I heard that chickens laying eggs every day is very taxing for their bodies, and that it's recommended to feed the eggs back to the chickens, or stop them from making eggs. Is that correct?
@bwelmhouse12 ай бұрын
I've honestly never heard that. They have evolved to lay eggs every day. There'd be no evolutionary advantage to develop a propensity to do something that isn't good for them. In fact, it's a bad thing to interfere with what they do naturally. It's also not good to feed them their own eggs. They'll develop a taste for their own eggs and they'll be inclined to eat them every time they lay them, leaving you with no eggs. That's why feed stores sell fake eggs to put in the nesting boxes so that it will discourage them from eating their eggs. A chicken needs to keep their reproductive process going. Anything that interferes with their egg laying can make them very sick or even kill them. They're naturally meant to be egg factories.

Yes, but not every day. I'm susceptible to it because it is a disorder and that's how my brain is wired, but I've done enough exposure therapy that most everyday situations are not a problem. I still have some anxiety when driving certain places or being in certain situations where I feel trapped.

I'm planning on getting chickens, but I've heard that laying eggs every day isn't especially healthy for them. I think I'll use suprelorin to cut back on the egg production. Do you know anything about this I should know?
@bwelmhouse1 Жыл бұрын
That's definitely not true. You should NOT be trying to force your chickens to lay less eggs. In fact, you might harm them by doing that. Chickens that lay eggs every day or at least consistently, is a sign of a healthy chicken. Here are some sources with information: www.purinamills.com/chicken-feed/education/detail/how-long-do-chickens-lay-eggs-goals-for-laying-hens#:~:text=D.&text=Consistent%20egg%20production%20is%20a,an%20egg%20almost%20daily%20thereafter. petkeen.com/do-chickens-lay-eggs-everyday/ You really shouldn't be interfering with your chicken's ovulation. Just feed them properly and provide an ideal, clean, comfortable and stress-free environment with plenty of space for them and allow them to lay their eggs as often as they want to.
