What about Valen Dreth from the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion? When you first start the game (and I mean LITERALLY when you first start the game, he's the first NPC to actually talk to you after you create your character), he taunts you, making fun of your race and saying that you're going to die there in the prison cell. However, if you later join the Dark Brotherhood, one of the contracts you get is to break into the Imperial Prison and kill him. Sweet, sweet revenge.

In regards to alduin saving you at the beginning of Skyrim, my theory is that alduin sensed that a dragonborne was in helgen, but wasn't sure which humanoid it was, so he just decided to destroy helgen in an attempt to eliminate the one being capable of stopping him

If we count cutscenes, Handsome Jack from Borderlands 2. We don't actually fight him at the beginning, but he lures us into the frozen wastes and tries to blow us up (and then everyone starts calling us "the ones who faced Jack and lived"), and then he calls you up and taunts you for the rest of the game. Even if it wasn't an in-game fight at the beginning, one of the most satisfying moments of my gaming career was burying my hammer in his skull at the end of my first run.

Must admit, I found the finale of skyrim rather anticlimactic. Alduin is basically just a dragon, and I'd literally killed hundreds of those by the time I got around to finishing the main quest. And now the game's given me warriors from Valhalla..erm...Soverngard?... and a dragon shout that makes dragons crash land and become monumentally more vulnerable. Sorry, not an interesting final boss. Good game, bad final boss.

I don't think it was that bad, especially compared to Oblivion. At least you actually got to fight him, while in the previous game you just watched an NPC do the (incredibly slow and poorly choreographed) fighting while you were rooted in place with control restricted to moving the camera only. Couldn't even draw your weapon or use magic to aid in the fight.

You just have to properly find and place crystals. Then most things are just a 5 minute stroll away(with some moderate killing on the way). It ends up being quite similar to Morrowind in terms of travel times, which is fine imo. Anyway, Dragon's Dogma is a great and fairly unique gameplay experience.

I believe that no one can truly kill Alduin, as he is the World-Eater. He is a force of nature. The end of the world was staved off at the end of Skyrim's main quest, but it can never be fully averted.

Never played Durlag's tower! I had the game (10+ discs) around the time it came out, but my parents didn't want to spring for the expansion pack, and thus I've never properly 'completed' my tweenage favorite. Either way, I picked a sorcerer class and ended up being underleveled against an opponent which my main character literally could not damage (spell resistance). But even the mighty Sarevok cannot withstand summoning wand spam followed by 8,000,000 masterwork arrows.

What an epic sight that must have been to behold! :-D Seriously, though, you should check out the Enhanced Edition on Steam or on the dev's website, they might have had a pretty rough start as fans rightly pointed out many flaws compared to the original, but by the time I got around to playing it, the new devs really improved the game a lot and even got around to smoothing out some of the original's rough edges. If nothing else, for the nostalgia and the hands down best piece of level design in any RPG with no movement grid.

Mimmikyu Slight correction, it's not actually the talons that do that. It's the Black Captains. The talons are the five ultra strong orc dudes you fight in a bloody battle before you face off against the final black captain, the Black Hand. I admit, they are the better bossfight, but the talons aren't the final boss. Unfortunately.

Let's not forget about Fable 2. Your character starts the game getting shot out of a window by Lord Lucian, and falling about a thousand feet to what should have been his or her death. At the end of the game however you get the chance to return the favour and shoot HIM in his stupid smug face, and man is it satisfying!

Sebastian LaCroix - Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. Seriously, the dude beheads your Sire, he _almost_ beheads you (until Nines Rodriguez calls him out and stops him), so then he goes the hands-off approach by sending you off to get killed on one rigged mission after another. So surviving all those bad odds and getting him killed at the end feels oh so good...well, unless you completely lose your freakin' mind and _join_ LaCroix, after which you join him in getting obliterated in a horrific bomb blast. PROTIP: Don't forgive LaCroix!

Just because probably no-one is gonna mention this, I'm gonna say BALDUR'S GATE series. Both parts work, but there is something in a way you handle Sarevok - you know, the guy who practically forced you to live on the run, killed your adopted papa and literally aimed to annihilate two kingdoms for the sake of his ego. In the game you virtually ruin his reputation (which was pretty high at the time), demolish his plans, turn people against him, force him to hide underground and THAN kill him... and this is not to mention that you, technically, turn him to your slave in the second game :D
