Agreed also. SO glad I stumbled onto his videos! Someone does needs to do a real series about accurate color correction vs. color grading - someone who's been around since before the time when people started using still cameras to make movies, so that it's someone who actually understands RYB gains, why they are what they are, and how to actually calibrate color to an accurate, measurable representation prior to "grading." :) I'm not sure any accurate tutorials exist on the subject. Kind of like timecode - no one outside older filmmakers and tv studio engineers really understands it anymore well enough to explain it, much less teach how to use it. In fact, most don't even believe it's valuable. People spend $300 apiece on little devices to feed timecode into cameras without ever understanding what to do with it later, and even post in production companies producing shows for network tv just ignore the embedded tc and use plural eyes, smh.
@Joey_Helms3 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! Agreed on colour grading/correction. I may collaborate with a pro to talk about it at some point here cause I am just doing what feels right and is not scientifically accurate. And ha TC, yeah something I also just started using with the Komodo but such a big fan!

Great stuff, keep it up! Also, I just wanted to point out that with the Komodo you don't need to worry about black shading again after changing exposure. On DSMC2 cameras you would have to do this if you didn't black shade for all the exposure range. But on the Komodo, when you black shade it takes into account all the different exposures for that sensor temp. You'll notice this when the changing exposures the E may go yellow, then switch back to green. And as you mentioned the T/E (T=Temp and E=Exposure), watch these because if the T is green that means the temp changes haven't been significant enough to need a new black shade. Also, that blob you saw almost looks like you had some light leak when you black shaded. Most lens caps aren't dark enough to do a trustworthy black shade. I would recommend the body cap over a lens cap in most situations. And then even trying to cover it up with something else dark if outside on a sunny day. Finally, this is super important, black shade after your camera has warmed up (can speed this up by letting it record for several minutes). Hope this helps!
@Joey_Helms4 жыл бұрын
Great, great call out! Gonna pin it for a bit so people read! Still learning 😉 @People - Please read it!
@Helivatefilmsaerial4 жыл бұрын
I need to make a correction to one thing. If you do make a significant enough change to exposure (+-1/2 sec) you will see the E go yellow, indicating a new calibration is suggested. But that is a pretty significant change as I've only seen the E go yellow when really cranking the shutter speed. Which ideally you don't want to do anyways to keep a natural motion blur.
@CineGraphStudios4 жыл бұрын
Is the black shading going to be more efficient once it is no longer in Beta? I would find this super annoying if I constantly had to black shade.
@WeAreMapuche4 жыл бұрын
@@CineGraphStudios No, this is not a beta issue, this is just how the camera works. It’s really not as big of an issue as you think. But it is something to consider. This isn’t a point and shoot system.

Excellent video. The only thing I would've liked to see more of is how to expose low light scenes. I've been having trouble with that when the light isn't controllable. Again, amazing work.
@Joey_Helms4 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot! :) Well low light just give the sensor as much light as possible... Fast lens wide open, 180 degree shutter angle and then in post define the acceptable level of ISO (nothing you need to worry about during the shoot). If there are streetlights, some clipping of the lightsources should be fine. This is at least how I handle it.
@dna82694 жыл бұрын
@@Joey_Helms Thanks for the reply Joey! I appreciate it. I was a bit confused due to the "Low light capture" video on RED's channel -- they reference having your ISO set to a lower value while increasing the exposure of the scene via light, but to my understanding ISO doesn't affect the exposure of the raw data, so why would they speak about lowering the ISO to decrease your noise floor? I was thinking it didn't matter either, like you said. Confusing stuff. With that said, I will use your method! What do you feel is the upper level of ISO you can shoot at (or adjust to in post, rather) before it starts to become unusable?
@Joey_Helms4 жыл бұрын
How I interpret it is that they are assuming that you can introduce more light in your scene and basically say don't crank up your ISO and then built your light and exposure out but work off a lower ISO. But hey, I am no expert. For me, w/o noise reduction in post, I think 1600 is the limit depending on how dynamic the scene is. Just my $0.02. everyone has different opinions on whats acceptable ;)

@geirisk84 жыл бұрын
You know that adjustment layers stack on top of each other, right? So the bottom one is what happens first, then the next one on top affects whatever you've done below and so on so forth. So if your Rec.709 conversion LUT is on top, the other stuff is happening before you are doing the conversion.
@Joey_Helms4 жыл бұрын
Yup that's correct! I guess I wasn't clear enough 😂 nonetheless the rec709 has to happen last and hence be in the top layer.
@geirisk84 жыл бұрын
@@Joey_Helms Hmm I would beg to differ. This is like using LOG footage where you want to convert it to Rec.709 and then work on the clip after you've put it into the correct colour space. That's how I look at it. With that said, I've never used a RED camera or worked with RED footage!
@Joey_Helms4 жыл бұрын
Well in the actual workflow you still do the rec 709 conversion first and then build the colour correction and look beneath it so it's non-destructive.

Great video! I'm trying to decide which camera I want. I'm looking between the ZCAM E2-F6, Canon C70, and the Red Komodo.

Thanks!! 🤙🤙🤙 Great choices!!!
@shem444 жыл бұрын
Zcam and komodo is more towards short film and shoots where you have more time to set up whereas c70 is more of a swiss army knife for gun and gun, events and quick workflow. You have to decide which category is more important to you.

@@Joey_Helms what is your opinion on the Komodo as an upgrade? I want to stay in the under $8k range for camera and accessories and use existing canon glass that I own. Would be for indie films.
@Joey_Helms3 жыл бұрын
If you fancy a raw workflow and a global shutter the Komodo may be your camera upgrade

Are some of you guys experiencing issues in reading RED files in Final Cut Pro 10.5 ? Nothing is working for me anymore.

I have a question about the Red Komodo, I somehow read that it will have autofocus, with this decision they wanted to take bloggers, but not in one of the Komodo tests I didn’t hear that they were saying something for autofocus, and now it became interesting to me to eat it there or not, and if there is how it works?
@Joey_Helms4 жыл бұрын
Yes it has autofocus. I am touching on it on my initial review video. It's getting better and better

god the footage you take on this is so gorgeous, I want to take it for a travel camera but i feel like it's not quick enough for run and gun, with the black shading, startup times and all that, what has your experience been?
@Joey_Helms2 жыл бұрын
Definitely not the fastest cam so you would have to keep it running. Black shading is not required every time you boot it up. Only if temps swing. I shot with it in Iceland and it is certainly built for planned shoots but if you challenge yourself you can run and gun with it like I do.

how do i get my hands on one?
@Dudekay74 жыл бұрын
@@jdwhite1 I ordered from B&H over two weeks ago. RED sent an unknown number (probably a few hundred) to some of their "premiere" dealers, and B&H was one of them. I think I've heard that most people are expecting to get their Komodo around October 15th. Honestly man, your best bet is to try to join the "Red Komodo Users" group on Facebook, and look to see if anyone is selling theirs. Times have been tough for a lot of people, so some people have had to resort to selling their ST Komodo.
