I shaved my head in April to release myself from exactly what you were talking about, i've been overweight all my life and I always viewed my hair as the only beautiful, feminine thing about me that would hide my disproportionate body and areas i was insecure about. Honestly everyone was always complimenting my hair (i used to dye it gray or pink often), but I was tired of it, how much time and money i was spending on it and how it was so closely tied to my insecurities. So i just dyed my hair every color I ever wanted for a while, told my dad so he wouldn't have a heart attack, and shaved it all off ceremoniously on a livestream with my friends lol. And that was one of the high points of my life to be honest. and I'm saving so much money and time getting ready.

Nikki I usually don’t snack except for maybe a small piece of candy. We tend to eat dinner from 5:30-7pm depending on what’s going on that day. Lunch for me is anywhere from 11am-1pm when my body finally says, “food sounds good now”.

He gets nauseous if he eats before 11am, but I absolutely need to eat within an hour (preferably 30 minutes) of waking up or I feel like I'm starving. Gym memberships get a really bad rap, but it just depends on the buyer. I work as a freelancer front my home office and going to the gym to see and talk to people is inspiring. But I understand it makes no sense to pay for it and not use it. Weirdly, for me the fact that I’m paying is an incentive to go.

+1 I use mine really heavily too. But I think it does go to the core of her video--know yourself, and before you invest a lot of money into something, be really honest about how likely you are to use it. And if you can, test it in a smaller way first to see whether you use it as much as you expect.

I think it gets a bad rap because people buy memberships in bulk (like a bulk amount of people) as part of resolutions because it makes them feel like they're making progress when really they aren't dedicated so they're just wasting money. It really should be people using fiscal things to pretend they are changing that should get the rap, not the things they buy.

I am a morning faster. I don't eat breakfast because I don't want to and am not hungry until I was awake for 4 hours. The "most important" meal is, according to some professionals in my life, simply the FIRST meal of the day, where you eat most calories. So if lunch at 12 is my first meal, it's important to fill myself up then. And I can relate to the money factor, since smoothies I would make would contain lots of pricy ingredients. 🌿

With me my type of breakfast and what I grew up with is eating breakfast like a meal. I don’t want the typical American eggs and hash browns, I want dinner leftovers and or complex carbs before I start my day. I feel like the typical breakfast doesn’t hold me over for couple hours, I’d rather have a boiled egg in adobo juice with brown rice in the morning or left over dinner, that holds me over for 2-3 hrs until it’s time for snack, then lunch in couple hours. That’s just me though, everybody is different. Ever since I workout more and do more weight exercises I seem to burn the calories more, therefore the food I eat just goes through my body. I weigh 95lbs for 4”8 😬, but I’m pretty strong and I’ll eat 4-5 times a day. By the way I used to be 120lbs back in 2009 so I know exactly what she’s talking about. Nowadays I stay with the routine that works for me and I workout 3-4x a week. And I think I’m at the best shape of my life.

I get it wasn't intentional and you'd probably rather be healthy but it says nothing about how relatively healthy people should lose weight. Exercise still can help by burning calories, making it easier to take in less calories than you consume. Plus depending on the type of exercise you might also build muscle which burns even more calories. I still think diet or fasting is needed in most cases too

Great video! You are speaking directly to me in this. And btw, I thought like 20 videos ago that your hair style fits your face really nicely.

I’ve been on the fence about quitting the gym membership and feel this is a sign after watching your video. I used to be a fitness nut but after my divorce, I just can’t go back in there or any gym and don’t like the vibe there anymore. I do yoga and meditation now and walk my dog. Much better for my health anyway. ✌🏼🌱

This was a great video. I appreciate you sharing your point of view and your history. This isn’t always easy to do, but I know I relate to hearing your personal stories instead of general advice. Thank you for that. This video reminded me of all the videos that I enjoyed from TFD in 2018 and a great way to start 2019.

Best way to boost your body confidence is to run body confidence workshops for kids. I did this through Girlguiding and realised the things I was teaching the kids was important, love your body for what it can do, not what it looks like. Changing one habit at a time, I started with eating porridge instead of cereal (not too happy at how this video promotes not eating breakfast at all), and then eating salad for lunch instead of sandwiches, then realising juice is a treat and drinking water instead, and then exercise. Not that I cared about how my body looked but wanted to be a healthy role model for the kids I work with.

Even though I agree with all the rest (and i think you didn't mean to say it this way), breakfast is important for some of us. I did intermitent fasting for a couple months and it just made me develop GERD and gain weight because I wasn't eating enough calories, and my body started starving and overproducing acid. So be careful if you try this, it's not for everyone.

For me the YMCA is very affordable and I managed to go 192 times last year. Mostly I did swimming but also at least 100 drop-in classes (that are free with membership or drop-in fee). They have free membership for a whole 10 days right now so it's not asking for any money. Also they have fee-assist programs where you could get a free membership just by being a volunteer a couple times a month. All long-term volunteers get free membership. I know many people fail to make the most of their memberships, but that doesn't have to be the case. Completely off topic, but I'm slightly concerned about the wind moving the streetlight and the trees outside your window.

i think you are right about memberships: it seems more expensive to pay up front each time you go, but at least, each thing you paid for, you got - it might not have been the cheapest it could have been, but that's the benefit of hindsight. And some months, hindsight teaches differently

Lately I've been having issues with my body because I lost around 12 kilos, and it all started when I got sick and my body wasn't properly absorbing nutrients. So a lot of people, especially during the holidays, kept "complimenting" me on my weight and it really made me so anxious. I am just getting accustomed to this new body, but I didn't feel like I was myself.

I loved this video and really related to it. I recently realized the reason I overspent my whole teenage and adult life (until now!) was because I was fundamentally unhappy with myself. This is especially true of overspending on clothes that I didn't even really like, because I was always trying to find something I felt comfortable in or that would give me a boost when the actual problem couldn't be solved with new clothes. Thank you for making this! Also, can you tell me where your desk lamp is from? It's beautiful and I've been looking for a similar one.

Being unhappy with my body makes me spend a lot of money on expensive designer clothes, makeup and expensive bags. Just this morning I almost spent money on a £3600 Louis Vuitton Capucines bag which 1. I did not need 2. Was not my style. I'm glad you're talking about this topic because issues with my body is one of the major reasons why I end up spending so much money.

I can relate to so much of this. I’ve never bought an “emergency” outfit change except that one time my pants ripped when I worked at Macy’s and I walked right down to Women’s Ready to Wear and bought a new pair! And also I really like breakfast and would rather skip lunch and have an early dinner than give up my favorite meal. But so much of this - buying clothes and makeup and books and diet foods because I don’t like myself, instead of actually working on the things I don’t like . . .

This is a great video, but, it is extremely difficult to NOT shop for emotional reasons. With me, I buy sewing paper patterns and I presume I have over a hundred. I want to dress up all the time and I don't need to dress up all the time. Thanks for the advice and Happy New Year.

but to be fair, they don't take up much space, and what they are is clear. To explain: if like me you hoarde, eventually the hoarde takes up serious space, but if it's eg earrings, it doesn't. And if it's non-transparent things, the less transparent the worse: all my old unlabelled two-hour-long casette tapes - how am i going to sort thousands of them? Books: at least i can see what it is, but how do i know if i'd love to read it or hate it, without reading them all?? Nightmare. Stick to hoarding things you can take one look at and go 'yes, want it - no, don't' and you'll never have quite the nightmare i had!

Thanks for this! I started IF a few months ago because the structure of it appealed to me (and I needed to address my health more directly, since it had declined significantly after some family struggles), and it wasn't until I got going that I realized how much time/energy I was also wasting on those get-fit-quick fads. The weight loss aspect has been slow going, but I've definitely appreciated some of the other benefits, and I've been focusing on taking those positives with me into 2019.

Intermittent fasting isn't an eating disorder. BUT (lol) a lot of people call daily time restrictions (only eating from time X to time Y) IF and it's not. IF is something that involves very low (but extant) calorie intake for a couple days and then normal 2Kish caloric intake on other days. It's a much longer shot. It also has different health benefits. If daily time restrictions (basically just skipping brekkie and not eating late which... a lot of people do anyway) can get you to keep to your needed calorie intake that's great. That's all it can do. And it's hard to maintain. The health benefits for longevity and avoiding serious illness (or managing it) come from IF. So if your only goal is weight control it's fine to do it either way (both styles do this), if you want to gain better health beyond weight loss you would do actual IF.
