I had a maltese and she was easy to train and a very outgoing dog...she loved camping and taking long walks in the park or on the beach...she was very smart and our time together, just a few months shy of 13 years ....was too short. She has been gone now over seven years, but never to be forgotten ❤. We also recently lost our Bischon poo this past July 28th. He lived 16.6 years with us and we were blessed to have him. ❤ We now have a puppy 14 weeks old....He is a Malshi ....a Maltese and a ShihTzu....we love him so much❤ Dogs are awesome.

I have had Maltese’s for 30 years. They are a wonderful breed. They are sweet, they are affectionate, and they are very very smart. They are easy to train, and house break. My dog only barks when the doorbell rings, or someone knocks on the door. She is not a yapper in any way. I’ve had many dogs, but this breed is at the top of my list.

My Maltese does not yap at all… he’s actually the most quiet dog I’ve ever owned. He does get hot easier if his coat is longer, cold no problem. But he is a house dog as all of them should be. He is groomed every 8 weeks which is not a problem. I’d prefer the grooming over excessive shedding. I lose more hair than he does. I’ve never seen him shed a hair. He is very clingy so I never have to use a leash. He is the best baby ever with no behavior issues. He is very smart, content, and VERY low maintenance. If I had to choose a home for a Maltese it would be for a mature committed adult that is home more than not just because your pup will get lonely and the Maltese is very loyal and clingy to it’s owner. They are smart and will make you feel guilty if left for long periods. Grooming is a must to avoid matting. Otherwise this pup is a fabulous breed. I’ve had every breed pretty much and my Maltese has been the easiest, cleanest in the house, smartest, most loyal, just all around perfect companion.

I owned a Maltese once and while I didn't exactly consider her a quiet dog, I did consider her a considerate dog. She could get yappy, but if I simply calmly asked her to quiet down, she would, immediately. She just wanted to let me know about the thing that was worth barking at, and once I assured her I knew, she settled right down.

Regarding the question about the bladder of a Maltese: my Maltese could easily hold it over the night when she was only 6 months old. And in general: I grew up with lots of dogs from different breeds, the Maltese is among the smartest and has an extraordinary easygoing character. There is just the thing with barking, she just can't hold it in in some situations, like a reflex impossible to control. But she knows if I don't like it and then she just walks out of the situation that makes her bark. Very lovely dog. And I once belonged to those people that didn't consider this breed as a real dog at all.

If you have problems with your Maltese, you probably just need a different style of dog. Mine is my best buddy and has no barking or matting issues,. He was a breeze to housebreak. He's my daily source of sanity and is incredibly loyal. He learned the normal sounds I make when I get up, stretch, lay down, etc - so now he makes those same sounds when he does those things. I wouldn't trade my Maltese for all the tea in China.

You're not wrong, however, I love talkative animals. I will admit my late Maltese Sophia had 0 training, but she was a good dog. The separation anxiety, grooming, being a shadow, and tripping everyone up were my only issues. Besides that, she came potty trained and was honestly my little sister and best friend. When we were kidnapped together she watched over me and made sure the people who took us didn't come close to me(she understood the situation because the same people stole her before). She was also extremely healthy to the point that cancer didn't show up on her blood work. Plus, she was loving towards all animals, especially her cat siblings. A Maltese is not for anyone who wants an easy dog, but they are awesome little balls of fluff who stay playful and happy till the end... She was MY first dog and honestly, it was the best most wonderful experience. And I'm a cat person. Everyone loved her. Even people who were afraid of dogs would send her gifts. In short Maltese are awesome, but I don't recommend them to busy or novice owners.

Another thing to remember is that not every dog is the same, my Maltese likes sleeping and won’t be a nuisance unless you annoy him but besides that and him barking at every he’s a good well behaved dog. My family didn’t want a Maltese dog and likes the black lab breed more but my dog was kind of in need as he was found by my dad wandering the streets as a stray dog and we decided to adopt him because he didn’t have an owner apparently and I’m guessing he was probably a reject. But yea we’ve had him since 2018 and he’s been great.

I got my maltese at 8 weeks old. He was yappy then, but with training, he doesn't do it anymore unless talked to. He plays outside all the time. He does his potty outside with no problem at all. I can leave him alone at home when I do grocery shopping during winter with no problem. You just have to train them from puppy hood, which is needed whether you have a maltese or another breed

I am a 8 year experienced programmer, and I love making projects. My Maltese was def my most interesting project, ranking amongst my several year long game developments, apps etc. To me it is like a child, and there are downsides to human children too, but that doesn’t change the fact that it is still a cute adorable dog. I treated it like code. But you teach it by training rather than using the keyboard. I don’t regret buying it at all, in fact I’m only sad I didn’t get another one!

I have a Morkie- half Maltese half yorkie named Sadie. She looks like a maltese. I have videos of her on my channel which shows that she’s pretty well behaved. Sadie is a sweetheart. She is such a great dog. Yeah she barks whenever the doorbell rings or at some strangers but isn’t that most dogs? I also adopted a second dog (yorkie) so they both have a buddy. For most part I’m home. But when i have to run errands with no one is home, they are fine. Having a second dog definitely helps - You should never leave your dog alone outside. Even a large breed. Large Dogs also can get attacked by other animals. I grew up with two labs. I had a large backyard with woods behind it. One day, they got out of the fence, and cocoa was hit by a car driven by my neighbor. We rushed him to the vet and Luckily he was okay. But it was very scary. Things happened. Also, people have been stealing other people’s dogs out of their yards. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR DOG UNATTENDED. - You should walk your dog several times a day; regardless of breed. Maltese are very energetic. And it helps them burn energy by walking them. Also, they require exercise like all of us. It’s also good for the owner too.

I have a maltichon and he is (more or less) house trained and we taught him to ring a bell to get outside. But he is very hard to train for things like sit, stay etc. unless there is actual food on offer in which case he will obey up to a point. He is a yappy little bastard but can cope with some separation but will follow us around like we're being haunted by a ghost dog. We burned through several dog minders fed up that he wouldn't settle at night or be quiet. After that we started developing a routine where he went to bed in a room of his own at night and despite scratching and yapping that went on for a few weeks he got used to it. Routine is the best way to calm him down and we've noticed that if we leave the house he is pretty fine about it although can get overexcited if he sees people passing, rabbits in the garden or whatever.

These are hardly reasons why you shouldn't own a Maltese. I've raised two Maltese dogs that have since passed away; one I had to put to sleep after 16 years just months ago. What I wouldn't give to hear her bark once more. Both my dogs hardly barked unless the doorbell rang or they were playing. My heart aches just thinking about my dog Tipsy (she'd walk around like she was drunk all the time). All the maintenance such as the expensive vet bills, cooking healthy food for them, grooming them myself (KZbin), and raising them is nothing compared to the unconditional love and appreciation you receive in return. My dogs used to sleep with me and I haven't slept the same since I had to let Tipsy go.

OMG, I loved all three of my maltese. My first one I took to work with me to socialize her. My third one baby sat my granddaughter. She stayed right on the pillow with her. I became so attached that it was terrible when each passed away. I have their ashes. I am looking for another one now.

I have a maltese, he is sooo adorable, the only thing thats true is being clingy, which i like and makes me feel loved by him :) . He is the most silent dog we ever had, except for strangers, not incessantly as described here, other negatives mentioned in the video are all very manageable. So it really depends how you keep your doggie. You wont regret having a maltese!!

I have a Maltese and it's all about training them early. He knows he's not allowed to bark inside so he has a little inside murmer he does instead. We taught him early on stay home alone and he's fine on his own all day, he poops on his puppy pad and taught himself to pee in the shower. I could go on all day what a good boy he is. Train them from day one and you'll be good.

I rescued a darling maltese x from drowning. She was 9 years old. It was obvious that she must have been abused, a broken rib, that just stuck out. Within a week she learned her new name, knew to ask to go outside for her pee and poo, she hardly barked, played with our big dogs. She gave us 5 years of pure joy. She was such a sweet, precious child. Unfortunately she got a heart condition and the medication could not be increased. We had to set her little spirit free. What she gave us was more than we could describe.

I am a "glass is half empty kind of guy" but, my gosh! You probably should have presented this information as "The pros and cons of owning a Maltese." A lot of this information is accurate but in my opinion, the joy a Maltese can bring to a family far exceeds any negatives. I got two Maltese puppies in 2010. I lost one to cancer in 2011. This was heart breaking. The other one is 14 years old and still acts like a puppy. She is lovable, bossy, playful, and one of the best dogs I have ever had. They are great dogs!

Trusty Tyler was pad trained. When visiting other houses all we had to do was put down a pad and show him where it was. Never made a mess. Yes, very brave. Very rarely took him outside but he got away. Once ran into a pasture and was in a standoff with a cow. Another time chased a deer into the woods.

He is very quiet. I take him to restaurants, to movies, to take trains, to post office, to supermarkets, to banks, to lawyer’s office……you name it, he is always very quiet, makes no sounds. No one would even know his inside my bag and sits beside me. He sleeps next to me, he give me different signal for wanting drinking water, wanting eating food, wanting go to bathroom. Once he had diarrhea, needed go to bathroom, he shake my shoulders to wake me up, when I put him on the floor, he ran into bathroom, did not cause any messy. He is sweet, he is soft, he is lovely. When we walk on the streets, we always got people taking picture of him. I really don’t know your Maltese, but mine is totally love of my life.

My dog only barks out of excitement and seeing other dogs but she never barks 24/7, rn she’s laying beside me on the bed and it looks so comfortable how she lays down 😭!! She’s a great dog for comfort and perfect for children. She never bites unless she feels threatened or hurt and my nephew will literally chase her around or lay his head on her and hug her and she’s never bothered! He literally shares his food with her which might be a problem because she isn’t supposed to eat table scraps, anywho she’s an amazing sweet and adorable doggo friend and she will never be compared to annoying, aggressive or anything else!!

This video truly is spot on. My Maltese does not go potty outside and only uses training pads. I preferred not to train him for outdoor potty. I've had him almost ten years. I take him most everywhere with me and when going inside some place, he is in his little house (carrier). He is a watch dog of sorts because he will bark if someone knocks on the door, if he sees the mailman, hears an unfounded sound and that is good for me. He will generally stop marking once I say 'it's the neighbors' or 'it's ok'. I've never ever let him outside without me and he is always on a leash outdoors. Maltese do often have throat issues, especially as they age. Most noticeable when they get excited.

Very cute and great for apartment city life but at times i wish I had considered other breeds like my boyfriend said to do. But I never had children so if you want an eye opening to raising a kid get a Maltese puppy 😂 Also the not peeing or pooping outside is true too I try walking him twice a day but he’s stuck in his ways on using the bathroom on his wee wee pads and even tries to go at others houses when there is no wee wee pad 😅

From late teens to early 30's had low maintenance Great Danes - all friendly and trained as guard dogs. First small dog was a Shi tzu/Terrier - trained to work with Autistic children and adults so silent, obedient, calm and affectionate. Again, low maintenance as never needed to brush and l cut the hair myself which took about 6 minutes per month. Looked like a permanent puppy. All my small dogs have passports and trained to be ok with all modes of transport, and be left in kennels or alone in hotels or friends homes, etc. In the wild dogs do not bark , it is humans who required dogs to bark for guarding ,protection etc. Now 2 Maltese pups which l've had for 11 days . 1 is silent and the other practically there😅 Plan to comb them once a week and intend to trim their hair short myself so keeping in with low maintenance. If a dog or cat has behavior problems / bad habits - it's generally the owner(s) fault 😊

I'm thinking of getting a Maltese puppy. I'd like to keep its hair short for hygiene reasons. How often would I have to take it to the salon for a hair cut? Also, can I avoid the tear stains by having its face shaved as well? It may sound like a stupid question, but every Maltese I see with a puppy cut, it still seems to have a lot of hair around the eyes.

@@likmijnreet4542 I guess it depends from owner to owner… I usually give my dog a haircut twice in a year. But I think 3 times a year i.e once in every 4 months will be ideal. Brushing it daily is a must. You should probably avoid shaving the face, I mean that will make your Maltese really ugly.
