Great practices, thank you for sharing. We recommend that the first meeting with a challenging stakeholder, to address red flag actions etc., is not done one-on-one. Include the Project Manager or Delivery Lead, and plan ahead.

It isn't the stakeholder who is challenging or difficult. It is the limits of the effectiveness of your engagement with them. If you have a view stakeholders are challenging or difficult, you are establishing a framework for external reasons for failure. Your team will succeed or fail because of the appropriateness of what you do given the environment you're in.

Interesting perspective, Garrie! Thanks for the feedback. But not every difficult situation with a stakeholder is driven by challenging one's views. For example, if a stakeholder is not attending meetings or is missing approval deadlines, these are driven by the individual's workload or time management skills. These are not things we can prevent through our engagement with them. But as business analysts, we need to address issues that pose a risk to the project. We also need to do it in a manner that improves our working relationship with the stakeholder using underlying BA competencies such as listening, conflict management, and negotiation. So that's the focus of this post.
