Great tips video Darren! I rolled 11 9's in game 3 of league a few weeks ago... I made all my spares for a 190 game. Not bad. It could have been worse. I had the highest game on the pair. Stayed calm and made my spares. Changed balls twice. We won the game. Never give up.

Great tips. The last 3 are very important. We can know how to control ball down the lane but the bigger thing is that It starts with ourselves. Being open minded keeping the ego in check and staying positive despite the outcome.

Love the advice. Thanks for the “keep your hand behind the ball” tip. I haven’t heard that one yet but will be trying it. My first time bowling was 5 months ago and I started learning to hook 2 months in. Currently, I’m still learning to stay consistent with my hooks and picking up the oil patterns. Highest game to date is 246 with a house ball, 244 with my personal ball. Trying to keep it consistent and get over 246 has been a challenge but I’m not quitting! Wish i had a coach but I think I’m doing okay for now. Hopefully I’ll meet someone who can direct me in person.💪🏽🙌🏾💯

Those scores are very impressive especially since you are only 5 months in. I am getting back into it lately, starting all over one might call it. I was very competitive back in the 70's for God's sake, then again somewhat in the early 90's. I'm sorta old now 60+ but I'm, convinced I can do it better today with the latest technology today.- Balls have changed by leaps and bounds compared to my day. You should be very proud of those scores! Are you still at bowling? Where do you bowl if I may ask? Good Job guy!

There is so much good bowling content on youtube. I started bowling last summer. I watch a lot of bowling on youtube and also talk to experienced bowlers that bowl in my league, work in the pro shop etc. and my game has improved very quickly. One thing I would recommend is to focus on a consistent follow thru after the ball has left your hand. Bring your hand up just like you were going to brush the side of your hair back. Do the same thing every time until you do it without thinking about it. Once you have a consistent follow thru motion focus on consistent hand position after the ball release. Is the palm facing up or down or in a hand shake position? If you can get your hand position with the thumb pointed up in a handshake position (remember that you still need to follow thru bringing your left hand by your left ear as if you were holding a phone) then you should should develop a natural curve to your shot which is ideal. Good luck 👍

@@TonyfromBham I am helping a friend who is also a straight bowler who has been struggling so the timing of seeing your comment was perfect. I hope I was able to explain myself well enough to help. The most important thing to remember when you are learning a new sport is to build one technique at a time. Don't fix everything at once. And don't get frustrated with your scores when you are still developing your technique because the higher scores won't come until you build a solid physical game which takes one step at a time. One thing you can do to speed up the first steps for follow thru is to practice at your house without a ball in your hand. Go thru the motions as if you were bowling and really focus your mind on that follow thru. Once you are able to throw the ball the same way every time without thinking about it then you can start lining up your shots with the arrows because the trajectory of your shots will be predictable. Best of luck to you my friend!

Hi Darren! Thanks for the video, it was really helpful! I just can't understand why videos in YT are so complete and well done, while in the course they're very short and they last from 40 seconds to 1:30 minute... I expected they were more detailed, as a your fan I'm very disappointed by the course HowToBowl... To be honest, if I knew before that on the release I'd have found only few videos of 1 minute or less, I'd not have bought the course. Don't wanna make dissing here, consider it just as an advice to improve the product.

The control what you can control is soo important for your mental game. No matter how much you train, it's always different during game play. Recently heard a great one that i am trying to keep in my head. After a shot, you either Dump it (bad shot, not the line you wanna play, bad result), Celebrate it (shot the line you want and the result you want, but also celebrate a brooklyn strike, not the right line, but you did got the score) or Think (good shot, good line, but leaving ringing 10, what happened, and should i make a adjustment)

Great tips Darren, and definatly things i try to tell my students as well. Especially the spare shooting i think is very important. I've had tournaments where if the ball hit it was strike, but kept missing my spares and thus not making the cut. And have had tournaments where it was hard to make strikes but i was super consistent on my spares (only missed the bigger splits) and thus made the cut, because people around me had trouble on the strikes as well.

Thank you for a terrific video that covers so many important points. Loved the point regarding MAKING your spares. There are times when that strike ball will be "on strike" and not cooperating. Covering spares will keep you sane. Also loved checking the ego and controlling emotions as we are all sharing the lanes and don't need to have to force others to deal with your temper issues. Great job.

Great tips video. For duckpin bowlers like me, your first tip would be equal to our picking the pins (we get 3 balls, like candlepin but don't use the deadwood). Many games are won/lost by less than 10 pins in league play. It is also the best way to increase a bowler's average, just like making spares in tenpin bowling.

This is exactly what I'd tell kids in Jr leagues when I was coaching in the early 1980's. Most were listening to friends or relatives that told them to release the ball like you were shaking hands and they'd try to hold the ball in that position thru their approach. I had to teach many adults also...even those that thought they were doing things the right way. They all improved their game afterwards. And yes...spares and more spares.

Thoughts are a huge tip like you said. I was literally bowling 104 avg in my first league game 3 weeks ago. I was angry and bowled worse. I went this last time great mind had a lot of fun made jokes told myself I got this and I bowled my PB 169 and bowled my PB avg of a 132. I’m only 4 weeks into bowling and I feel like I’m real close two getting my 200 goal! Went from throwing 6 opens/ gutters a game to 1 open and all spares with a strike or two per game. Mind over matter makes a huge difference in anything you do!

Wow excellent video simple be important for me. I am still struggling with being consistent not necessarily winning , but at least not shooting myself in the foot. I tried a bowl straight to like you said, let the ball hook on its own. for some reason I have trouble keeping that technique correct because I always sometimes throw it into the gutter by putting too much rotation or spin on it by accident when I don’t want to I’m trying to shake your hands method I just watched your other video. It works, but sometimes it doesn’t work, but I do make adjustments with my feet and it does help sometimes, it’s interesting with oil patterns. I never read one in person but it’s like trying to read music. You can’t understand it. I just adjust with the lanes to the best I can.

Great advice. I’ve been struggling on the short pattern and I feel like Austin Powers when he lost his mojo. Just trying to get my spare game together. My last 3 games that I bowled I had a total of 4 strikes, 17 spares, and 9 opens that were all easy spares that I missed. Even picked up 2 splits. Go figure. Been struggling for weeks now. Missed Spares are costing me total in wins against my opponent.

Great video D Tang. Very helpful, especially with tip number 2. Being a fairly new bowler in trying to make the ball (fingertip grip Fearless 13lb bowling ball) hook (as opposed to bowling straight) meant I would emphasise the rotation as well as focusing on having my hand under the ball as well as on the inside, which meant I would DESTROY my wrist on the downswing. Like in golf, when I didn't force it I had no pain and a much smoother release as well as a cleaner shot. Keep it up OG.

The "let the ball spin" was a good tip for me, rather than making it. I have been trying to develop my hook after wanting to get back into bowling from a decades-long hiatus (high of 220 then) but having to resort to two-handed because my right hand is no longer strong enough to throw single-handed straight and gets insane strain if I try even just 1-2 straights, but no strain when 2-handed. I can roll it relatively straight two-handed, but it's awkward still. Instead of forcing a hook, I will try in tomorrow's session to just focus on straight patterning =)

The tips are great here but what ultimately fucks everything up is the takeaway. I understand that momentum going back and then forward will keep your hand behind the ball, you still need to keep your hand cupped the entire way going up, leave it cupped, grab it at the top of your swing and then let gravity bring it back down providing your wrist is still cupped and haven't broken and it's still behind the ball. I noticed on my takeaway, my hand was already on top of the ball and when I came back around to release it, it was high, hand was on top and I was pushing/plopping the ball down at an angle instead of releasing it forward and allowing the ball to roll off fingers closer to the ground. I've added a wrist support which prevents breaking of the wrist and keeps the palm behind the ball and it has helped a little. Even after dropping the right shoulder down to relieve the weight of the ball and give my short arms a chance to reach down further to give me a better chance to roll/release on the floor, my videos showed me that I was still too high on the release and body too upright. Quite many frustrating issues to fix. In my mind though, I know where my hand needs to be and what my fingers need to do upon release but if all the other body mechanics are all screwed up, you'll never get the proper end results.

Never bowled competitively. Didnt start until around 23. So casually bowling best advise i could give is join a nice casual league, trust that your better teammates are giving you sound advice, and just have fun with it. Im not "good" by bowling standards, but breaking 200 consistently is more than enough for me to always be having fun. Then, when you give advice in the future, make sure to frame preference not as absolute.

Good tips for sure. I started bowling when I was 12 years old... 62 years ago. lol Bowl in 2 senior leagues and carry around a 200 average. Not great but not bad for an old guy. Best tip I ever got was confirmed by an old man about 40 years ago. He watched me bowl some practice games and I spoke with him for a couple of minutes after that. He said that I had it right by walking down the lane and rolling the ball instead of running down the lane and throwing the ball. I liked that and have been doing it for a long time now. At 6'2" tall and 225 lbs., I don't need to put a lot extra on the ball. Just roll it and let the ball do the work. Biggest problem I have with bowling is too much hook, not too little hook. I always want to be under the ball and not come around the side or over the top. This maximizes my accuracy and the ball seems to hit harder for better pin action.

Question: how useful is learning/getting used to hooking the ball before you have access to a ball of your own and have to use the house balls? I started a while ago but then shortly switch to just straight bowling because I was told you have to overemphasize to hook the house balls well and I don't want my muscle memory of a hook shot to be wrong when I finally get my own ball to use
@ObjectiveEthics

If you play up the 8-10 boards with proper form the house ball with curve toward the pocket. The house ball doesn't create a lot of angle so you need to keep you ball speed a little slow but you shouldn't need to get to "wristy" or "handsy" with the ball because, as you said, you will develop bad habits and risk injuries.

Every time I think I'm behind the ball, by the time the ball is passing my hips, my hand is on top of the ball and still feels like I'm behind it. I stand at 30 - 35 starting at practice throwing 18 -19 out to 6 - 5 but at a Cost, I MUSCLE shot I throw. My tennis elbow huts 7 days a week, and I've never been able to just relax my Swing and let the bowl go. When I mean I Muscle I do, while swinging the crap out of it. It's the one thing I wish I could fix. I'm afraid if I don't I might have to stop bowling due to pain in my elbow.

If you ever get the chance to practice, try to go to the foul line and just swing the ball and dont worry about the pins at all. Just loosen your hand completely. I have tennis elbow cause I used to do the same but I have almost completely healed it off of loosening my grip and just trusting the ball and me knowing how to throw a shot. Hope it works out for ya :)

@@scoutpack1518 I will definitely try this during practice, because I grips, Squeeze and Rip every shot, and my Tennis Elbow is as Bad as ever. Ty

stay behind the ball......not that easy especially if you are a girl. Our arms are angled differently at the elbow, making it much harder to stay behind the ball. (it's also why many beginner girls throw back up balls).

That's why the wrist devices are still legal for women.

@@kingshabazz1310 I d on't think thats it. none of the wrist devises I've seen do anything to straighten the elbow.

It’s a training thing really. Over time the more you forced yourself to do it you will get it. It’s all muscle memory. If you’re not getting the hook or such that you want. You need to change up how you throw if it feels uncomfortable then you’re doing it right. When I first started bowling I was using a 15 and was having a very hard time getting my hand under the ball but the more I forced myself to do it the easier it is. I’m 4 weeks in and still go to old habits every once in a while but for the most part get it without thinking now. Had to build up some stamina and muscle to handle the 15 now I can do 5 games before fatigue sets in

"Let the ball hook", as we used to say back in the day, "hook in the box". It was considered cheating. Soak the ball in acetone.

No Matter how many times people say behind or under the ball, at the moment of release I see hands releasing up the right side. Never straight up the back.

wish you would have gave a better example for the people that need it about trying to hook the ball more, your first ball where you tried still hooked more but you did still give the right advice, hopefully they do as you say and not as you do. Great content nevertheless!

Spares are sooooo important. How many games have we blew up by striking five times in a row but then missing the ten pin on a spare? Lol

I don't want mine to hook. I spot bowl. I always tried to be calculated. Now, in my 60s, I have trouble knowing what weight ball I need. I don't own my own ball anymore. They've gotten way expensive.
