I am amazed by people such as yourself who brainstorm, develop a plan, make charts, write it out. I just knit what I like. My likes are varied with different styles. I have a few friends who brainstorm, and develop plans. I think it is a left/right brain thing. Everyone does what works for them. I think that is also why I can only work on one knitting project at time. I am jealous of those who are able to work on more than one project. I once cast on a few projects and still ended up working on only one at at time.

I look at all the beautiful neutral (color and style) projects knitted by others. I long to be one of those knitters. But when I go to buy yarn….the clown show comes to town. Obviously, lots of color is my aesthetic.

6:44 OK I’m not even 10 minutes in and I’m already like I need to go get a pad and pencil. I guess I’m probably gonna have to watch this a second time. 😅 This is why I love you Tayler! I just absolutely totally jam out on this kind of class type, learning type knitcast. The deep dives, book lists, and art fores… And thank you for not just leaving it at’ have a vision,’ but going on to explain what you mean and how to get there. I’m a librarian, and I love cardigans, so I think my working title is going to be librarian chic. 😂 Okay… back to the video.. 🤣 24:32 okay, finished the video! So, excited about homework. 😁 I recently picked out my geogradient palette for the Stephen West MKAL (I didn’t love any of the pre-fab ones) and I feel like I had to go down some of these roads. I was looking for some thing that regardless of how wild the the pattern was I would either wear it because the colors would match my wardrobe, or it would look good in my main living space. So I’m really excited to kind of go through my Yarn and also just kind of look around my house and see what types of textures and fabrics and colors I really do come back to . This is fabulous Taylor. Thanks so much. Now I just have to decide if I want to do a physical or digital mood board. I am old now, and though I have knitted since I was 8 years old (I taught myself from the old green pamphlet-which I’m sure you have never seen), but I never ventured out. I think this is a lovely idea. I want to offer one addition, after playing around with my own knitting reflections. there is knitting style, driven by personal artistic aesthetic (awesome) but there is also knitting story. by that I mean, how the aesthetic comes from, and visually/kinesthetically reflects a sense of cultural symbolism. what moves me about knitting is its ability to enable us to directly become the storytellers of our own clothing culture. sometimes breaking out of existing knitting patterns, to make a sketch of something personally relevant, and shift that visual over to a colorwork stitch program is meaningful. sometimes a yarn tells a story (does it ever not?) about a place and animal relationships. I would be inspired to see knitters choosing aesthetics that reflect story of place and season, their own codes and geometries, and dye recipes and stories that go with them. I sometimes get a sense that being adrift with style aesthetic clarity is an opportunity to come into a cultural coherence with oneself first...and perhaps in widening circles after. .... does that make sense? for example, there is a weaving village in Peru in which the presence/type/ placement and amount of pompoms on ones purse signifies ones marital status (extremely useful in figuring out courtship with less potentially awkward moments). knitting (like most textile arts) is a communication as well as a clothing, even if the message communicated amounts to “simplicity”. I think we do this naturally anyway, but it adds extra fun to do it intentionally from time to time.

Yes. Absolutely yes. This is a Midweek Ramble all by itself and one I’d love to explore more. When it comes to developing any personal aesthetic, your story/culture/identity is a huge part of that and for a lot of folks, that may be everything and I love that. I know about the village in Peru and the pom poms and it’s such a great example of what you’re saying here. Thank you so much for adding your comment. ❤️

How interesting, i am a sucker for homework! Years ago i worked with someone who, whenever she went shopping, would pull out a little notebook with style notes for herself. i thought this was hilarious, imagine having to wander around shops saying " no polka dots,no purple" to yourself, hah! But after knitting so many things recently that don't go with anything, don't fit my older body and are just in styles i don't wear, i am beginning to see the light. So, i accept your challenge and look forward to wandering around shops myself with my new aesthetic and muttering " no pink, no raglans".

I have done a lot of wardrobe building workshops when it comes to sewing and I have simply transferred this over to knitting as well. I find myself always attracted to aesthetic fall photos, and gothic photos, and photos of Halloween! So my main wardrobe staple colour are black, brown, and grey as a base. Warm oranges and rusts as secondary colours, with creams, bright pinks, bright greens, bright purples as colour pops.

I think I have been feeling this conflict within myself lately between the things I like & want to knit vs. the things I like and would want to actually *wear*. My now 14 year old daughter learned cursive in grade 3. She hated it along with all of her classmates. She prints everything she writes down. She is better at a keyboard. Uses a laptop at school. She cannot read my cursive even when extremely neat. I work in an elementary school after hours. The majority of kids can't read a clock - prefer to look on a cell phone. Their fine motor skills are lacking - noticed this when a 10 year old asked me to teach her how to crochet. I won't even touch the attention span issue. Thanks from a sometimes frustrated Canadian.

Oooooh, this is gonna be a rabbit hole for me - something I will happily fall down into! Knitting, color and texture, let's go! I'm one of those weirdos who decorates my home with the seasons, so I've just switched over to Halloween. I would live in Autumn forever, tweaking the colors to allow for a smidge of Summer (lighter shades), and a heavy dose of Winter (bring on the dark and sparkles). I think "seasonal" would really describe my style, both in decorating and what I love to wear. I prefer dark foresty colors, but appreciate the lighter values, like in spring and summer. I happily exist in a wardrobe of dark colors, especially purple, but then I get a notion of "maybe I should wear more pink, or yellow, or light blue," and I get all muddled about what I "should" be doing, the remedy for which is just tshirts, yoga pants and cardigans. Anyway, this is a great idea, and I'm using this homework to take me off the hook of what I "should" be wearing!

Thanks for the impetus; this is a really good idea Tayler, so I embarked on a little KZbin crawl and found "5 things I no longer knit - and why" by HEIDIY Knitting Podcast. This is coming at the same idea from a different direction. It really coalesces ones "fashion" ideas. So... I have decided to frog a couple of items that I'm not wearing or donate them to a Charity (Thrift) Shop and also to stop making things just because that gorgeous yarn is on offer at Lovecrafts or Wool Warehouse. This has got to be garment-led or I'll be forever making hats and Sophie Scarves with a painfully large stash!!

This is an interesting exercise. It helps to understand your own personal knitting expression. Influences are trying to get your limited knitting dollars with the latest yarns and patterns. If you understand what you enjoy you are able to ask yourself if you truly love it or if you are being influenced. It also helps at fiber festivals when everything is truly gorgeous and if you know what you are really going to use it helps the buying experience.

I love that you are examining knitting in a different way than in the past. Your previous podcast addressing the approach to limit projects and the purchase of yarn to projects. I got back into knitting and crocheting about 2 years ago. It is scary how much yarn I accumulated. When I looked at the yarn, I realized how much of it I do not like anymore and have been donating skeins and skeins. I was also very into making baby blankets for a while and now am moving towards taking on the challenges of garments. I will no longer buy yarn just because it is beautiful and then let it sit. It became so overwhelming having so much. I am already feeling better with less and have adopted a new color scheme that I am liking as well as type of yarn. Thank you for the refocus.

Definitly participating as I have determined an aesthetic for myself a few years ago ! Graphist professional deformation :') As someone who do a lot of moodboard, you method is effective ! With time, you can "burn" some steps by identifying directly aesthetic keyword in your mindmap, I personally already knew what keywords and textures where linked to thoses keywords in the brainstorm step. Even with a firm aesthetic, it still was super interesting because I know what I want but I haven't think how to apply this to my knitting journey, and funnily enough, never created a moodboard.

I created many interior design mood boards before we moved into our house. I did not really do the same thing for knitting, but I do have a pinterest board for that as well, and if I look over it, I'll probably find that I tend to like similar things over and over again. I'd describe my style as "practical with a whimsical touch", so Jeans, cozy sweaters that are LONG enough (never cropped) but fairly classic and unisex. My colour pallette is between jewel tones and neons, so sapphire, royal blue, all sorts of teals, plus eyewatering hot pink, often combined with black. You mention fisherman's rib - I'm currently finishing up a test knit for Zanete Knits, the Kristine Cardigan, I think the release will be in October. It's a lovely, fairly simple half-fisherman's rib cardigan with a high collar, and I'm knitting it in graphite grey but adding colourful glitter to the hem, cuffs, collar and button bands, combined with dark mother-of-pearl buttons that also shimmer in many colours. Also in my WIPs I have the Lanark Sweater by Rebecca Clow, which is a Troyer-style half zip unisex sweater in half fisherman's rib. I could very well picture you wearing it.

this is such an interesting video! I watched it twice in a row to let all the points sink in. it's a topic I've been thinking about a lot. I want to be more intentional with choosing my knitting projects. However... I feel like for me, since I am a chronic overthinker, I could get lost in the details of the plan for ages and second guess every decision I make. I also don't want to feel like I need to throw out half my wardrobe so everything can be perfectly curated, I just can't afford that mindset. I think I am going to trust my intuition and choose projects one at a time based on what feels right in the moment. I pin a lot of things on a "knitting inspiration" board on pinterest, and looking at it I can definitely already see a strong theme. Lots of rich, jewel tones... colorwork, floral motifs, and lace. I can also predict that if I go and curate this moodboard right now, I will hate my current project and feel like it's not "just right." I really want to focus on finishing things and going with the flow. I'm the type of person that has to be project monogamous, once I get eyes for a different project, I will abandon the old one and I want to stop that wasteful habit. Kind of goes along with your video about balancing creative energy with slowness and sustainability. it's a hard balance!

I think that you should definitely not embark on something like this if it causes you stress. My intention with this, for myself, is to use it as a way to focus my knitting project planning so I don't feel overwhelmed by all of the available options and so I understand my personal aesthetic and what sorts of things I know I'll wear--because that's really important. I definitely don't plan on doing something like this as a means to redefine my current wardrobe and I hope that I didn't convey that in this video. You can do that, and some recommend it, but that's a whole other thing from this. My focus here is on my knitting projects and choices exclusively, and not even the ones I'm currently working on, unless I find that something just isn't fitting into my personal tastes and aesthetic--in which case, I may also notice that I'm less interested in it to begin with...which is telling. So do it if it inspires you and do it to the extent that you're comfortable. But also, don't do it if it's not for you. You need to keep your crafting joyful. On another not, thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts. You're not alone in these thoughts by any means and sharing them is important. Heck, it's just cool that my video provoked thoughts! ❤

Nothing wrong in having two color pallets. I tend to do greys, navy, burgundy, royal blue, denim combos. Other pallet is forest green, chocolate brown, mint green, tans.

Well I know what I love in knitwear and colours. I am a winter in my colour chart and will wear lots of blues, greens and grey. Red is my favourite colour and I tend to wear it a lot. I am very much a novice knitter but know I like fitted cardigans and structured sweaters. Love stripes and tend to use arty or structured pieces for work and casual, colourful trends for the weekend.

Hmm not sure about this one.... seems to make the question of what do i like to make overly complicated. If i did all 7 steps i would be overwhelmed and questioning every preference. Do i sometimes make things i dont love when they are finished? Yes. Definitely. That informs my choices for next time. Even though i am very much a product knitter as opposed to a process knitter i never feel like my failed projects are a loss. I do suppose over the years i have refined the types of projects and materials i like, but i dont think i need to make notes and boards in order to know what i like and dont like. Swatches and ravelry favorites and all my favorite KZbinrs are enough to fuel my creativity and consider making what brings me joy.

Really interesting, thanks, Tayler. Minor question for everyone - does anyone else pronounce aesthetic with a soft ‘th’ sound in the middle of it rather than a hard ‘t’ sound? I’m noticing more and more use of the hard t and wonder, is this just the American pronunciation? Or a regional thing? I’m British and think most people in the UK say ‘th?’

Ah the dreaded “imagine in your mind…” nope. Can’t do that. It’s rather frustrating. I went through all of school with teachers saying “imagine in your mind” “see in your mind” “picture in your mind”. Not everyone has a visual memory. Not everyone can create mind maps. This is NOT a critique of her video or process of discovering her style. This is just an interesting tid bit. Not a single educator I had during kindergarten-graduate school knew that some people do not have visual memories.

That’s not where I thought you were going with this video 😂. It’s a nice concept however I know I am always drawn to creams and whites and I love the cosy thick knit vibe. However while that appeals to my eye what suits my body is very very different. I am plus size so wearing light colours is not very flattering and highlights all my lumps and bumps. Same with thick heavy knits, I love the cosy look but I run hot with my natural padding so would never wear a heavy knit garment. I find ignoring my aesthetic and knitting items based on what colours suit my skin tone and style that suit my body shape results in garments that fit me better and I wear more often. But like my size and my body type I am probably very much in the minority here 😂

You are not alone here re: plus size 😊 If you don't wear light colors because you feel they aren't flattering on plus size figures, it may be as simple as finding a sweater "shape" that is flattering. Or learning to modify your knits to fit your body better. Someone may remember better than me, but It may have Tayler who had links to ways to modify knitwear. If creams and light colors bring you joy and thick, cozy knits bring you joy = wear them! @@katmahasti honestly it’s my body type not that I am plus size that causes me the most bother. I have broad shoulder, large bust and narrow hips. So light colours on top make me look even more unbalanced. I need v necks and peplums which are just not popular. Or at least I struggle to find knitting patterns made for my body shape so I usually just end up making my own.

I think that that awareness of what pleases your eye, but isn’t always the most comfortable to wear, is really important and could be it’s own step; narrowing down the inspiration by what you know you don’t enjoy wearing (for whatever reason). And body shape is far more important of a consideration than overall body size, like you mention. There are so many factors at play, far beyond a person’s “mass”-if that makes sense.

I understand where you’re coming from. But like I emphasize a few times in the video, this is not intended to be a rigid set of rules. Its intended to provide me (or anyone who finds this valuable) more focus and a bit more aesthetic direction in their knitting project planning and wardrobe. In terms of why I would do this, I think you’re more or less asking why YOU would do this. And maybe you wouldn’t. And if you wouldn’t or if you find no value in it, then it’s not for you. And that’s totally ok. I would say though, and you can take it or leave it, limitations can be liberating. It may seem counterintuitive, but when it comes to creativity and creative expression, some of the best work is restrained by limitations. My own opinion, of course.
