The auto market in the US is highly competitive. It's much cheaper to buy and own a Mercedes or BMW in the US than over there. People in Germany would rarely choose between a Mercedes and a Lexus, which a US buyer might do. Also, a large chunk of the German car fleet is purchased by the employer as a perk. The entitled employee gets a budget for his company car, but only has to worry about paying for upgrades.

Auch, aber nicht zwingend. Benzin inst in den USA auch deswegen billiger weil die USA einen Großteil des Öls selber fördern was Deutschland mangels ausreichend großer Ölvorkommen nicht kann. The price for standard US gasoline is typically for 87 ... yes 87 octane gas. The US uses the Ron rating system, and premium 91 octane here converts to about 95 European octane. 95 is bottom of the barrel in Europe, and some gas stations sell 102 or even higher octanes. In the US, if you can find it, 99 octane sets you back 10 bucks a gallon or more. You're comparing apples to oranges.

One correction: It is not a driver's licence, it is a driver's permit. Why make the difference? A licence can be purchased. Normally yes, you have to register and so on, but it is not a big hassle. For a permit you have to prove, that you are able to survive the German Autobahn. This is a Big deal.

You cannot compare announced prices for electronics in Germany compared to the United States. In the U.S. you pay the price as announced plus state tax. In Germany you negociate a price which can be up to 30% lower than the announced price. Germany has abolished resale price maintenance. The same applies to cars. I bought a car in 2012 which was announced at €35.000 and have finally paid €25.000 in cash (wire transfer from bank to bank) after negociation.

Driving costs, gasoline and car prices must be put in another context, though. In America it is almost absolutely necessary to drive anywhere and everywhere, and the physical distances are so much greater. It is not uncommon, especially in the western states, that we must travel a hundred miles per day. So these costs must be kept reasonable. However, in Germany, there is public transportation and the physical distances are very short, so going from place to place is almost doable by walking or biking! Try walking or biking a hundred miles per day in America because there is no public transportation, making it almost a necessity to own and operate your own car. Also, take into consideration that many Americans, especially in the western states, actually have TWO automobiles - a commuter car plus a van or truck to haul kids, passengers or cargo. Personally, I have a commuter car AND a pickup truck. And for peeing, I found it actually very comforting to pay to pee, because the facilities are always clean and sanitary. The public restrooms in America, in contrast, are dirty, stinky and unsanitary. Sometimes in America, I would rather pay to pee than pee in the stinkholes that are always available to the public. However, I found that in Germany, even if I was willing to pay, the WC's were often few and far between.

Question: Did you compare the prices with or without taxes? Because US prices are usually given without it, German prices include them. Consequently especially everything which is a larger purchase looks more expensive at the first glance, but once you add the tax, the difference is oft smaller. (But yeah, gas/petrol is more expensive in Germany because of the environment taxes). Also, there is a huge difference between the Listenpreis of cars and what you really pay when you buy one. You usually get them cheaper than what they are advertised at.

When it comes to electronics the price difference in general is not so high as you depicted, when you take the US sales tax in account. Furthermore there is no mandatory warranty (Sachmängelhaftung) for 2 years in the US. Taking these things in your calculation the advantage should only be a couple of %. In regards to cars there might be differences in quality, exhaust and safety standards, etc. E.g. the VW Passat in the US is not comparable with the German counterpart. This due to the fact that the US model has an inferior quality, thus it can be offered for a lower price. On the other hand when you compare e.g. a Mercedes E class, the price difference should be approx. 10-15% in favor for the US side.

hi^^ i know the difference in cars in us vs ger is quite easy to explain. in the us markets you basically only need wheels, engine and a sterring wheel to be allowed to drive that car. in ger there are strict regulations and a car needs to meet them all to get on sale in the first place. so the automobile industry sells different versions of the same model fit for a different market and its regulations. so a bmw 2er series is the same car on the outside, but has a different "anatomy" on the inside

From all this things the only a really chiper is geting driver licence . That is uncomparable chiper in USA . The other staff are discussible . Like gas prices . In USA the distances are hughe , the country is a much biger and the cars are much biger . Really in Germany you pay more for gas per unit , but in generall your monthly bill for gas will be a much lower . Second a part of taxes because the gas in Germany cost more is going to mabe for a medical insurance , and almost all people in Germany are covered . In USA aorund 40% do not have any medical protection and the rest are by the time a less and less covered . Cars in USA are chiper but only the biger one and the higher classes . There is in Europe in general and Germany a many small sizes , economy class , cars that are chiper than the chipest car in USA . Also food in Germany is about half of the prices in USA . And mid class in Germany has a much biger buying power than in USA . What make USA impresive is the wrong way how thay calculate everidge salary , because in all USA corporations wee have a few Top paid guys ( CEO, VP , and a few top managers) and the rest of workers working for very low money . But whan you calculate with CEO , VP , Top Managers salaries , this look a very fine . Want tou say that all that in USA look more like Holywood than a real life . The real picture is much different than it is shown by statistics . This mean from this 7 things the only real much chiper event iz DRIVER LICENCE , and that is uncomparable on USA side . Everithing else is a very discussible .

@@TheRekreatur The statistical average income is irrelevant without considering the gini coefficient. The Gini coefficient in Germany is 0.29, in the USA 0.41. The average income of the best earning 10 % in Germany is around 7 times higher than the average income of the least earning 10%, in the USA this ratio is nearly around 18 times. This means, that the statistical average income in the US may be higher, but in reality only a few rich, very good earning people are benefiting. There are more income millionaires, but the average earner has less.

Cars are also not the same. I drive a Wolfsburg built Golf GTI. They cheapified everything. For example, they swapped the nice LED taillights for cheap halogen or incandescent ones, without rear fog lights. The rest is cheaper too, like the open cup holder (not the one with the lid and the built-in bottle opener), cheap light switch that doesn't turn on the parking lights, etc. Cars are not the same. In the US you also need to add 10+ percent for various taxes, not just the sales tax which differs from county to county.

The US has trickle pricing. It's 699 for the camera PLUS tax. Okay. That's still a little cheaper. But you get two years full warranty in Germany. In the US you typically get one month, and then maybe the rest of the first year as a "limited" manufacturer's warranty, unless you buy insurance (!), that's so expensive, that you hope shit's gonna break.

I did both. The California driving test was a bit of a joke. I was driving for 7 years when I took that one. We did not even go on the freeway. She complained that I was backing up "too fast" when I had to demo that. You have to pretend that you drive for the first time in your life, I guess. Also no parallel parking, no "rechts vor links" of course, no "residents only" traps that they try on you in Germany.

In the US many people really do learn to drive from the parents instead of a professional instructor. It's a complete joke. About Asian food: the Asian immigrant population is very localized in certain cities instead of being spread around evenly. If you live somewhere with lots of Vietnamese or South Koreans you can probably find cheaper stuff
@jensgoerke38195 жыл бұрын
The smaller Asia shops are much cheaper then the larger supermarket chains. Keep your eyes open and compare prices - instant ramen is up to 1.99 at a normal supermarket but only .79 at the Asia shop. Then take one "fried noodles" pack, prepare it as usual, put it in a slightly oiled pan, add a couple of eggs, and stir vigorously until the eggs are done. Add spices to taste ;-)
