In this video we test the performance of OpenFOAM in WSL.
Back in 2022
The testcase is the Drivaer benchmark model and we used OpenFOAM 9.
The steps described in this video are valid with Windows 11 and WSL 2.

A bit of a warning to anyone who tries to run this case on OF11 - Please do not!!! There were so many drastic changes introduced in OF11 that I was unable to go past the mesh generation phase. A million errors later I gave up and installed the OF9. A very nice an super-educational tutorial. Thanks a lot Wolf!!!

Those are simple estimates coming from turbulence modeling theory. You can use any relation available in the literature, for example, www.afs.enea.it/project/neptunius/docs/fluent/html/ug/node238.htm

Hi, thank you for the helpful video. I have one question regarding running OpenFOAM via WSL on a Windows machine. I am thinking of buying a workstation. But I am not too familiar with ubuntu OS. So I just wondering what the limitation or difference when running OpenFOAM in WSL windows and pure ubuntu machines is?

Pretty much is the same. Maybe, the difference is that you don't have a native windows manager but it can be installed with no problem. In my personal experience, you get the same performance with WSL (or dockers) and you don't need to partition the hard drive. So go for WSL.
