I have a coatie (long stock or double coat). Also known as LSHs. They’re pretty darned similar to their shorter haired brethren except they need more frequent grooming (preferably daily instead of weekly) to prevent mats. They may need a hygiene trim and/or pads trimmed. Most GSDs, regardless of coat type, will tend to be clever, loyal, one-person, opinionated, strong willed, destructive when bored, and in need of daily physical and mental stimulation. Most will need some sort of job or they’ll invent their own. All will need training throughout their lives and supervision to prevent them learning things you’d rather they didn’t know like unlocking and opening doors, or locking you out. I had one who kept turning up the air conditioner because she was hot and another who liked using speed dial. This video addressed issues with GSDs in general but not specifically with LSHs (langstockhaar or long double coated GSDs). My coatie needs daily brushing, a bath every two weeks, and a silicone coat product to make him a little resistant to leaves, twigs and other debris sticking to him. There’s a reason why he gets called “Swiffer.”

Oh yeah they shed for sure! A daily brushing is a must

Mine just goes to the Groomers every so often for the full treatment. The vaccuuming is horrendous. He seems to shed all year. I love him to bits. He's my cuddle bear. He's incredibly sweet-natured and trustworthy, which is lucky because strangers always want to pat him.

I have had German Shepherds for 30 years and a long-haired German Shepherd for nine years. All dogs were my best friends, but my long-haired German Shepherd is an angel on earth, that should explain it all.

My dad had longhaired gsd, for 9 years. He died 1999, some 10 years ltr i got myself female gsd, longhaired but she was never half of the dog he was. I lived her regardless but never like him. After her i don't want another cause i realized i will compare every dog to him and no one will ever be like him. But i always look at photos of longhaired gsd and sometimes the wish to have one gets me again, but for short time. Longhaired gsd will forever be my perfect dog so whoever thinks about getting one, go ahead. You will not regret it. Only problem is, they are unforgetable

I have a two year old female long haired German Shepherd and she is the best dog I’ve ever had. We live on Pittsburgh’s Northside and she is the Queen of the Northside!!! She is very friendly with kids and strangers. However, she tries to attract other dogs so the dog park is out!!! She has to play alone. She has tried to bite 2 or 3 different people and im not sure if she sensed something was off?! She loves frisbee and catches every one unless I throw it wrong. She loves the water the most. Queen Maddy

Why are these reasons not to get a long-haired German shepherd when a short haired German Shepherd is basically all the same reasons this should’ve just been about German Shepherd dog in general. (momma of a long-hair male and short-hair female)

I have a 2 1/2 year old long haired GSD. Best dog I’ve ever owned, they are not like short hairs, they are friendlier and are medium drive. They do need training however. Mine has had two years of training and is now my service dog. Be prepared to get off your butt and walk them. They need it.

Just cause it’s the long haired GSD it’s better than the short coats for personality wise. I have three short coats and one long haired it just depends on the personality not the length of coat

My daughter and son in law got a long haired GS. They travel alot, so I told them start bringing him over as a pup so we get used to each other. We live in the country so walks, being outside when we are and fetch is an always at our house, he is such a good boy. They live in the city and when we visit all he does is pace. It's weird.

Ok, honestly… I wish I could work from home all the time but I can’t. What if they get long walks in the morning before work?

It's all about training. I have 2 lc solid black GSD working class ( not slant back). Start training as a puppy they are mouthy we call them land sharks. Don't let them get away with it and socialize them. Walk them lots. I take my 2 outside after work and we play ball for about 1 hour before dinner and some after. They are happy healthy and they have jobs around the house. My house is still standing and intact lol

Why did you specifically state Long Haired German Shepherd? The information that you list is for the German Shepherd breed period. Grooming is the stand out difference between short coated and long haired shepherds, which was not stated once!
@janberman85622 жыл бұрын
This is for all German Shepherds ! It is rediculous to single out Long Haired Shepherds! The exact same thing goes for both types! This seems to be a rather week attempt by someone , possibly short coat breeders to make the long haired shepherds less desirable! Just remove the words Long Hair throughout and the video will be accurate and true!

I'm on my second long-haired German Shepherd. They're the best dogs ever. The only down-side is the vaccuuming. My current one is intelligent, loyal, friendly to strangers, or to go to the shops, where people always want to pat him, he's beautiful to look at, easy for the groomers to deal with, sweet-natured, cuddly, has a menacing bark so is a good guard-dog but is no risk to children or toddlers or other dogs. I adore him and trust him, even with babies. He'll sit quietly with me for hours and isn't demanding or destructive. When he passes away, I'll be buying another.
