Great tips Raffi, thanks! One more thing I have discovered, creating art for the purpose of making a living from it is more about your mindset. How you feel, what your purpose is as a person and as an artist. Understanding this is an ongoing process, and I believe doing the internal work as well as making art is the difference between being a thriving artist or a starving artist.

Those are very good tips. I've had to do the same things over time. Being disabled, I just can't afford to get out into other communities as often as I would like. Most of my sales are via the Internet.

Rafi I just wanted to say thank you for all the help that you have been giving me over the last couple weeks of me following your KZbin page you have given me a lot of information and I am going to put myself out there for the first time in my life. Me being an introvert I am kind of scared but excited on the other hand I thank you once again for all the advice and help that you were giving us on this page. I also love to watch the two of you together you are such a sweet couple have a wonderful night and please keep posting videos I think I’ve watched all that you have on here but every once in a while I’ll find one that I have not seen

I'm going through some of your videos that I have not watched yet and this one came up. I live in a very rural southern North Carolina town. Population about 5500. I call myself an abstract artist but here I would need to paint scenes with barns and pigs and cows and crops in the fields to sell anything locally. I am always so humbled when someone local actually buys or even says they like my work or are respectful enough to ask questions. Oh... and all my art would have to be symmetrical, nothing asymmetrical would ever sell here. I walk in to homes of my neighbors and friends and all their pictures are hung at the same height, if they have a table on one side of a chair they have to have another one just like on the other side. If they put two items on one side of a mantle they have to put the exact same thing on the other side. Never would they put two "pictures" beside each other on a wall if they were not of the same thing. But... I stick to my plan and I paint my abstract art and try everyday to enlighten folks around me that there is something different out there... just open your eyes!!! LOL Thanks for all your tips and your time... I don't know how you find time to do all the art you do and all the videos.

I tend to create every subject matter however they are mostly acrylic and textured and you can tell they are mine from the style. I do have themes I naturally revisit though. Any exhibitions and website I’ll group them together. The art of tim Burton book is like this, he drew a lot of subjects but were made into chapters to group them together. So my advice is paint a lot and then see if any can be grouped from natural themes. I will finish my art book someday 😅 so I can group my art into themes within those chapters :)

Thanks for the video. Good stuff. I have finally put down the booze and cigarettes and now I can color between the lines again. Im gonna give it another go and it would be nice if I could do it full time. I like everything you said here. It makes sence. I used to do portraits for money and i hate it. I will not be going thst route unless the feeling hits. It never does for many in a row.

I agree on the style issue thing. I know currently I'm doing tons of realism paintings ONLY for youtube to reach different audiences. Eventually, I will reel back into my true style, but currently I think I need to do a few more things. But yes, you really aren't your own artist if you're doing it only for the market. Hopefully things pick up or I'm back to the corporate grind soon. :(

Just starting out, really, though I have sold a few things to private collectors. I could go for what sells, but really? why do we do art at all? We create what we like, what inspires us. I have done wildlife, portraits, pets, landscapes, flowers, etc. I look at something/someone, and the urge to paint them/it is overwhelming. Those are the pieces that generally sell for me. I can't do it any other way. I guess that makes me a rogue artist. I do what I like!

@@Rafiwashere My daughter's boyfriend took her to Hawaii recently and they took a lot of pictures. (he is a keeper, IMHO) There is one, though, that really got me. She is standing in front of the beach at night, the light is from the moon, and though you can't see her face, she carries her shoes in her hands suggesting a perfect dinner preceded it. the elements are perfectly placed. The picture is romantic and one of those things that inspires me to the extreme. The possibilities of that evening! So I will paint this for her for Christmas and call it "Possibilities". I do hope she likes it!

Thanks for the tips Rafi, it's good to know I'm doing some things right :) The advice I would like to add is to stick to being you, even though many 'experts' will tell you to change. What ideas would you have for a target market for art that has a connection to Nature, mythology, and folklore? (I'm not targeting everyone but I feel I need to tweak the target).

Always interesting to hear other artists perspectives. I think the main thing today is being into the whole social media thing. For myself I have been reluctant to get involved with it until only the last year which really has been a big mistake. I liked the 1990's better as an artist before the net. It was harder, but easier in a lot of ways I feel.

Do you add a frame to original paintings that you sell to customers? Terry
@Rafiwashere Жыл бұрын
no, unless I find something interesting that is meant to go with the art. Framing is really up to the person buying the art.

I have just spent the last few hours binging your videos. You are awesome and I’m so glad I’ve found all this useful information. I started doing art a couple years ago as a hobby. Never previously taking an Art Class. I started in ATX and it was relatively easy to sell online. We relocated to Tampa Bay for my husbands job and I decided to get serious and go full time. We live in a Coastal city and there’s TONS of beachy crap. I just want to paint what I do well. I can do beachscapes, but it’s NOT my passion. Some people think my work is depressing here. My spouse and my parents (who are heavy art critics) are encouraging me to get engaged and do Art shows and First Friday’s. I have a Facebook page with a selection of my pieces posted. I’d love to know what you think. Or any advice you have to give. I work best with acrylic. m.facebook.com/ArtBySarahNewland/
