Outside Xtra FAR too many moments in Undertale. The "dirty hacker" ending; Sans asking if the player thought he was "just going to stand there and take it,"; and of course, the moment in the Genocide Route when Flowey talks about how he and the Player are still better than the people who want to do what they've done (the Genocide Route), and then says that some of those people are probably watching, referring to people who watch Let's Plays

How about all of Deadpool's intros and outtros in Marvel vs. Capcom 3? I get that Deadpool knows what media he's in but still - that's a bit much - especially since apparently, he must read manga (which isn't a type of Western Media like comics/graphic novels) to get some of those intros. Seriously, he steals Phoniex Wright's line even and comments how fun it is to say!!

One of the coolest meta I've seen was on an mmo called mabinogi. It's a cute mmo where you didn't necessarily need to fight... You could level up cooking or woodcutting etc... You lived in this cute little world full of trees and flowers and if you died, you could just revive on the spot outside of dungeons. You could also rebirth. The story was about finding a portal to paradise! So it was to my surprise when you finally get to paradise that its the exact same world you've been playing in except all the trees are dead, everything is in ruins, zombies are everywhere, if you die you can't come back to life unless another player rescues you. The game then tells you that long ago humans found a portal and left for paradise dimension abandoning the human world... You've been playing in paradise this whole time! Thats why can't die, you can Reborn, resources are infinite and everything is beautiful! Really freaked me out... Like how did I not see this coming... Yes everything is beautiful, what was I expecting to find in paradise? ... I was taught a valuable lesson by a stupid game!

in Spec Ops: The Line, the loading screens contains your typical "game hints" such as "if you're hurt, take some cover" as well as tiny details of the backstory. However, in the middle point of the game where things start to getting... "dark" (i wouldn't spoil it for those who havent played) the loading screens start to say things like "Do you feel like a hero yet?" "This is all your fault" or my favorite: "The US military does not condone the killing of unarmed combatants. But this isn't real , so why you should care?" This and another little visual details like the main menu screens getting "deteriorated" along the story progress.

The game warned you about the hell you're going into since the beginning of the game right at the main menu. Rather than playing heroic serenades like Fortunate Sons and showing you badass imagery like most typical action shooter games do, the menu shows you an insurgent with a gun, the american flag upside down (which is a signal of distress), and a roughed up version of Jimi Hendrix's Star Spangled Banner, a version of the American anthem meant to highlight the atrocities and horrors of the US's involvement with the Vietnam war.

Three suggestions: Stanley Parable. An entire commentary about choices in video games, where they literally drop you into Minecraft for a bit and yell at you if you disobey the narrator. And their "Raphael Mode" trailer rips other games and fans to pieces. Doki Doki Literature Club. The game glitches, the antagonist messes with the other characters' personality programming, and at the end, Monika literally guessed my REAL NAME and I was like "nope, nope, not having it". You have to essentially beat the boss by going into the local game files. Doesn't get more meta than that. Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair. There's a part where all the characters play an RPG video game that's meant to mirror a real life crime from their past they can't remember (amnesia ftw). At one point, Nekomaru yells "Some of us are characters in a video game!?" and Mikan says "Why am I in a video game? That's an infringement of my right to privacy!" THEN (spoiler) it eventually turns out that they were in a simulation the ENTIRE TIME, meaning there was a video game inside a video game inside a video game. :0

Ultimate spiderman was the best; amazing story, spectacular combat, great webswinging, but the art and cutscenes are legendary as the cutscenes made it play out like a comic on the screen and cell shaded art style allows it to still look good today. Best spiderman game to date (probably will be surpassed by spiderman ps4).

but that's not really the game being self aware. it's more of a "hey, you were actually playing as this alien that took control over this person's mind who you thought you were playing". a game being self aware would be where the game acknowledges common video game tropes, rolls with it and makes a small mockery of it, like Deadpool expanding the size of his censored bar to make his dick bigger, or the Narrator locking you up in his serious room after activating sv_cheats 1.

I figured if there was going to be a Paper Mario entry it would be the moment in TTYD where "Four-Eyes" (Who is literally just Lord Crump in what can only vaguely be called a "disguise") takes the camera with him for a bit and tells you that even though it's extremely obvious who he is that you (the player) aren't allowed to tell Mario.

Nippon Ichi games LOVE being meta. The one that sprang to mind is Disgaea 4 where you fight the Final Boss in chapter 2 (spoiler alert: she isn’t), and it has no less than FIVE “Final chapter”s as a joke about how quickly the previous game ended. And all the while they are making reference to the game mechanics and such. Phantom Brave even had one of the optional bosses as the protagonist of Disgaea. After you beat him, he explicitly says he’s going back to his world to grind up his levels on one of the optional bosses from HIS game. And when you fight him again later, he has indeed leveled up a lot, and calls attention to it. Also like EVERY “Next Chapter” preview in ALL their games is a genre-hopping mess that has nothing to do with the next chapter. Well all of them except the last one per game where it gets serious about it.

The “Just Monica” part is a meta moment that does stand out from the rest of the game that is entirely about being meta, so it at least deserves some credit. It perfectly conveyed the whole game’s deconstruction of player choice as a theme, though the part where Monika called me by my actual name freaked me out far more.

For the sake of Jane making more "Lost Vikings" puns, I could call out the original game, where the three main characters were generally pretty self-aware regarding their role; at the end of every level they would strike a short dialogue with each other, referencing things they, by the game's setting, couldn't know about such as Saturday Morning Cartoons. The most prominent moment however was a conversation somewhere in the first half of the game, when they directly acknowledged being game characters: "Do you guys ever get the feeling like you're being watched?" "Yeah... almost like someone is controlling our every move." "Nah, you two are just paranoid." "Oh really? Than who is THAT!" :D Also I think Mass Effect series ability to being meta WITHOUT actually being universe breaking should be noted, like the time in ME2 when you recruit Mordin and he asks you to cure the plague. Shepard's Renegade response pretty much sums up the approach of all RPGies when first you commonly need to complete a quest before enlisting an NPC to you party: "You know, just ONCE I would've loved it if I asked someone for help and they would say: 'sure, no problem, lets go right now, no strings attached" :D That totally cracked me up and was still in the spirit of the game. Another example came in Citadel DLC for ME3, where you chase a clone of Shepard which, upon capturing the player and his party, bids them farewell by saying "I should go", which in turns prompts a quick conversation where Shepard ponders WHY he used that phrase so many times in a nod to dialogues in RPGies often using the exact same phrase to end a conversation :) Further examples from that series could include Liara in ME2's DLC "Lair of the Shadow Broker", who comments on the fact that their enemies attack in waves rather than just gather together and attack in full force, which would be a much more sucessful tactic or Conrad (the fan that appears throughout the series) in the original ME2 claiming that he took on Shepard's role (when the latter was believed dead) by walking around asking people if they needed help with something... an acknowledgement of somewhat far-fetched system of getting sidequests in RPGies :) A honorable mention could also go to "Max Payne", when titular protagonist, under influence of drugs, is having weird dreams where he literally references being a character in a comic book (which was the style the game's cutscenes were made) and a moment later being a character in a video game with statistics hanging above his head :D
