I remember an evening when my mother took us children to a syrup boil. They had harvested the sugar cane, and that night the great fires beneath the boiling pots glowed in the field under the stars. We ate BBQ and chewed cane, and when it was done, there were jars of syrup to take home. I would be hard pressed to find a syrup boil today, and I haven't been able to find cane syrup in the grocery store. It's all corn syrup now. But I'll never forget how the cane tasted or how that syrup smelled on a chilly night in autumn.

@jeevanraj41683 жыл бұрын
A small tip to you. Just use 2 inches of sugarcane in seedling tray and get a seedling. Plant in soil and wait for it to grow about 1.5 feet. Then cut the seedling 6 -8 inches above the ground. This will allow side shoots to grow. You will get atleast 6 sugarcane from one seedling instead of just one. When one bush grows above 3 feet, tie them together with its leaves. It helps them to stay straight. You can experiment this on just couple of seedling. Hope you would try this one. By the way, scrape the skin with a sickle before making juice.

My eyes bleed when sugar cane is planted straight up instead of laid down horizontally, it gives a more sturdy base and stronger roots and bigger shoots from the ground instead of aerial shoots. Its like a type of grass so very easy to grow. Put it in water to root or just put it straight in the grown. I usually use the top ends, they have plenty of eyes and is not wasted. Juicing without peeling is about the same yield it's just a little easier to rotate the wheel.

You can grow a hardier alternative to sugarcane called 'Miscane.' It's a crossbreed between sugarcane and the grass known as Miscanthus. I bought 10 seeds 'labelled' as sugarcane earlier this year. Despite warnings that cane will not grow if the temperature falls below 14 degrees Celsius (57 Fahrenheit), my plants have continued to grow from its first year's sowing. Indeed, one of them is over 6ft and has a flower. 3 months from seed to flower, and I keep them in pots. So, I'm thinking I have a 'Miscane' here. Oh, and I live in Scotland. Yes, 'that' Scotland. The colder, wetter, blustery one across the Atlantic. I plan to cut my canes down before the first frost and store the rootstocks indoors throughout the winter. Should have enough windowsills. So if you're still in Illinois and have enough room to keep a few plants indoors away from the cold, I would invest in a few seeds (you do not need many. I had 100% germination from 10 seeds).

I heard that sugarcane juice doesn't stay fresh long. How did the Indian farmers "condense" the juice in the fields without boiling to reduce? Did they just let it evaporate? Also, relative to its shelf life, is it a candidate for freezing fresh for long-term storage? Or is that a bad idea? I'm in the wrong zone to grow it, but I'm counting on slow growth to keep them rooting indoors over the winter, so have a few purple stalks rooting over the winter since I'm gonna do it *anyway* 😝because I'm botanically rebellious and I always welcome the lessons that Goddess has to share with Me through Nature. Hopefully, it'll be a success -- but I'M HERE FOR THE EXPERIENCE, either way. I can't afford the juicer RN, but I'm hoping to have My act together by the time I get some rooted and growing for harvest. I grew up in the south, so it'll be awesomely nostalgic for Me to enjoy My Own fresh cane stalks too!! I picked purple because it's My fave color ANYway AND I NEVER KNEW THERE WAS SUCH A COLOR!! And THANK YOU for letting Us know that the stalks CAN DROWN. I think they'll be okay, but I've had Mine *FULLY* SUBMERGED FOR DAYS! 🤞🏽😬

If you keep adding organic fertilizer to the soil you don't have to worry about crop rotation and it's really easy to make organic fertilizer just Harvest weeds and add sugar and yeast and ferment them and then you have a nice shelf-stable organic fertilizer
