I never give thumbs up to KZbin videos, but this one was packed with extremely useful content. Loudness normalization is one of the main reasons I'm switching to Resolve (I have to manually monitor and adjust in Premiere). Thank you for all the great tips!

I actually use the Loudness Normalization check box in the Effects Tab in the export window of Media Encoder or Premiere. Click on the Effects tab and scroll down to the bottom and it has all of the standards there. I prefer Resolve over Premiere so I'm excited to try what CVT demonstrated in this video.

@@hl6816 That's a useful feature as well, but it doesn't always work. It's good for normalizing the loudness of the entire edit, but you'd still need to monitor and adjust the loudness of the clips manually.

I don't know the Fairlight page too well and this was the perfect video. Here are my notes: - Ctrl/CMD drag to stack stereo (Extra: D enables/disables tracks; works everywhere) - Chadwick's hat kind of reminds me of McDonalds - Shift + 7 -> Fairlight Page; Shift + 4 -> Edit Page - Index -> Tracks allows for renaming, controlling, hiding, and reordering audio tracks - Fairlight -> Timeline view options -> You can turn on video tracks o0 (you can also view the gain) - Edit Selection Tool - you can duck a range on a track using that easily (with automatic keyframes); you need to select the top track of the clip - You can use the Arrow Selection tool when max-zoomed in to smooth the audio waveform (and get rid of pops or other sudden noises); Right Click -> Reset Edited samples to undo everything - Option + CMD + Mouse Scroll/Alt + Ctrl + Mouse Scroll will zoom in audio waveforms but not the timeline (only on the Fairlight page) - Chadwick's hat says "NY" and the red is not McDonalds red; that one is solved at least o0 - Layered Audio Editing - like a composite clip for audio; Enable with Timeline -> Layered Audio Editing; To view them, View -> Show Audio Track Layers; You can color, reorder them; Only the topmost layer will be audible - Easily Normalize Audio (Chadwick has a full video on that, so go watch that); Timeline -> Bounce Mix to New Track -> Select New Track; Solo the new track and Right Click -> Analyze audio levels; You can further Normalize using ITU-R 1770-4 (the latest/greatest) to a -14 LKFS and -1 dBTP (for YT)

Hi Chadwick, Following my comments below I have just tried Audacity which is free and the latest version did a pretty good job of normalising the mix to -0.9 and -14LUFS. Shame Davinci cant do the same.

The main thing is that Fairlight won't do any compression or limiting without you telling it to do so. This is why you can't pull the level up as easily. There is a paid plugin from waves that can be added to your output bus in Resolve if you would like this functionality without going out to Audacity. But yeah I'm with you and would love to have a limter/normalize function combined as an option.

Could you do a video on color management and grading in Resolve for the DJI Mini 3 Pro 10-bit footage. Similarly it would be useful to have some input on GoPro. Hi Andrew, thanks so much for watching. One of the challenges with color management is there isn't always a "setting" that works with every format. Right now that's the case with profiles like the flat profile from that new drone and the GoPro cameras. To normalize those, you would either need to use a LUT or the curves panel. You can still do this if they are just a few select shots in an otherwise color managed project, just right click to bypass color management on those specific clips. I love the suggestion though and just this week we filmed with an FPV drone using GoPro Flat so I'm adding this idea to the list on how to use curves to give the footage some life.

Basically I’m referring to the fact that you can’t get it up exactly to -14 lkfs by only running that automation you need to compress the dynamics some using compression. Adobe audition has a limiter built into this function so it’s a quicker process although less refined as you can’t control the compression ratio. This is not a bad way to finish off a mix in Resolve though.

So do I understand correctly that: If you loudness normalize, you Will hit the loudness speck exactly, but you may exceed (or undershoot) the true-peak speck, without dynamic range compression/limiting? Just aside the range selection tool. It is not simply for cutting, right? So what exactly does it do and for what could i use it??? It is really the last little tool in DVR, that I dont understand. The ducking can also be automated by using the dynamics panels in the Fairlight tab. Set dialogue track's dynamics compressor to Send, set the music track's dynamics compressor to Listen, set your threshold, attack, hold release of the compression settings on your music track's dynamics aaand you're done. No need to manually select, keyframe and adjust the music track endlessly and the adjustment is dynamic so if you slip or move clips in the edit, the adjustment goes with it. It also uses compression rather than an arbitrary level change of the whole track, so only sounds over a certain threshold get punched down. Keeping your music bed from sounding thin when it's being ducked :)
