I've been using a Bow featherboard for about a year now. Love it. I chose the one with the 'fingers' on both sides and use my giant Magswitches to hold it to the saw table. Never have I had a problem and I keep it magnetically attached to the front of my saw when not in use. Very handy and wonderful to use.

Spent the day hooking up my new, used heavily once, Makita GA9071X1 230mm 9" grinder to Henry and VTuff vacuum extractors via ash can to eliminate hot metal spark risk. Clumsy but it works. Next thing to save up for is heavier duty M-class extractor or even higher for brick and concrete dust. Been clearing all sorts of cement, concrete, and other rubble from daughter's new back garden (yard in US speak). While it would have popped up due to subscription, it was well timed

Fun fact the 3m xtract dust extractors are re badged starmix ipulse dust extractors. In Europe alot of tradesmen consider starmix the best on the market and in comparison to the festool dust extractors it out performs them because of the dual filter design.

One of the possibly unintentional benefits of the bow featherboard is the curved spine. It makes your beer belly turn into a third hand by using it to set the desired depth while you tighten the knobs on the router table. I like to put my board in place and use my belly to push the featherboard in place so I can get the desired pressure and make it even as I tighten the knobs.

I used this device for the first time this eve... I made a very nice discovery.... I was making miter slot runners and needed to cut approx 1/4" off of a 7/8 piece of wood. I decided to use the featherboard and as the cut finished, the waste piece was very gently pushed backward towards me (yes I was using a riving knife) .... the featherboard stopped the movement of the waste wood causing it to gently slide to the left side of the blade on the table. Granted this was not a true "kickback" but it made me realize what a great tool this is! Hopefully I've explained this clearly enough that it makes sense to you.

every +3 decibels equates to doubling the perceived loudness. Going the other direction, -3 decibels is perceived as half the loudness. When looking at from and amplifier point of view, every +3 dB equates to 10 times more power required to create the sound. For example, if you measure 60 dB at 1 watt with the sensor 1 meter away from the speaker/source. To get 63 dB requires 10 watts, 66 dB requires 100watts and 69dB requires 1000 watts. Going the opposite direction to reduce requires 1/10 the power.

I've been using zebra pens for years too. They are fantastic. My dad has been using them since the 90s for work. He and I and civil engineers, and they're great for writing super small text reliably. I also love their mechanical pencils cause they're fine lead but still hard to break. Those pencils would be difficult with woodworking though, like you said.
@MMWoodworking2 жыл бұрын
The iGaging one is quite interesting, because they basically took the Incra idea, simplified it in some ways (no holes for 1/64ths), yet also added new functionality with the angle option. They are also much thicker than the Incra ones, which are rather thin and flimsy. I have been using my Incra 6in for a few years now, and it is an absolute essential for me on every project. I will have to consider picking up these ones to compare, and just to add to my collection. I really like the angle ability.

That very Zebra pen was omnipresent in my flight suit sleeve pocket when I was active duty. Freakin’ loved that pen, particularly because it didn’t need to be right-side-up to write. I think the ink barrel is pressurized, so it’ll write at any angle, if memory serves.

I’m as acoustics professional, 5 dB isn’t 3 times as loud/as quiet. In terms of loudness a difference of 10 dB is twice/half as loud and 20 dB would be 4x as loud. 5 dB is clearly louder and the difference between someone talking conversationally and someone speaking at a raised voice/ approaching yelling territory. Yes acoustics is weird, but one interesting thing is that it often provides amazing insights on airflow efficiencies and longevity, as it’s the turbulence flow, that will commonly create the noise. Awesome review, I will definitely be keeping 3M in mind when I’m ready to upgrade, thank you! A quiet shop is a safer shop people, and always wear your hearing protection!!

We had a lot of problems with that exact pocket boring machine at work. It would start to fail to drill the hole for the screw (would still bore the “countersink” portion). That one was sold and a new castle was purchased which uses regular motors as opposed to rotors (old castle would require router replacement 1-2 times a year), this one also (only a month or so old has started to have the exact same issue. When they work they’re awesome, when they start to experience issues they are a huge pain.

I like the Zebra F-301 but broke more than one, carrying in shirt pocket and leaning against concrete or steel during routine inspections. By the time I retired as a Hydroelectric Operator, I was using the F-701. Now that I’m out of the plant and don’t use a pen constantly, I carry a cheap “tactical” pen that requires a couple of twists to expose the tip, and will accept quality refills. But the F-301 fine point is nice for writing.👍

Point worth noting perhaps on the pen/pencil thing - I don't use either of those, but the ones I do use are basically the same body - which has meant on occasion I've marked up bits of wood with the pen or written in my logbook with the pencil - have two different shapes for the two functions is *definitely* a good idea.

Love the content James. Do you have any advice on knowing when to swap out bits of sandpaper? Sometimes I feel like I'm wasting money throwing aside perfectly good sheets but then sometimes I feel like I'm getting nowhere even though the paper still feels abrasive. I especially have this issue when using it to sharpen tools or flatten a plane sole, it feels like metal just instantly destroys the paper.
@StumpyNubs2 жыл бұрын
If you feel like it's not cutting fast enough and you are inclined to use more pressure, it's time to switch. If you really consider how little a few sanding discs really cost in comparison to the price of the wood in the project, let alone your time, it's not hard to use an extra disc rather than overusing an old one.
