In 1974 I was at Sportmans Park in Chicago for the night racing card and spotted Rickles at a table nearby with his wife and another couple. I wanted to say hello and have him sign my program but I figured I better get a few insults ready to fling at him in case he started in on me. (I would retort with: "Did you get a lollipop with that haircut?") Anyway, I stopped by with my program in hand and politely told him how much I enjoyed his work. He offered me a seat to join them, asked me who I liked in the next race, signed my program, offered to buy me a drink. I thanked him for the autograph, declined on joining them (that really would have been imposing), and left with even more respect for him than ever before. He was a consummate pro and all-around great guy. There'll never be another like him.

Amazing, great comedy without dirty jokes and profanity. It's called, "talent."

When I was a kid I used to watch these roasts with my dad. We laughed so much especially when Rickles came on.

They were all great actors and comedians very sadly missed today with the quality of entertainment they brought to the screen. Today's entertainment on TV just doesn't come close. Doesn't even cut it.

Absolutely no dig on Foster Brooks, amazing. Some real respect going on there.
@albertpeterson55854 жыл бұрын
...Don knew that Foster was going to something, but he had no idea that he was going to go THERE; cheating with his wife, over at his house, drinking his scotch, eating his pretzels, and the Velveeta out of the fridge; laughing at Don with his wife with the sound off; Don never knew THAT was coming, and neither did the entire dais.

@@albertpeterson5585 If I'm not mistaken, everyone roasts Don Rickles, then he gets the last word. So, his graciousness towards Foster Brooks was after Brooks roasted him good.
@albertpeterson55853 жыл бұрын
@@RoninTXBR549 ...Don said: "everyone was simply awful, except for the drunk, who was simply charming."; Don had no way of upstageing Foster, so he didn't even try; and, from Don, that is the ultimate respect.
